Comparative analysis of the microbiome composition of artisanal cheeses produced in the Mediterranean area.

In the PRIMA project ArtiSaneFood, the microbiological parameters of several artisanal cheeses produced in the Mediterranean area have been quantified. In this pilot study, we selected four of these artisanal cheese products from Italy, Portugal, Spain, and Morocco to investigate and compare their microbiomes in terms of taxonomic composition, presence of reads of foodborne pathogens, as well as virulence and antimicrobial resistance genes. , and were the most represented genera in the Portuguese and Spanish cheeses, in the Italian cheese, and , , , and in the Moroccan products.

Biopreservation strategies using bacteriocins to control meat spoilage and foodborne outbreaks.

Fresh meat is highly perishable, presenting challenges in spoilage mitigation and waste reduction globally. Despite the efforts, foodborne outbreaks from meat consumption persist. Biopreservation offers a natural solution to extend shelf life by managing microbial communities.

Genomics-based timely detection of dengue virus type I genotypes I and V in Uruguay.

This study details a genomics-based approach for the early detection of mosquito-borne pathogens, marked by Uruguay's first ever complete genomic sequencing of Dengue Virus type I genotypes I and V. This pioneering effort has facilitated the prompt identification of these genotypes within the country, enabling Uruguayan public health authorities to develop timely and effective response strategies. Further integrated into this approach is a climate-driven suitability measure, closely associated with Dengue case reports and indicative of the local climate's role in the virus's transmission in the country within the changing climate context.

Microsurgical vasectomy reversal: experience of a single center.

Background: Vasectomy reversal (VR) is the only technique that allows men previously submitted to a vasectomy to conceive by natural pregnancy. We report our experience with microsurgical VR and identify predictive factors of natural pregnancy.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed all patients submitted to VR by a single surgeon from 2008 to 2021 at our single center.

Human asthenozoospermia: Update on genetic causes, patient management, and clinical strategies.

Background: In mammals, sperm fertilization potential relies on efficient progression within the female genital tract to reach and fertilize the oocyte. This fundamental property is supported by the flagellum, an evolutionarily conserved organelle, which contains dynein motor proteins that provide the mechanical force for sperm propulsion and motility. Primary motility of the sperm cells is acquired during their transit through the epididymis and hyperactivated motility is acquired throughout the journey in the female genital tract by a process called capacitation.

Treatment patterns and outcomes in secondary acute myeloid leukemia arising after hypomethylating agents: PETHEMA registry study.

Background: Patients with secondary acute myeloid leukemia who previously received hypomethylating agents for prior myeloid neoplasms (HMA-sAML) face a dismal prognosis.

Methods: The authors analyze the characteristics, therapeutic approaches, and outcomes of patients with HMA-sAML from the Programa Español para el Tratamiento de Hemopatías Malignas (PETHEMA) registry.

Results: A total of 479 patients were included, mostly from prior myelodysplastic syndrome (84%).

Right ventricular myocardial work: proof-of-concept for the assessment of pressure-strain loops of patients with pre-capillary pulmonary hypertension.

Background: Right ventricular myocardial work (RVMW) assessed by transthoracic echocardiography allows to study the right ventricular (RV) function using RV pressure-strain loops. The assessment of these novel indexes of RVMW has not yet been exten sively studied, namely in pre-capillary pulmonary hypertension (PH) population.

Objectives: to evaluate the relationship between RVMW and invasive indices of right heart catheterization (RHC) in a cohort of patients with group I and group IV PH and to compare with a control group without PH.

Preliminary efficacy and safety results of a new macular buckle model (NPB) in myopic traction maculopathy.

Purpose: To describe the efficacy and safety outcomes of NPB macular buckle (MB) in myopic traction maculopathy (MTM).

Methods: A monocentric, prospective cohort study of the naïve eyes who underwent MB surgery, alone or combined with vitrectomy (PPV) for MTM, using the new NPB buckle, between December 2022 and June 2024. The anatomical results, postoperative complications, and MB ease of use were analyzed as the main outcomes.

This study aimed to investigate the moderating effect of frailty on the relationship between cognition and symptoms of depression in individuals aged ≥65 and to explore differences between four European regions (West, North, South, and East). A cross-sectional analysis was conducted with 29,094 participants (16,365 women) from 27 countries, aged ≥65 years, who responded to wave 8 of the SHARE project. The variables analysed were depression (12-item EURO-D scale), frailty, and a general cognition index (CogId).

Equine endometrosis is a major cause of infertility in mares and is characterized by degenerative, functional and fibrotic changes in the endometrium with increased collagen (COL) deposition. Transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1 is one of the major pro-fibrotic factors involved in the excessive deposition of extracellular matrix (ECM) components in the equine endometrium. It has been demonstrated that ovarian steroids, specifically 17β-estradiol (E2) and progesterone (P4), not only regulate the cyclicity of the estrous cycle, but also have been implicated as anti- or pro-fibrotic factors.

Association between lifestyle risk factors and mortality in the Mexico City prospective study.

Unhealthy lifestyles risk factors, such as smoking, alcohol consumption, physical inactivity, poor diet, and obesity, have been associated with a higher risk of all-cause and cause-specific mortality. However, composite score of these unhealthy behaviours has not been considered, particularly in Latin American populations. Herein, we examined the association of lifestyle risk factors score with all-cause and cause-specific mortality in Mexican adults.

Dynamic representation of appetitive and aversive stimuli in nucleus accumbens shell D1- and D2-medium spiny neurons.

The nucleus accumbens (NAc) is a key brain region for motivated behaviors, yet how distinct neuronal populations encode appetitive or aversive stimuli remains undetermined. Using microendoscopic calcium imaging in mice, we tracked NAc shell D1- or D2-medium spiny neurons' (MSNs) activity during exposure to stimuli of opposing valence and associative learning. Despite drift in individual neurons' coding, both D1- and D2-population activity was sufficient to discriminate opposing valence unconditioned stimuli, but not predictive cues.

Wall teichoic acids (WTAs) from the major Gram-positive foodborne pathogen Listeria monocytogenes are peptidoglycan-associated glycopolymers decorated by monosaccharides that, while not essential for bacterial growth, are required for bacterial virulence and resistance to antimicrobials. Here we report the structure and function of a bacterial WTAs rhamnosyltransferase, RmlT, strictly required for L. monocytogenes WTAs rhamnosylation.

Introduction And Objectives: International guidelines for the diagnosis of Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis (HP) have improved the diagnostic standardization of this heterogeneous interstitial lung disease. Our goal was to determine how the final multidisciplinary discussion confidence level for suspected fibrotic HP (fHP) can be impacted by the application of different guidelines validated in this context.

Materials And Methods: Retrospective study including patients submitted to transbronchial lung cryobiopsy (TBLC) with a final multidisciplinary meeting diagnosis of fHP.

[Medication Reconciliation in Primary Care: Practices, Knowledge and Attitudes in the Lisbon and Tagus Valley Health Region].

Introduction: Despite the importance of medication reconciliation for the continuity of care, there is currently no information on the practices, knowledge, and attitudes of Portuguese family doctors on this subject. This study aimed to characterize the formal medication reconciliation procedures in the Lisbon and Tagus Valley Health Region, as well as the perception of family doctors in this region about what they know, how they think and how they practice medication reconciliation.

Methods: We conducted an observational, cross-sectional and descriptive study, using two observation units: primary health care units (study 1) and family doctors (study 2) in the Lisbon and Tagus Valley Health Region.
