Using supramolecular interactions, a novel macrocyclic receptor is able to selectively extract zwitterionic phenylglycine from neutral aqueous solutions into chloroform with up to 91.8% . Modeling studies, nuclear magnetic resonance experiments, and X-ray diffraction analysis were carried out to explain the high enantioselectivity observed.

Background: Genes are known as functional patterns in the genome and are presumed to have biological significance. They can indicate binding sites for transcription factors and they encode certain proteins. Finding genes from biological sequences is a major task in computational biology for unraveling the mechanisms of gene expression.

The threat to people's lives and property posed by fires has become increasingly serious. To address the problem of a high false alarm rate in traditional fire detection, an innovative detection method based on multifeature fusion of flame is proposed. First, we combined the motion detection and color detection of the flame as the fire preprocessing stage.

The world's reservoirs are losing capacity at a rate of 0.5-1% a year due to sedimentation processes. The strategies to reverse this trend must include an accurate estimation of sedimentation rates in terms of Specific Sediment Yield (SSY).

NERIS is the European platform on preparedness for nuclear and radiological emergency response and recovery. Created in 2010 with 57 organisations from 28 different countries, the objectives of the platform are to: improve the effectiveness and coherency of current approaches to preparedness; identify further development needs; improve 'know how' and technical expertise; and establish a forum for dialogue and methodological development. The NERIS Strategic Research Agenda is now structured with three main challenges: (i) radiological impact assessments during all phases of nuclear and radiological events; (ii) countermeasures and countermeasure strategies in emergency and recovery, decision support, and disaster informatics; and (iii) setting up a multi-faceted framework for preparedness for emergency response and recovery.

This paper presents a novel structural piezoresistive pressure sensor with four-grooved membrane combined with rood beam to measure low pressure. In this investigation, the design, optimization, fabrication, and measurements of the sensor are involved. By analyzing the stress distribution and deflection of sensitive elements using finite element method, a novel structure featuring high concentrated stress profile (HCSP) and locally stiffened membrane (LSM) is built.

A novel structural piezoresistive pressure sensor with annularly grooved membrane combined with rood beam has been proposed for low pressure measurements based on silicon substrate. In this study, a design method, including the model design, dimensions optimization, and performance prediction of the novel structure sensor, is presented. The finite element method has been used to analyze the stress distribution of sensitive elements and the deflection of membrane.

In this paper we present a novel approach to integrate non-structured and structured sources of biomedical information. We part from previous research on database integration conducted in the context of the EC funded INFOGENMED project. In this project we developed the ONTOFUSION system, which provides a robust framework to integrate large sets of structured biomedical sources.

Aim: The aim of this study was to examine the kinematical, physiological and technical load imposed on soccer players during three typical small-sided 3-a-side training games carried out in an artificial grass 33x20 m surface.
Methods: Kinematic analysis was carried out with a bidimensional photogrammetric video system. Heart rate was recorded at 5 s intervals using Polar Accurex Plus heart rate monitors and expressed in relation to individual maximal heart rate (HR(max)).

Spatially variant apodization (SVA) is a nonlinear sidelobe reduction technique that improves sidelobe level and preserves resolution at the same time. This method implements a bidimensional finite impulse response filter with adaptive taps depending on image information. Some papers that have been previously published analyze SVA at the Nyquist rate or at higher rates focused on strip synthetic aperture radar (SAR).

In this paper a new family of test statistics is presented for testing the independence between the binary response Y and an ordered categorical explanatory variable X (doses) against the alternative hypothesis of an increase dose-response relationship between a response variable Y and X (doses). The properties of these test statistics are studied. This new family of test statistics is based on the family of φ-divergence measures and contains as a particular case the likelihood ratio test.

Objectives: Epidemiologists are reformulating their classical approaches to diseases by considering various issues associated to "omics" areas and technologies. Traditional differences between epidemiology and genetics include background, training, terminologies, study designs and others. Public health and epidemiology are increasingly looking forward to using methodologies and informatics tools, facilitated by the Bioinformatics community, for managing genomic information.

Objective: To describe potential areas of collaboration between Medical Informatics (BI) and Bioinformatics (BI) and their effects on planning future work in both disciplines.
Methods: Some reflections on the objectives and rationale underpinning MI and BI are given, and preliminary results from the BIOINFOMED workgroup, supported by the European Commission, are introduced.
Results: Applications from both subfields suggest topics for sharing and exchange between the subfields within the emerging field of Biomedical Informatics.

Over the past decade there have been several attempts to rethink the basic strategies and scope of medical informatics. Meanwhile, bioinformatics has only recently experienced a similar debate about its scientific character. Both disciplines envision the development of novel diagnostic, therapeutic, and management tools, and products for patient care.

Objective: To analyze the scientific and engineering components of Medical Informatics. A clear characterization of these components should be undertaken to categorize different areas of Medical Informatics and create a research agenda for the future.
Methods: We have adapted a classical ACM and IEEE report on computing to analyze Medical Informatics from three different viewpoints: Theory, Abstraction, and Design.
