Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how body mass index (BMI) affects the effectiveness of biological therapies for treating chronic plaque psoriasis, revealing that obesity (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m) leads to poorer treatment responses.
  • Data collected from 504 patients showed that those with a BMI < 30 kg/m had significantly better short-term improvements in psoriasis severity compared to obese patients, as well as higher long-term treatment retention rates.
  • The findings suggest that obesity negatively impacts the efficacy of certain biological treatments, particularly anti-interleukin drugs, while others, like anti-tumor necrosis factor therapies, are less affected.

Electronic address:

Synapsins (Syns) are phosphoproteins strongly involved in neuronal development and neurotransmitter release. Three distinct genes SYN1, SYN2 and SYN3, with elevated evolutionary conservation, have been described to encode for Synapsin I, Synapsin II and Synapsin III, respectively. Syns display a series of common features, but also exhibit distinctive localization, expression pattern, post-translational modifications (PTM).

Objective: Some conventional laboratory tests are routinely used for the prediction of systemic autoimmune disease activity, such as the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and C-reactive protein (CRP); however, they can give false-negative results, pointing out the need to identify more specific markers.

Methods: We evaluated biomarkers in 21 Italian patients naïve to treatment with a diagnosis of autoimmune rheumatic disease according to the 2010 American College of Rheumatology/European League Against Rheumatism Classification Criteria for Rheumatoid Arthritis during 6 months of therapeutic treatments.

Results: We found a significant difference in interleukin-6 (IL-6), CRP, ESR, platelet count, and fecal calprotectin in diagnosed patients compared with healthy participants and a significant decrease in these values during follow-up, except for IL-6 and platelet count.

Combined antiretroviral therapy (cART) has been associated with a steep decrease in mortality and morbidity in HIV-1 infected children. New antiretroviral molecules and drug classes have been developed and the management of HIV-infected children has improved, but recent data on survival are limited. An observational retrospective study investigating changes in mortality and morbidity was conducted on 1,091 perinatally HIV-1 infected children enrolled in the Italian Register for HIV Infection in Children and followed-up from 2001 to 2018.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to define and evaluate the impact of persistently elevated prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels after salvage lymph node dissection (sLND) in patients with recurrent prostate cancer (PCa) who had previously undergone radical prostatectomy.
  • - Among the 579 patients analyzed from high-volume centers, a first postoperative PSA level of ≥0.3 ng/ml best predicted cancer-specific mortality (CSM), with 57% of patients showing PSA persistence, which was linked to higher risks of clinical recurrence and overall mortality.
  • - Early androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) following sLND enhanced survival benefits primarily for those patients with elevated PSA levels, indicating its potential importance in planning treatment for recurrent PCa.

Evidence-based approaches for the management of side-effects of adjuvant endocrine therapy in patients with breast cancer.

Lancet Oncol

July 2021

Department of Medical Oncology, UOC Clinica di Oncologia Medica, IRCCS Policlinico San Martino Hospital, University of Genoa, Genoa, Italy; Department of Internal Medicine and Medical Specialties, School of Medicine, University of Genoa, Genoa, Italy. Electronic address:

The growing availability of more effective therapies has contributed to an increased survival of patients with breast cancer. In hormone receptor-positive early disease, increased survival is strongly correlated with the use of adjuvant endocrine therapy, but this therapy can cause side-effects that have major consequences in terms of treatment adherence and patients' quality of life. In premenopausal breast cancer survivors, these side-effects might be even more prominent due to the abrupt suppression of oestrogen associated with the most intense endocrine therapies.
