Background And Purpose: Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a neurological condition that affects motor and sensory functions below the injury site. The consequences of SCI are devastating for the patients, and although significant efforts have been done in the last years, there is no effective therapy. Baclofen has emerged in the last few years as an interesting drug in the SCI field.

HBM4EU E-waste study - An untargeted metabolomics approach to characterize metabolic changes during E-waste recycling.

E-waste contains hazardous chemicals that may be a direct health risk for workers involved in recycling. We conducted an untargeted metabolomics analysis of urine samples collected from male e-waste processing workers to explore metabolic changes associated with chemical exposures in e-waste recycling in Belgium, Finland, Latvia, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland, and Portugal. Questionnaire data and urine samples were obtained from workers involved in the processing of e-waste (sorting, dismantling, shredding, pre-processing, metal, and non-metal processing), as well as from controls with no known occupational exposure.

Gabapentin (GBP), a pharmaceutical widely used for seizures and neuropathic pain, has emerged as a contaminant in global aquatic environments, raising concerns about its ecological impact. This study investigated the effects of environmentally relevant concentrations of GBP (0, 1, 10, 1000 μg/L) on visual development in zebrafish (Danio rerio). Behavioral assays showed that GBP exposure enhanced light sensitivity, as indicated by a significant increase in total travel distance (TTD) in all exposure groups compared to controls.

Photoinactivation of sulfate-reducing bacteria using 1,9-dimethyl-methylene blue - DMMB and laser light.

Annually, the oil and gas industry faces equipment losses and product quality degradation due to the presence of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB). Given the negative impact of SRB, this study evaluates the use of photoinactivation (PI) with zinc chloride double salt of 1,9-Dimethyl-Methylene Blue (DMMB) as a photosensitizer (PS) in varying concentrations and combined with Laser light at different exposures in an SRB consortium. For culture growth, a modified Postgate C medium (without ferrous sulfate) was used, and cell quantification was performed on 100 μL aliquots of the consortium, read on a spectrophotometer (λ600 nm) in an oxygen- and light-free environment at room temperature.

Impact of Scanner Manufacturer, Endorectal Coil Use, and Clinical Variables on Deep Learning-assisted Prostate Cancer Classification Using Multiparametric MRI.

Purpose To assess the impact of scanner manufacturer and scan protocol on the performance of deep learning models to classify prostate cancer (PCa) aggressiveness on biparametric MRI (bpMRI). Materials and Methods In this retrospective study, 5,478 cases from ProstateNet, a PCa bpMRI dataset with examinations from 13 centers, were used to develop five deep learning (DL) models to predict PCa aggressiveness with minimal lesion information and test how using data from different subgroups-scanner manufacturers and endorectal coil (ERC) use (Siemens, Philips, GE with and without ERC and the full dataset)-impacts model performance. Performance was assessed using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC).

Pre-validation of a novel reconstructed skin equivalent model for skin irritation and nanoparticle risk assessment.

In alignment with the global movement toward reducing animal testing, several reconstructed human epidermis (RHE) models have been created for conducting skin irritation tests. These models have undergone development, verification, validation, and integration into OECD TG 439. Our team has introduced a novel in-house RHE named GB-RHE, and we adhere to OECD TG 439 to pre-validate the model and test its potential employment for nanoparticle irritation studies.
