Endemic in Brazil, visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a zoonotic infection that is among the most important parasitic diseases transmitted by vectors. Dogs are the main reservoirs of canine leishmaniasis (CanL) and their identification is used in some countries as part of disease prevention and control measures in the canine and human population. In this context, serological tests are necessary, composed of antigens capable of correctly identifying infected dogs, minimizing the number of false-negative cases.

Background: The filling of the root canal system (RCS) is an important step in endodontic treatment and aims to obtain a three-dimensional sealing of the root canal spaces to prevent bacterial contamination. For this, the selection of an appropriate sealer must be performed synchronously with the choice of the root canal filling technique. This study aims, through an integrative review, to evaluate the quality of root canal filling by comparing thermoplastic and single-cone (SC) techniques.

The inflammatory follicular cysts are cystic lesions associated with non-erupted permanent teeth and involve devitalized deciduous teeth. Products resulting from the necrotic pulp of deciduous teeth stimulate crown hood growth of successor permanent tooth radiographically shown as a unilocular, radiolucent area, associated with an impacted permanent crown. Treatment based on cyst decompression and maintenance of the deciduous tooth is a conservative approach to space maintenance.

Prosthetic dentistry involves functional and esthetic restoration. Some situations require the use of fiber-reinforced composite resin posts that help preserve restorations. However, if the initial treatment fails, a new endodontic intervention may be required for fiber-reinforced composite resin post removal.

Root fractures resulting from dental trauma involve dentin, cementum and pulp. The present study aimed to demonstrate the importance of cone-beam computed tomography (CBTC) and bioceramics in the correct planning and intervention of a horizontal root fracture case in tooth 11 with late treatment in an 18-year-old patient. Clinical and radiographic examinations revealed tooth displacement, pain on vertical percussion and images suggestive of a horizontal root fracture.

This case report describes the use of the guided endodontics for a non-surgical endodontic retreatment of the mandibular molar. A 38-year-old female reported apical swelling and localized pain on the tooth #30, exacerbated when chewing hard food. Periapical radiographic examination showed pulp canal obliteration in the apical third associated with extensive radiolucent area.

Different restorative techniques have been proposed for the treatment of posterior teeth affected by cracked tooth syndrome (CTS). However, the literature is scarce in protocols of how to solve CTS using ceramic restorations made by computer aided design-computer aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) system. CAD-CAM provides a fast and efficient restorative treatment usually in a single visit, reducing the risk of contamination and micro-infiltration of the cracked line.

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dislocation, or luxation, occurs when the condyle crosses the articular eminence in such a way that it does not return to its correct anatomical position, unless aided by a reduction in external forces for TMJ. The diagnosis of condylar luxation is clinical; however, image exams are important in classifying the types of condylar luxation and associated fractures. Displacement of the TMJ can occur due to either an exaggerated mouth opening or a forced opening and occasionally is associated with a high-impact trauma to the jaw, the latter being an extremely rare condition.

This article describes four cases with safe and feasible clinical treatment strategies for anterior teeth with pulp canal obliteration (PCO) using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), digital radiography (DR), dental operating microscopy (DOM) and ultrasonic tips (US). Four anterior teeth with PCO were chosen. DR was taken with different angulations and analyzed with different filters.

Some complications can arise with the usage of local anesthesia for dental procedures, including the fracture of needles in the patient. This is a rare incident, usually caused by the patient's sudden movements during anesthetic block. Its complications are not common, but can include pain, trismus, inflammation in the region, difficulty in swallowing, and migration of the object, which is the least common but has the ability to cause more serious damage to the patient.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to verify the effect of alternating 2.5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) on the smear layer removal from root canal surfaces.
Methods And Materials: A total of 15 single-rooted human teeth, instrumented with ProTaper files, were randomly distributed in 3 groups.

Objectives: To describe the use of open-source software for the post-processing of CBCT imaging for the assessment of periapical lesions development after endodontic treatment.
Methods: CBCT scans were retrieved from endodontic records of two patients. Three-dimensional virtual models, voxel counting, volumetric measurement (mm) and mean intensity of the periapical lesion were performed with ITK-SNAP v.

Cyst-like periapical lesions should be treated initially with conservative nonsurgical procedures. In this case series, we describe the clinical and radiographic outcomes of large cyst-like lesions that were treated by orthograde decompression and long-term intracanal use of calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)2] mixed with 2% chlorhexidine digluconate. Ten cases of cyst-like periapical lesions involving 15 teeth from 10 patients were selected.

Apexification is a method of inducing apical closure for non-vital immature permanent teeth. During this treatment a mineralized barrier is induced [with long term calcium hydroxide (CH) treatment]; or artificially created [with mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) plug]. This article describes two cases of apexification in immature necrotic teeth treated with these two different techniques.

Objectives: To correlate the radiomorphometric indices obtained using digital panoramic radiography (DPR) with bone mineral densities, evaluated by the dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry test, in a population of post-menopausal females to identify patients with asymptomatic low bone mineral densities.
Methods: The morphology of the mandibular cortex was evaluated using the mandibular cortical index (MCI) and the inferior mandibular cortex width was evaluated using the mental index (MI) in 64 female patients who had undergone dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry assessment. Of these patients, 21 were diagnosed with osteopaenia and 20 with osteoporosis, and 23 were normal.

Objectives: This study was an ex vivo evaluation of the marginal adaptation of mineral trioxide aggregate as an apical barrier using teeth with an open apex and scanning electron microscopy.
Materials And Methods: Eighteen single-rooted human teeth were used. An artificial open apex was created using Gates Glidden drills #6-1 in a crown-down manner until the #1 bur passed through the foramen.

Endodontic treatment of teeth with perforating internal root resorption represents a clinical challenge. In most cases, extraction of the tooth and subsequent replacement with an osseointegrated implant is indicated. Presented herein is a case report of a maxillary lateral incisor with advanced perforating internal root resorption in the middle third of the root and the presence of a sinus tract.

Introduction: The objective of the present in vitro study was to compare 4 diagnostic methods to identify accessory mesial canals (AMCs) in lower first molars.
Methods: Forty-four lower first molars were selected for assessment with cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), digital radiography (DR), clinical inspection (CI), and dental operating microscope (DOM). Initially, axial images were obtained by using CBCT, and radiographs were taken in ortho, mesial, and distal angulations.
