Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine [5-HT]) may induce metabolic effects in different cell types, including leukocytes. In horses, 5-HT is involved in physiological and behavioral functions. Physical exercise is known to increase the amounts of 5-HT both in brain and periphery, but so far, the signal mechanism in response to exercise is not known.

High hydroxycinnamic acids contents in fennel honey produced in Southern Italy.

A total of 122 honey samples ( ssp. Ligustica) collected from Southern Italy were examined for floral identification by melissopalynological examination and for polyphenols detection by an LC-ESI-Orbitrap -MS/MS method. The melissopalynological examination confirmed all the samples examined as fennel () unifloral variety.

Combined laparoscopic ovariectomy and laparoscopic-assisted gastropexy versus combined laparoscopic ovariectomy and total laparoscopic gastropexy: A comparison of surgical time, complications and postoperative pain in dogs.

The trend in laparoscopy is to develop easy and rapid techniques associated with reduced intraoperative complications and decreased postoperative pain. The aim of this study was to compare combined laparoscopic ovariectomy (OIE) and laparoscopic-assisted incisional gastropexy (LAG) with combined laparoscopic OIE and total laparoscopic gastropexy (TLG) for surgical time, incidence of complications and postoperative pain. Twenty-eight female dogs were randomly assigned to the LAG group (n = 14) or the TLG group (n = 14).

The Influence of Training and Simulated Race on Horse Plasma Serotonin Levels.

Exercise represents a physical stress that challenges homeostasis affecting central and peripheral serotoninergic systems. The influence of the exercise on circulating serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine [5-HT]) levels depends on training state as well as the exercise protocol. The purpose of the present research was to determine changes of plasma 5-HT in sport horses in response to training (T) and simulated race (SR) and in addition to assess the possible presence of significant differences on circulating 5-HT between two different sessions of exercise.

Clock Genes Expression in Peripheral Leukocytes and Plasma Melatonin Daily Rhythm in Horses.

In mammals, behavioral and physiological processes display 24-hour rhythms that are regulated by the circadian system. In the present study, we investigated clock gene expression in peripheral leukocytes in horses. For this purpose, 10 Italian Saddle gelding horses (9-11 years old; 475 ± 28 Kg) were housed in individual boxes under natural photoperiod and natural environmental temperature.

Land Snails as a Valuable Source of Fatty Acids: A Multivariate Statistical Approach.

The fatty acid (FA) profile of wild , and land snail samples, collected in Sicily (Southern Italy), before and after heat treatment at +100 °C were examined by gas chromatography with a flame ionization detector (GC-FID). The results show a higher content of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in all of the examined raw snails samples, representing up to 48.10% of the total fatty acids contents, followed by monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs).

The taxonomic, morphological and meristic features of a dark eel caught by commercial trawling off the Gulf of Patti, southern Tyrrhenian Sea, Mediterranean Sea, February 17, 2017, showed it to be a female Conger conger. Histological analysis of gonads demonstrated that the individual was in a post-spawning phase. X-ray radiographs showed widespread decalcification of skeleton and teeth loss, confirming a strong mobilisation of somatic energy reserves needed for reproductive development.

For the Cucurbitaceae family, grafting technique has been used to improve resistance to abiotic stresses, crop productivity and fruit qualitative characteristics.

Although the epidemiology of pathogenic Candida species causing invasive human diseases is changing, Candida albicans still remains the most common cause of bloodstream infections worldwide. The propensity of this pathogen to cause infections is undoubtedly the result of its unique genetic plasticity that allow it to adapt and respond quickly to a myriad of changing conditions both in the host and in the environment. For this reason, we decided to investigate the genetic diversity of this important fungal pathogen in a particular category of patients with severe neurological deficits including the hospital environments where they are hospitalized.

Colonization of floats from submerged derelict fishing gears by four protected species of deep-sea corals and barnacles in the Strait of Messina (central Mediterranean Sea).

The distribution of floating litter in marine waters, influenced by currents and wind drag, often determines the dispersal of its encrusting fauna. In the present paper, we observed for the first time the colonization of rafting floats from abandoned, lost or derelict fishing gears (ALDFG) by the four protected deep-sea species: Errina aspera, Desmophyllum pertusum, Madrepora oculata Pachylasma giganteum. Overall, 41 floats, colonized by deep benthic species, were found stranded on the shore of the Sicilian coast of the Strait of Messina, between 2016 and 2019.

First record of infestation by nasal leeches, Limnatis nilotica (Hirudinida, Praobdellidae), from cattle in Italy.

In July 2017, twenty cattle of a free-grazing herd were found to be infested with leeches in the mouth. Main signs were bloody sialorrhea and/or a purple-red colour of the lower lip. Leeches, in a variable number (1 to 3) per animal, were found at the lingual frenulum or on the sublingual vestibular mucosa and were morphologically identified as Limnatis nilotica.

Serum haptoglobin and protein electrophoretic fraction modifications in buffaloes () around calving and during early lactation.

Serum protein distribution and concentration can be affected by different physiological and pathological conditions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the changes in the concentration of serum protein fractions and haptoglobin in clinically healthy dairy buffaloes during late pregnancy and early lactation. Blood and milk samples were collected from 30 buffaloes at around 7 d before expected calving (blood only) and 7, 30 and 50 d after calving.

This study reports the presence of cartilaginous cysts in zebrafish gills, purchased at the end of 2012 before the application of the Italian Legislative Decree 26/2014 and used for experimental research. It highlights the importance of using specific pathogen-free organisms from reliable production establishments to avoid obtaining false results in experiments. Of 20 samples analyzed, 4 showed cysts in gills, with abnormal tissue modification and cartilaginous metaplasia induced by prolonged parasitic insult.

Tetracycline Residues in Bovine Muscle and Liver Samples from Sicily (Southern Italy) by LC-MS/MS Method: A Six-Year Study.

We examined a total of 369 bovine liver and muscle samples for the detection of oxytetracycline (OTC), tetracycline (TC), chlortetracycline (CTC), and doxycycline (DOX) residues by implementation and validation of a LC-MS/MS method. The method showed good recovery values between 86% and 92% at three levels of concentrations. The linearity tests revealed r² > 0.

Inflammation is a complex mechanism that plays a key role during diseases. Dynamic features of the extracellular matrix (ECM), in particular, during phases of tissue inflammation, have long been appreciated, and a great deal of several investigations has focused on the effects of ECM derivatives on cell function. It has been well defined that during inflammatory and tissue injury, ECM components were degraded.

The effect of intramuscular dexmedetomidine-butorphanol combination on tear production in dogs.

This study assessed the effects of a combination of dexmedetomidine and butorphanol on the Schirmer tear test I (STT I) values in dogs. Ninety-eight dogs were sedated with an intramuscular injection of a combination of dexmedetomidine, 5 μg/kg body weight (BW), and butorphanol, 0.2 mg/kg BW.

Flow cytometry and micro-Raman spectroscopy: Identification of hemocyte populations in the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis (Bivalvia: Mytilidae) from Faro Lake and Tyrrhenian Sea (Sicily, Italy).

Immunological and structural characteristics of hemocyte populations in the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis (Bivalvia: Mytilidae), going from two different Sicilian habitats (Faro Lake and Tyrrhenian sea), was investigated by means of two different techniques (flow cytometric and micro-Raman spectroscopy analyses). For this purpose, three hundred and sixty mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis were analyzed during November 2017. They were divided into two equal groups (triplicate sample) on the basis of the site of collection (n = 60 caught in Faro Lake - group A, and n = 60 caught in Tyrrhenian Sea - group B).
