Animals (Basel)

December 2024

Centro de Estudos de Ciência Animal (CECA), Instituto de Ciências, Tecnologias e Agroambiente da Universidade do Porto (ICETA), Rua D. Manuel II, Apartado 55142, 4051-401 Porto, Portugal.

The aim of this preliminary study was to morphologically and dimensionally characterize the cat's olfactory bulb in the sagittal plane and to establish potential relationships with the cranial conformation, based on the study of in vivo MRI images. Midsagittal and transverse T2-weighted images of the head of 40 cats subjected to MRI were selected. For each animal, the skull index was calculated to classify the cranial conformation.

January 2025

CNC-UC Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology, University of Coimbra, Coimbra 3004-504, Portugal; Institute for Interdisciplinary Research (IIIUC), University of Coimbra, Casa Costa Alemão, Coimbra 3030-789, Portugal; CIBB - Center for Innovative Biomedicine and Biotechnology, University of Coimbra, Coimbra 3004-504, Portugal. Electronic address:

Subcutaneous (SAT) and visceral (VAT) adipose tissue dysfunction during the obesity onset can lead to increased expression of inflammatory molecules, and consequently to immune cell infiltration. The aim was to deeply characterize the T cells, those infiltrating SAT and VAT, compared to peripheral blood (PB), in individuals undergoing bariatric surgery. Forty-two adult individuals were recruited, SAT and VAT samples were collected.

Background: The percentage of Portuguese psoriasis patients with psoriatic arthritis is unknown but musculoskeletal complaints related to PsA affect up to a third of patients. Dermatologists can identify early PsA as skin symptoms often precede joint symptoms in 80% of patients. Efficient and easy to perform screening tools are needed to help dermatologists effectively discriminate between Pso and PsA patients.

Type 2 inflammation: a Portuguese consensus using Web-Delphi and decision conferencing (INFLAT2-PT).

Expert Rev Clin Immunol

January 2025

CEGIST-Centro de Estudos de Gestão, Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa, Lisbon, Portugal.

Background/objectives: Robust evidence regarding the management after endoscopic resection of malignant colorectal polyps (MCP) is lacking. Inconsistencies in reporting on potential prognostic factors hinder the decision process. To address these issues, the Scottish Screen-detected Polyp Cancer Study (SSPoCS) introduced an algorithm based in two easily obtainable variables: resection margin and lymphovascular invasion.

We present an elite footballer in his 20s with a large and symptomatic osteochondral lesion of the weight-bearing area of the medial femoral condyle, who was proposed for a single plug fresh osteochondral allograft transplantation. The lesion was due to repetitive micro traumas and had become highly symptomatic being responsible for making the football practice at a professional level almost impossible, reaching a point that keeping an elite sports career was compromised. Six months after surgery, the athlete returned to sports and, at a 3-year follow-up, still participated in elite high-level football, with a Tegner Activity Scale 10/10, IKDC 93.

Background And Objectives: Erectile dysfunction (ED) is an independent and strong marker of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. The Princeton Consensus aimed to evaluate and manage cardiovascular risk in men with ED and no known cardiovascular disease, focusing on identifying those requiring additional cardiologic work-up. It has recently been updated to the American population demographics, but European recommendations are needed.

Background: Ureteral stents are one of the most used devices in Urology, allowing drainage of the upper urinary system, and can be used either in elective or emergency procedures. However, as a foreign body inside the urinary system, they are subject to encrustation. Encrustation is one of the burdens seen with double-J stents and, to date, there is no consensus about its best management.

A teenage girl who had recently begun playing saxophone presented with recurrent painless right cheek swelling for six months. Despite several courses of antibiotics, the swelling continued to re-occur. On examination, enlargement of the right parotid gland and crepitus over the same region are noted, with no signs of acute inflammation.

Squamous cell carcinoma of the vulva (vSCC) is currently categorized either as human papillomavirus (HPV) associated or independent. Immunohistochemical stains, p16INK4a (p16) and p53 are helpful biomarkers to support the designation of vSCC into 1 of the 3 tumor pathways: (1) HPV-associated, (2) HPV-independent, TP53 mutant, or (3) HPV-independent, TP53 wild type. Recently, a framework of p53 expression patterns in vSCC was proposed.

This article discusses the application of three-dimensional (3D) printing in reconstructing the orbital floor of a middle-aged male patient who suffered an orbital fracture due to a fall. A virtual 3D model of the fractured orbit was created using open-source software, allowing for the planning of the defect reconstruction by mirroring the contralateral orbit. A metal reconstruction plate was then molded based on the 3D printed model, sterilized, and utilized during surgery, which resulted in reduced surgical time and improved adaptation.

is a zoonotic pathogen commonly found in pigs, capable of causing disease in humans when in contact with contaminated pigs or pork products. The most common presentation in humans is meningitis, although it can also manifest as sepsis, arthritis, endocarditis, or endophthalmitis. In Europe, most cases are described as occupational disease related to pig farming or raw pork handling.

Objective: Outcome registries in vascular surgery are increasingly used to drive quality improvement by vascular societies. The VASCUNET collaboration, within the European Society for Vascular Surgery (ESVS), and the International Consortium of Vascular Registries (ICVR) developed a set of variables for quality improvement registries on abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair as a registry standard.

Methods: Representatives from international vascular registries within VASCUNET, ICVR, and other nations with established registries were invited to provide the variables.

Background: Cirrhosis is one of the major causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide and the second leading cause of digestive disease mortality. Portal hypertension is the main driver of cirrhosis-related complications such as ascites and variceal bleeding. Portal hypertension is defined as a hepatic venous pressure gradient >5 mm Hg, although it is clinically significant and associated with clinical complications when >10 mm Hg.

Purpose: Optical coherence tomography (OCT)-derived measurements of the optic nerve head (ONH) from different devices are not interchangeable. This poses challenges to patient follow-up and collaborative studies. Here, we present a device-agnostic method for the extraction of OCT biomarkers using artificial intelligence.

Joint Bone Spine

November 2024

Copenhagen Center for Arthritis Research (COPECARE), Center for Rheumatology and Spine Diseases, Centre for Head and Orthopedics, Rigshospitalet, Glostrup, Denmark. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the retention rates and remission outcomes of patients with axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA) who started treatment with secukinumab over 24 and 48 months.
  • Data was collected from 13 European registries, revealing that retention rates were around 51%-64%, and patients with no prior biologic treatments showed better outcomes compared to those with previous treatments.
  • The findings suggest that secukinumab remains effective over four years, with higher success rates in treatment-naïve patients compared to those who had already tried other therapies.
