Electronic address:

Cadmium (Cd) is a widely distributed typical environmental pollutant and one of the most toxic heavy metals. It is well-known that environmental Cd causes testicular damage by inducing classic types of cell death such as cell apoptosis and necrosis. However, as a new type of cell death, the role and mechanism of pyroptosis in Cd-induced testicular injury remain unclear.

Electronic address:

Cadmium (Cd), a well-established developmental toxicant, accumulates in the placentae and disrupts its structure and function. Population study found adverse pregnancy outcomes caused by environmental Cd exposure associated with cell senescence. However, the role of autophagy activation in Cd-induced placental cell senescence and its reciprocal mechanisms are unknown.

Article Synopsis
  • PFAS, a group of environmental contaminants known for their immunosuppressive effects, may have a connection to rheumatoid arthritis (RA), but this link has been under-researched.
  • Using data from nearly 10,500 adults over multiple years, the study analyzed serum levels of different PFAS and self-reported RA cases to understand their association.
  • Results showed that higher concentrations of certain PFAS were linked to lower odds of RA, primarily in females, suggesting that exposure to these substances may influence the prevalence of RA in a sex-specific manner.

Electronic address:

Low testosterone (T) levels are associated with many common diseases, such as obesity, male infertility, depression, and cardiovascular disease. It is well known that environmental cadmium (Cd) exposure can induce T decline, but the exact mechanism remains unclear. We established a murine model in which Cd exposure induced testicular T decline.

Prenatal exposure to perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) is inevitable among pregnant women. Nevertheless, there is a scarcity of research investigating the connections between prenatal PFAS exposure and the placental structure and efficiency. Based on 712 maternal-fetal dyads in the Ma'anshan Birth Cohort, we analyzed associations between individual and mixed PFAS exposure and placental measures.

Atlas and source of the microplastics of male reproductive system in human and mice.

Environ Sci Pollut Res Int

April 2024

Reproductive Medicine Center, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Shanghai General Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, Shanghai, 200080, China.

Regarding the impact of microplastics (MPs) on the male reproductive system, previous studies have identified a variety of MPs in both human semen and testicular samples. These studies have put forward the hypothesis that small particles can enter the semen through the epididymis and seminal vesicles. Here, we performed qualitative and quantitative analyses of MPs in human testis, semen, and epididymis samples, as well as in testis, epididymis, seminal vesicle, and prostate samples from mice via pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS).

Purpose: To identify the genetic cause of a cryptorchidism patient carrying a non-canonical splicing variant highlighted by SPCards platform in RXFP2 and to provide a comprehensive overview of RXFP2 variants with cryptorchidism correlation.

Methods: We identified a homozygous non-canonical splicing variant by whole-exome sequencing and Sanger sequencing in a case with cryptorchidism and non-obstructive azoospermia (NOA). As the pathogenicity of this non-canonical splicing variant remained unclear, we initially utilized the SPCards platform to predict its pathogenicity.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the genetic causes of male infertility in three Han Chinese men with severe asthenoteratozoospermia, focusing on mutations in the ADGB gene.
  • Whole-exome sequencing revealed rare bi-allelic deleterious variants in these patients, which were linked to significant sperm cell abnormalities, including defects in the acrosome and flagella.
  • Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) was found to be an effective treatment method for these patients, highlighting its potential superiority over traditional in vitro fertilization (IVF) methods for those with ADGB-related infertility issues.

Depressive symptoms is a public health concern worldwide, and adolescents may experience more depressive symptoms. Although the relationship between borderline personality features (BPFs) disorder and depressive symptoms has been established, it is unclear whether the longitudinal relationship between them is unidirectional or bidirectional and whether these symptoms are different between boys and girls. In this study, Chinese adolescents (1608 total and separately 972 for boys and 636 girls) were enrolled between September 2019 and September 2021, and we analyzed the data using a cross-lagged model.

There is strong evidence that obesity is a risk factor for poor semen quality. However, the effects of multigenerational paternal obesity on the susceptibility to cadmium (a reproductive toxicant)-induced spermatogenesis disorders in offspring remain unknown. Here, we show that, in mice, spermatogenesis and retinoic acid levels become progressively lower as the number of generations exposed to a high-fat diet increase.
