The post-genomic era has raised a growing demand for efficient procedures to identify protein functions, which can be accomplished by applying machine learning to the characteristics set extracted from the protein. This approach is feature-based and has been the focus of several works in bioinformatics. In this work, we investigated the characteristics of proteins, representing the primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary structures of the protein, that improve the model's quality by applying dimensionality reduction techniques and using the Support Vector Machine classifier for predicting the enzymes' classes.

The McCune Albright syndrome (MAS) is a rare, multi-system disease composed of the triad of polyostotic fibrous dysplasia of bone (PFDB), café-au-lait skin hyperpigmentation, and endocrine disorders. The diagnosis involves clinical, biochemical and imaging findings, with dentistry playing an important role in MAS, since many patients present DFPO in the craniofacial bones, including the maxilla and mandible, and in view of their dental needs, the correct management of these patients is not only an essential but important area to be investigated. This report presents a case of a patient with McCune Albright Syndrome, the behavior of the disease over a period of 10 years and how imaging exams such as scintigraphy and tomography were important for planning the dental treatment of this patient, since they are fundamental allies for identification and evaluation of the progression and/or stability of the disease.

In a previous study, we found that Positive Reinforcement Training reduced cortisol of wolves and dogs; however, this effect varied across trainer-animal dyads. Here we investigate whether and how the trainers' use of speech may contribute to this effect. Dogs' great interest in high-pitched, intense speech (also known as Dog Directed Speech) has already been reported, but whether and how wolves respond similarly/differently to voice characteristics has never been studied before.

Phylogenomics reconciles molecular data with the rich fossil record on the origin of living turtles.

Mol Phylogenet Evol

June 2023

Laboratório de Biologia e Genômica Evolutiva, Instituto de Biologia, Departamento de Genética, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Electronic address:

Although a consensus exists that all living turtles fall within either Pleurodira or Cryptodira clades, estimating when these lineages split is still under debate. Most molecular studies date the split in the Triassic Period, whereas a Jurassic age is unanimous among morphological studies. Each hypothesis implies different paleobiogeographical scenarios to explain early turtle evolution.

All habitats have noise, but anthropogenic sounds often differ from natural sounds in terms of frequency, duration and intensity, and therefore may disrupt animal vocal communication. This study aimed to investigate whether vocalizations emitted by black-tufted marmosets () were affected by the noise produced by mining activity. Through passive acoustic monitoring, we compared the noise levels and acoustic parameters of the contact calls of marmosets living in two study areas (with two sampling points within each area)-one near and one far from an opencast mine in Brazil.

Ferulic acid (FA) has been widely used in the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industry due to its, inter alia, antioxidant, antiaging and anti-inflammatory effects This compound added to cosmetic preparations can protect skin because of its photoprotective activity. However, the usefulness of FA as a therapeutic agent is limited due to its low solubility and bioavailability. The paper presents the synthesis, identification, and physicochemical properties of new FA derivatives with propyl esters of three amino acids, glycine (GPr[FA]), L-leucine (LPr[FA]), and L-proline (PPr[FA]).

Congeneric species often coexist in sympatry using behavioral and morphological adaptations to reduce competition and interspecific interference, but reproductive patterns behind coexistence remain unknown. We analyzed the gonadal morphology and development, reproductive cycle, and population structure of two sympatric congeneric fishes to evaluate the degree of overlap and differentiation of the reproductive biology between species in a Neotropical river. Development of testes and ovaries were similar between species, both showing asynchronous gonadal development, large diameter of gametes and synthesis of mucosubstances by follicle cells to form adhesive eggs.
