Mining contributes importantly to tropical deforestation and land degradation. To mitigate these effects, mining companies are increasingly obliged to restore abandoned mine lands, but factors driving restoration success are hardly evaluated. Here, we investigate the influence of ecological factors (restoration age, soil properties and surrounding forest area) and management factors (diversity and density of planted species, mine zone) on the recovery rate of forest structure and tree diversity on 40 post-mining restoration areas in Southern Amazonia, Brazil, using a 9-year annual monitoring dataset consisting of over 25 000 trees.

Objective: Nail psoriasis is common, impairs fine motor finger functioning, affects cosmesis, and is associated with a lower quality of life. This review updates the previous Group for Research and Assessment of Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis (GRAPPA) treatment recommendations for nail psoriasis.
Methods: This systematic literature review of the PubMed, MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane databases examined the updated evidence since the last GRAPPA nail psoriasis treatment recommendations published in 2014.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the association of food consumption and body composition on bone parameters in adolescent soccer players.
Methods: There were 148 male soccer players 12 to 18 y who participated in the study. Body composition was assessed by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry, comprising bone mineral density (BMD) and bone mineral content (BMC) of total body without head (TBLH), lumbar spine (L1-L4), and right femoral neck (RFN).

Background: Recently, the role of subclinical inflammation in obesity has gained prominence. An association between obesity and chronic inflammation has been observed in several studies that show a relationship between increased morbidity and high Body Mass Index (BMI). This study aims to compare inflammatory pathways in obese (by high-fat diet) and non-obese mice after exposure to an intravesical carcinogen in a cystitis model.

Background: Increased cholesterol absorption and reduced synthesis are processes that have been associated with cardiovascular disease risk in a controversial way. However, most of the studies involving markers of cholesterol synthesis and absorption include conditions, such as obesity, diabetes, dyslipidemia, which can be confounding factors. The present study aimed at investigating the relationships of plasma cholesterol synthesis and absorption markers with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors, cIMT (carotid intima-media thickness), and the presence of carotid plaques in asymptomatic subjects.

Background: This study aimed to evaluate the associations between Lipoprotein (a) ‒ Lp(a) levels and carotid Intima-Media Thickness (cIMT) and with carotid plaques in healthy subjects because of previous contradictory data.
Methods: A total of 317 healthy normolipidemic subjects (20‒77 years old) were selected. The cIMT and atherosclerotic plaques were determined by B-mode ultrasonography.

In sickle cell disease (SCD), reduced bioavailability of endothelial NO and cGMP results in reduced expression of phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5), thus impairing the penile erection control mechanism and resulting in prolonged penile erection (priapism). In SCD, reduced NO bioavailability is associated with excess plasma hemoglobin due to intravascular hemolysis and increased oxidative stress. Haptoglobin is the plasma protein responsible for reducing plasma hemoglobin levels, but in SCD, haptoglobin levels are reduced, which favors the accumulation of hemoglobin in plasma.

Purpose: There are several surgical treatments for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) including lateral pharyngoplasty (LP) have yielded promising results, clearly improving symptoms of the disease. However, there are few publications in relation to polysomnographic (PSG) results, and patient selection remains a challenge. There are currently four pathophysiological phenotypes for OSA: anatomical, low arousal threshold, ventilatory instability, and poor muscle response.

Purpose: Bladder cancer is the 13th most common cause of cancer death with the highest lifetime cost for treatment of all cancers. This scoping review clarifies the available evidence on the role of a novel therapeutic approach called immunogenic cell death (ICD) in urothelial cancer of the bladder.
Methods: In accordance with the recommendations of the Joanna Briggs Institute, we searched MEDLINE (Ovid), EMBASE, CENTRAL databases, and supplemented with manual searches through the conferences, Google scholar, and clinicaltrials.

Aim: To model the impact of a 20 % tax on sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) on the disease burden of T2DM among Brazilian adults.
Methods: This is an ex-ante risk comparative study. The model applied a 20 % tax on SSB and projected the incidence, prevalence, and mortality of T2DM over a 20-year period (2019 to 2039).

Context: The advantages of minimally invasive surgery for radical prostatectomy (RP) have been demonstrated in a number of systematic reviews (SRs). However, the rigorous study selection process for SR means that a lot of information can be excluded, leading to a very specific clinical scenario that is often unrepresentative of real life. Our new reverse SR methodology generates a heterogeneous population database that covers a wide range of clinical scenarios.

Genetically modified (GM) seeds have had relevant impacts on worldwide agriculture, even with a limited number of essential traits launched in the markets. The focus on platforms crops has favored the combination of traditional breeding, GM insertion, and diffusion in agriculture. One of the remarkable features of the GM traits has been the close link with pest and weed control systems.

Patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) display priapism. Clinical studies have shown a strong positive correlation between priapism and high levels of intravascular hemolysis in men with SCD. However, there are no experimental studies that show that intravascular hemolysis promotes alterations in erectile function.

Background: Inborn errors of immunity (IEI) are underdiagnosed disorders, leading to increased morbimortality and expenses for healthcare system.
Objectives: The study aimed to develop and compare risk prediction model to measure the individual chance of a confirmed diagnosis of IEI in children at risk for this disorder.
Method: Clinical and laboratory data of 128 individuals were used to derive machine learning (ML) and logistic regression risk prediction models, to measure the individual chance of a confirmed diagnosis of IEI in children with suspected disorder, according to previous general pediatrician/clinician judgement.

Purpose: Among diverse Pattern Recognition Receptors (PRRs), Toll-like receptor-4 (TLR-4) is a key urothelial trigger for innate immune response impacting urothelial bladder carcinoma (BC). Androgen activation promotes immunotolerance, playing an immunoregulatory role by unknown mechanisms. We explored the castration impact on urothelial TLR-4 modulation in carcinogenesis and immunotherapeutic scenario.
