Hydrogels are interesting materials as delivery systems of various therapeutic agents, mainly due to the water-swollen network and the localized and sustained drug release. Herein, single-component starch-based hydrogels with enhanced degradation rates were produced by applying a facile synthesis and proposed for a novel delivery system of therapeutic molecules. Starch was oxidized with sodium periodate in water and mild conditions to generate aldehyde derivatives that, after a freeze-thaw procedure, were allowed to compact and stable hydrogels.

This paper presents the design and prototype of a constant volume (isochoric) vessel that can be used for the preservation of large organs in a supercooled state. This prototype is a preliminary version of a more advanced design. The device consists of a cooling bath operated by a mechanical vapor compression refrigeration unit and an isochoric chamber made of stainless steel.

In this study, sintering effects on microstructural behavior of bovine derived hydroxyapatite doped with powder mullite are considered in the temperature range between 1000°C and 1300°C. Results show that maximum values of both compressive strength and microhardness are achieved in the samples sintered at 1200°C for all mullite additions of 5, 7.5, 10 and 12.

Hierarchical flowers-like zinc oxide structures have been successfully obtained by a simple and fast ultrasound-assisted method performed in a ordinary ultrasonic bath using an ammonia solution and zinc acetate, in the absence of any surfactant or template. The composition, structure, crystallinity, morphology and optical properties of the materials obtained at different ultrasound irradiation times were characterized by infrared, UV-Vis and photoluminescence spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopy investigations. It was proved that the ultrasound irradiation time manipulates both the defect content (implicit the photoluminescent properties) and morphology of the ZnO materials: shorter irradiation times leads to the synthesis of high-defected ZnO structures of flower morphology with triangular-shaped petals, while higher irradiation times favours the formation of low-defected ZnO structures with tipped rod-like petals.

The histidine-modified EGFP was characterized as a sensing element that preferentially binds nanomolar concentrations of Cu(2+) in a reversible manner (Kd = 15 nM). This research aims to determine the causes of nanomolar-affinity of this mutant by investigating significant structural and energetic alterations of the chromophore in the presence of different copper ion concentrations. In order to reveal the unknown parts of the quenching mechanism we have elaborated a specific approach that combines theoretical and experimental techniques.

A starch-assisted synthetic methodology of multispheres ZnO-starch biocomposites was developed. An additional thermal processing of the ZnO-starch composites induces the formation of ZnO with donut-like morphology. The synthesis of single-phase zinc oxide with a spherical morphology is conditioned by the presence of starch, which acts as template, stabilizing/capping agent.

Potentials routinely used in atomistic molecular dynamics simulations are not always suitable for modeling systems at coarse-grained resolution. For example, in the calculation of traditional torsion angle potentials, numerical instability is often encountered in the case of very flexible molecules. To improve the stability and accuracy of coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations, we propose two approaches.

Two histidines were introduced by site-directed mutagenesis into the structure of Enhanced Green Fluorescent Protein, replacing the serine at position 202 and the glutamine at position 204 for increasing the sensitivity of the protein towards different metal ions by creating possible metal binding sites near the chromophore group. There is no appreciable difference between the absorbance and fluorescence spectra of the two proteins (wild type and the double-histidine mutant) indicating that the mutation does not change the environment of the fluorophore. Fluorescence quenching was measured at different pH (6.

Biofilms formed by fungal organisms are associated with drastically enhanced resistance against most antimicrobial agents, contributing to the persistence of the fungi despite antifungal therapy. The purpose of this study is to combine the unique properties of nanoparticles with the antimicrobial activity of the Rosmarinus officinalis essential oil in order to obtain a nanobiosystem that could be pelliculised on the surface of catheter pieces, in order to obtain an improved resistance to microbial colonization and biofilm development by Candida albicans and C. tropicalis clinical strains.

This paper gives a regular vector boundary integral equation for solving the problem of viscous scattering of a pressure wave by a rigid body. Firstly, single-layer viscous potentials and a generalized stress tensor are introduced. Correspondingly, generalized viscous double-layer potentials are defined.
