Background: Anaesthesiologists and intensive care doctors have become progressively more mobile across Europe. The standardisation of training systems has been recommended by the European Union of Medical Specialist (UEMS) to facilitate the mutual recognition of professionals.

Objective: We aimed to assess the level of compliance with the 2018 European training requirements (ETR) for the specialty of anaesthesiology, pain and intensive care medicine.

Salvianolic Acid B Strikes Back: New Evidence in the Modulation of Expression and Activity of Matrix Metalloproteinase 9 in MDA-MB-231 Human Breast Cancer Cells.

Salvianolic acid B (SalB) is a bioactive compound from , one of the most important traditional herbal medicines widely used in several countries for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases. The aim of this study was to evaluate the in vitro effect of SalB on the expression and the activity of matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9), a zinc-dependent proteolytic enzyme, in human MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells. This cellular model is characterized by a marked invasive phenotype, supported by a high constitutive expression of MMPs, especially gelatinases.

Risk factors and preventive strategies for post-traumatic stress disorder in neonatal intensive care unit.

Background: Preterm birth and admission to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) could induce post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). PTSD is an important factor to focus on, as it is associated with parental mental health difficulties and with changes in caregiving quality such as increased intrusiveness, reduced sensitivity, and increased attachment insecurity for the child.

Aims: We aimed to study the main risk factors, in the early life of newborns, and preventive measures for PTSD in parents of neonates hospitalized in the NICU.

Robotic assisted simple prostatectomy versus other treatment modalities for large benign prostatic hyperplasia: a systematic review and meta-analysis of over 6500 cases.

Background: Current guidelines recommend simple prostatectomy or endoscopic enucleation of the prostate (EEP) as treatment of choice for bladder prostatic obstruction (BPO) caused by large prostate glands. We aimed to provide a wide-ranging analysis of the currently available evidence, comparing safety and effectiveness of robot-assisted simple prostatectomy (RASP) versus open simple prostatectomy (OSP), laparoscopic simple prostatectomy (LSP), and laser EEP.

Methods: A systematic search was performed across MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Web of Science databases for retrospective and prospective studies comparing RASP to OSP or LSP or laser EEP (HoLEP/ThuLEP).

Antibiotics, the microbiome and gastrointestinal cancers: A causal interference?

Our understanding of the gut microbiota has significantly evolved over the last two decades. Advances in the analysis of the gut microbiome continues to reveal complex microbial communities and discoveries about their role in health and diseases, including cancer development, are continuously growing. In addition, research has demonstrated that the use of antibiotics can modulate the gut microbiota composition negatively and influence cancer treatment outcomes, suggesting that antibiotics should be avoided if possible.

Lung transplantation in patients with a history of anatomical native lung resection.

Objectives: History of anatomical lung resection complicates lung transplantation (LTx). Our aim was to identify indications, intraoperative approach and outcome in these challenging cases in a retrospective multicentre cohort analysis.

Methods: Members of the ESTS Lung Transplantation Working Group were invited to submit data on patients undergoing LTx after a previous anatomical native lung resection between January 2005 and July 2020.

Purpose: Left ventricular diastolic dysfunction (LVDD) is associated with poor outcomes in the intensive care unit (ICU). Nonetheless, precise reporting of LVDD in COVID-19 patients is currently lacking and assessment could be challenging.

Methods: We performed an echocardiography study in COVID-19 patients admitted to ICU with the aim to describe the feasibility of full or simplified LVDD assessment and its incidence.

Pregnancy after sexuality preserving cystectomy with urinary diversion for bladder cancer: case report and review of the literature.

Background: Radical cystectomy for bladder cancer represents a high demolitive surgical procedure with a significative impact on quality of life. Sexuality preserving techniques have been proposed in order to improve functional outcomes. Although sex-sparing techniques would provide women with the chance of having pregnancy, experience is still limited when malignant conditions are considered.

Early Experience with Ovation Alto Stent-Graft.

Background: Alto is the latest generation of the Ovation stent-graft platform for endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR). Its ultra-low profile and its proximal sealing zone close to the lowest renal artery (≥7 mm) increase standard EVAR eligibility. We report early clinical and technical outcomes with the Alto stent-graft in our University Hospital Center after CE Mark approval in August 2020.

Surgery for late type Ia/IIIb endoleak from a fabric tear and stent fracture of AFX2 stent graft.

Technical improvements and labeling updates of the AFX2 stent graft (Endologix Inc, Irvine, CA) seemed to have solved the known issues of its previous generation (AFX Strata). Although most endograft failures after endovascular abdominal aortic aneurysm repair will be managed endovascularly, a small subset of patients will still require secondary open conversion. Partial or complete endograft removal can be required, mainly dependent on the characteristics of the stent graft previously placed.

Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPyV) has been detected in respiratory specimens including those from Cystic Fibrosis (CF) patients, raising questions about its immunological and clinical relevance in the respiratory tract. MCPyV might promote an inappropriate antiviral response contributing to a chronic inflammatory response and resulting in detrimental effects in CF. Respiratory samples (n = 1138) were randomly collected from respiratory tract of CF patients (n = 539) during July 2018-October 2019.

Pilot Investigation on p75ICD Expression in Laryngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

We investigated the p75 Neurotrophin Receptor (p75NTR) expression and cleavage product p75NTR Intracellular Domain (p75ICD) as potential oncogenic and metastatic markers in human Laryngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma (LSCC). p75NTR is highly expressed in Cancer Stem Cells (CSCs) of the laryngeal epithelia and it has been proposed as a marker for stemness, cell migration, and chemo-resistance in different squamous carcinomas. To investigate the clinical significance of p75NTR cleavage products in solid tumors, full-length and cleaved p75NTR expression was analyzed in laryngeal primary tumors from different-stage LSCC patients, diagnosed at the Policlinico Umberto I Hospital.

Ascorbate Plus Buformin in AML: A Metabolic Targeted Treatment.

In the present study, we characterized the metabolic background of different Acute Myeloid Leukemias' (AMLs) cells and described a heterogeneous and highly flexible energetic metabolism. Using the Seahorse XF Agilent, we compared the metabolism of normal hematopoietic progenitors with that of primary AML blasts and five different AML cell lines. We assessed the efficacy and mechanism of action of the association of high doses of ascorbate, a powerful oxidant, with the metabolic inhibitor buformin, which inhibits mitochondrial complex I and completely shuts down mitochondrial contributions in ATP production.

Patients' perceptions of quality of care delivery by urology residents: A nationwide study.

Objective: To present the results of a nationwide survey among urological patients to evaluate their perception of the quality of care provided by residents.

Methods: An anonymous survey was distributed to patients who were referred to 22 Italian academic institutions. The survey aimed to investigate the professional figure of the urology resident as perceived by the patient.

Echocardiography findings in COVID-19 patients admitted to intensive care units: a multi-national observational study (the ECHO-COVID study).

Introduction: Sexual function is often impaired in patients with chronic illnesses. Several patients with chronic gastrointestinal and liver disorders have been shown to suffer from sexual dysfunction, and celiac disease is a highly prevalent gastroenterological disorder.
