Beyond the typical respiratory symptoms and fever associated with severe acute respiratory syndrome, we may still have much to learn about other manifestations of the novel SARS-CoV-2 infection. A patient presented with Guillain-Barré syndrome in China with a concurrent SARS-CoV-2 infection. The following case report looks at a patient presenting with the rare Miller Fisher syndrome, a variant of Guillain-Barré while also testing positive for COVID-19.

Purpose: To investigate whether serum albumin (SA) concentration can predict the need for surgical intervention in neonates with necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC).
Methods: Retrospective review of all cases with NEC Bell's stage 2 and 3 that were treated in a single center between 2009 and 2015. Data on patient demographics, clinical parameters, laboratory findings and surgical status were recorded.

Background: Scaphoid fractures account for 90% of carpal fractures and occur predominantly in young men. The use of immediate surgical fixation to manage this type of fracture has increased, despite insufficient evidence of improved outcomes over non-surgical management. The SWIFFT trial compared the clinical effectiveness of surgical fixation with cast immobilisation and early fixation of fractures that fail to unite in adults with scaphoid waist fractures displaced by 2 mm or less.

The identification of disease alleles underlying human autoinflammatory diseases can provide important insights into the mechanisms that maintain neutrophil homeostasis. Here, we focused our attention on generalized pustular psoriasis (GPP), a potentially life-threatening disorder presenting with cutaneous and systemic neutrophilia. Following the whole-exome sequencing of 19 unrelated affected individuals, we identified a subject harboring a homozygous splice-site mutation (c.

Backgroud: Diastolic dysfunction (DD) is reported to affect up to 35% of the adult general population. The consequence of progressive DD is heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). Coronary microvascular dysfunction (CMD) has been suggested as one of the pathologic mechanisms leading to HFpEF.

Management of a difficult airway caused by pathology below the glottis is high-risk and requires a shared approach to airway planning and surgical treatment. Access to the trachea requires a careful assessment of the airway since the end-point of laryngoscopy for infraglottic airway management is not visualization of the larynx for tube placement, but access to the laryngotracheal complex in cases where intubation may not be feasible or may preclude surgical access. This work provides a common framework for creating multidisciplinary shared-airway management plans and presents devices and strategies that have in recent years improved airway management safety in this difficult patient group and may prove useful in the setting of the novel Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19).

Introduction: The novel Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, may need intensive care unit (ICU) admission in up to 12% of all positive cases for massive interstitial pneumonia, with possible long-term endotracheal intubation for mechanical ventilation and subsequent tracheostomy. The most common airway-related complications of such ICU maneuvers are laryngotracheal granulomas, webs, stenosis, malacia and, less commonly, tracheal necrosis with tracheo-esophageal or tracheo-arterial fistulae.
Materials And Methods: This paper gathers the opinions of experts of the Laryngotracheal Stenosis Committee of the European Laryngological Society, with the aim of alerting the medical community about the possible rise in number of COVID-19-related laryngotracheal stenosis (LTS), and the aspiration of paving the way to a more rationale concentration of these cases within referral specialist airway centers.

The use of lasers to treat gynaecological and urogynaecological conditions including genitourinary syndrome of the menopause, stress urinary incontinence, vaginal prolapse and other conditions, has become increasingly popular over recent years. Following widespread concerns over the use of mesh for treating stress urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse and potential adverse outcomes from the use of mesh, there has been heightened awareness and debate over the introduction and adoption of new technologies and interventions within the speciality. On July 30th 2018 the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning against the use of energy based devices (EBDS) including laser to perform "vaginal rejuvenation" or vaginal cosmetic procedures.

Triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) encompasses molecularly different subgroups, with a subgroup harboring evidence of defective homologous recombination (HR) DNA repair. Here, within a phase 2 window clinical trial, RIO trial (EudraCT 2014-003319-12), we investigate the activity of PARP inhibitors in 43 patients with untreated TNBC. The primary end point, decreased Ki67, occured in 12% of TNBC.

Internal derangement of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is usually treated conservatively, but about 5% require surgical treatment. We designed a retrospective study to assess the long-term outcomes of eminectomy combined with discectomy and silastic interpositional graft in 44 patients who had chronic TMJ dysfunction that had not responded to traditional conservative treatment and arthrocentesis. The maximum mouth opening, pain score, Wilkes stage, and clinical dysfunction index were measured before, and two years after, operation.

Objective: To refine and validate a model for predicting the risk of gastrointestinal (GI) cancer in iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) and to develop an app to facilitate use in clinical practice.
Design: Three elements: (1) analysis of a dataset of 2390 cases of IDA to validate the predictive value of age, sex, blood haemoglobin concentration (Hb), mean cell volume (MCV) and iron studies on the probability of underlying GI cancer; (2) a pilot study of the benefit of adding faecal immunochemical testing (FIT) into the model; and (3) development of an app based on the model.
Results: Age, sex and Hb were all strong, independent predictors of the risk of GI cancer, with ORs (95% CI) of 1.
Malignancies of the auricular skin tend to metastasise to preauricular, parotid, facial, and level II (possibly to levels IV and V) lymph nodes in an unpredictable manner. Over the years, we have observed that this pattern of metastasis is commonly linked to lesions that involve the lower half of the ear. To find conclusive evidence based on this hypothetical observation, we retrospectively studied 108 patients who presented with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the ear, and looked at the exact auricular site of the lesion at presentation, incidence of metastasis, nodal involvement, treatment, and survival outcome.

Introduction: Revision hip surgery is well documented to have a high association with substantial blood loss and the associated need for a blood transfusion. This exposes the patient to increased risk of transfusion reaction and blood borne infection. There are many strategies to minimize allogeneic transfusion rates in revision surgery such as pre-operative autologous donation, peri-operative tranexamic acid, thrombin sealants, normovolaemic haemodilution, intra-operative blood salvage and the use of post-operative autologous drains.

There is evidence that intermittent hypoxic exposure (IHE) may improve high altitude (HA) performance. In this study, the effects of short-term IHE through voluntary apnea training on HA-related symptoms, including acute mountain sickness (AMS), were examined for the first time. Forty healthy adults were randomized to a self-administered apnea training ( = 19) or control ( = 21 no apnea training) group before ascent to an altitude of 5100 m in the Himalayas over 14 days.

Background: The European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Quality of Life Questionnaire-Lung Cancer 13 (QLQ-LC13) assesses quality of life (QOL) in patients with lung cancer and was the first EORTC module developed for use in international clinical trials. Since its publication in 1994, major treatment advances with possible effects on QOL have occurred. These changes called for an update of the module and its international psychometric validation.

Contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (US) has become an important supplementary tool in many clinical applications in children. Contrast-enhanced voiding urosonography and intravenous US contrast agents have proved useful in routine clinical practice. Other applications of intracavitary contrast-enhanced US, particularly in children, have not been widely investigated but could serve as a practical and radiation-free problem-solver in several clinical settings.
