A simple and reliable methodology for the detection of paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs) in bivalve tissues using potentiometric chemical sensors was developed. Five methods of PST extraction from mussel and oyster tissues were evaluated, including the AOAC-recommended method, which served as the reference. The main objective was to minimize the matrix effect of the extracts on the sensors' responses and ensure efficient toxin recovery.

Microplastics (MPLs) are contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) ubiquitous in aquatic environments, which can be bioaccumulated along the food chain. In this study, the accumulation of polyethylene (PE), polystyrene (PS) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) microplastics (MPLs) of sizes below 63 μm was assessed in Mediterranean mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis spp). In this study, different extraction methods and conditions were used for the extraction of antioxidants from brown macroalgae . The extraction methodologies used were ultrasound-assisted extraction (ultrasonic bath and ultrasonic probe), extraction with a vortex, extraction with an Ultra-Turrax homogenizer, and high-pressure-assisted extraction. Chub mackerel (Scomber colias) is an underutilised fish abundant in the North Atlantic and a nutritious food with high docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), selenium (Se), and vitamin B12 contents, affected by seasonality. Hence, the bioaccessibility of fatty acid (FA), Se, and vitamin B12 in chub mackerel was studied. Daily consumptions of 51 g, 35 g, and 14 g of March, June, and October chub mackerel, respectively, would ensure EPA + DHA requirements.
