Alterations in miRNA levels have been observed in various types of cancer, impacting numerous cellular processes and increasing their potential usefulness in combination therapies also in brain tumors. Recent advances in understanding the genetics and epigenetics of brain tumours point to new aberrations and associations, making it essential to continually update knowledge and classification. Here we conducted molecular analysis of 123 samples of childhood brain tumors (pilocytic astrocytoma, medulloblastoma, ependymoma), focusing on identification of genes that could potentially be regulated by crucial representatives of OncomiR-1: miR-17-5p and miR-20a-5p.

(1) Background: Hemangiomas in Von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) syndrome patients are typically benign but pose threats due to their vital locations involving the central nervous system and the retina. An MRI is currently recommended as the gold standard for tumors associated with VHL in the head region. This narrative review aims to comprehensively outline current standards and recent findings related to imaging of retinal and CNS hemangiomas in Von Hippel-Lindau syndrome.

Irisin (Ir) is an adipomyokine formed from fibronectin type III domain-containing protein 5 (FNDC5), which can be found in various cancer tissues. Additionally, FNDC5/Ir is suspected of inhibiting the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) process. This relationship has been poorly studied for breast cancer (BC).

Background And Objectives: Reports assessing the association of stroke risk factors with incident stroke have generally assumed a uniform magnitude of associations across the age spectrum, an assumption we assess in this report.
Methods: Participants enrolled 2003-2007 in the REasons for Geographic And Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) cohort study who were stroke free at baseline were followed for incident stroke. Associations of traditional stroke risk factors with incident stroke were assessed using (1) proportional hazards analysis based on the baseline age of the participant and (2) Poisson regression analysis assessing associations based on the changing age of the participant during their follow-up (age at exposure).

Numerous molecular factors disrupt the correctness of the cell cycle process leading to the development of cancer due to increased cell proliferation. Among known causative factors of such process is abnormal gene expression. Nowadays in the light of current knowledge such alterations are frequently considered in the context of mRNA-miRNA correlation.

The role of serotonin in the pathogenesis of depression is well-documented, while the involvement of other tryptophan (TRP) metabolites generated in the kynurenine pathway is less known. The aim of this study was to assess the intake and metabolism of TRP in elderly patients with mood disorders. Ninety subjects in three groups, 30 subjects each, were enrolled in this study: controls (healthy young adults, group I) and elderly individuals without (group II) or with (group III) symptoms of mild and moderate depression, as assessed by the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D) and further referred to as mood disorders.

Nowadays molecular investigations have a significant impact on the understanding of primary brain tumour biology,as well as on their classification and progress in the treatment modalities. Among novel type of biomarkers with potential therapeutic value, microRNAs (miRNAs) are considered in some cases. miRNAs are small molecules regu-lating gene expression, including genes encoding key proteins involved in signalling pathways responsible for growth and cell survival during tumour formation.

Several studies show that triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) patients have the lowest vitamin D concentration among all breast cancer types, suggesting that this vitamin may induce a protective effect against TNBC. This effect of the active metabolite of vitamin D, 1α,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1,25(OH)2D), can be attributed to its potential to modulate proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, inflammation, angiogenesis, invasion and metastasis and is supported by many in vitro and animal studies, but its exact mechanism is poorly known. In a fraction of TNBCs that harbor mutations that cause the loss of function of the DNA repair-associated breast cancer type 1 susceptibility () gene, 1,25(OH)2D may induce protective effects by activating its receptor and inactivating cathepsin L-mediated degradation of tumor protein P53 binding protein 1 (TP53BP1), preventing deficiency in DNA double-strand break repair and contributing to genome stability.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of pregestational diabetes mellitus (DM) on fetal cardiac function two-dimensional parameters using spectral and tissue Doppler. Pregnant women between 20 and 36 + 6 weeks gestation were divided into three groups: controls, type I DM, and type II DM. The right ventricle (RV) and left ventricle (LV) annular velocity peaks were measured using spectral (E, A) and tissue (E', A', S') Doppler.

Encephalocraniocutaneous lipomatosis (ECCL) is a rare neurocutaneous disorder, with only about 100 cases reported worldwide. It is characterized by congenital lesions of the eye, skin, and central nervous system. Only recently, potential causative FGFR1 point mutations have been identified in brain tumors and cultured skin biopsies from patients with this condition.

Background: The understanding of the molecular biology of pediatric neuronal and mixed neuronal-glial brain tumors is still insufficient due to low frequency and heterogeneity of those lesions which comprise several subtypes presenting neuronal and/or neuronal-glial differentiation. Important is that the most frequent ganglioglioma (GG) and dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumor (DNET) showed limited number of detectable molecular alterations. In such cases analyses of additional genomic mechanisms seem to be the most promising.

Prenatal diagnosis of congenital heart disease (CHD) leads to improved outcome but not mortality rate. This may not be the case for coarctation of the aorta (CoA). The objective of this study is to estimate the effect of a prenatal diagnosis of CoA by comparing neonates with CoA by the time of diagnosis.

Objective: Prenatal congenital heart disease classification systems distinguish between critical dextro-transposition of the great arteries (d-TGA) with restriction of the foramen ovale (FO) (which requires a Rashkind procedure within the first 24 h following delivery) and d-TGA for which surgery is planned (after prostaglandin perfusion or Rashkind procedure later than 24 h after delivery). However, current prenatal diagnostic criteria for postnatal FO restriction in d-TGA are inadequate, resulting in a high false-negative rate. We aimed to identify echocardiographic features to predict the urgent need for Rashkind procedure.

Background: Ependymal tumors are the third most common group of brain tumors in children, accounting for about 10% of all primary brain neoplasms. According to the current WHO classification, they comprise four entities with the most frequent ependymoma and anaplastic ependymoma. The most of pediatric tumors are located within the posterior fossa, with a tendency to infiltrate the vital brain structures.
