Background: This observational study investigates the efficacy of combining local muscle vibration (LMV) therapy and kinesiotaping using the McConnell method (KMcCM) in patients with patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS). PFPS is a prevalent knee condition characterized by anterior or medial knee pain exacerbated by activities that overload the patellofemoral joint.

Objective: The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of LMV combined with KMcCM in reducing pain and improving function in PFPS patients.

Breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) is a rare form of non-Hodgkin T-cell lymphoma diagnosed in patients with a history of breast implants. Most patients develop a periprosthetic effusion at early stages of disease while less common presentations include a palpable mass, severe capsular contracture, lymphadenopathy, or cutaneous erythema. Due to the complex nature of this disease, a multidisciplinary approach is necessary for optimal management, particularly in locally advanced disease or inoperable patients.

Tertiary hyperparathyroidism is characterized by hypercalcemia resulting from autonomous parathyroid hormone production and usually occurs after a prolonged period of secondary hyperparathyroidism. This condition can be a complication of X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH), a rare genetic disease characterized by renal phosphate loss and consequent hypophosphatemia. Parathyroidectomy is considered the first-line therapy but surgical intervention can be complicated by hungry bone syndrome.

Objective: A pathogenetic role of CD8+ T lymphocytes in radiographic axial spondyloarthritis (r-axSpA) and other spondyloarthritis (SpA) is sustained by genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and by the expansion of public T cell clonotypes in the target tissues. This study investigates the migration of CD8+ T cells, along with their phenotype and functions in patients with r-axSpA and psoriatic arthritis (PsA).

Methods: Peripheral blood CD8+ and CD4+ T cells were isolated from r-axSpA (n= 128), PsA (n= 60) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA, n= 74) patients and healthy donors (HD, n= 79).

Interleukin-32 positive immune and resident cells in kidney samples from lupus patients: a pilot study.

Front Immunol

January 2025

Rheumatology Unit, Department of Clinical Internal, Anesthesiologic and Cardiovascular Sciences, "Sapienza" University of Rome, Rome, Italy.

Introduction: Lupus nephritis (LN), caused by immune complexes produced or deposited from the bloodstream, is one of the most severe features of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) leading to an increased morbidity and mortality. Toll like receptors (TLRs), such as TLR3, TLR7 and TLR9, may play a key role in its pathogenesis. Interleukin-32 (IL-32), a cytokine involved in both innate and adaptive immune responses, has been widely considered in autoimmune-inflammatory rheumatic diseases.

Impact of calreticulin mutations on treatment and survival outcomes in myelofibrosis during ruxolitinib therapy.

Ann Hematol

January 2025

Department of Engineering for Innovation Medicine, Section of Innovation Biomedicine, Hematology Area, University of Verona, Verona, Italy.

Calreticulin (CALR) mutations are detected in around 20% of patients with primary and post-essential thrombocythemia myelofibrosis (MF). Regardless of driver mutations, patients with splenomegaly and symptoms are generally treated with JAK2-inhibitors, most commonly ruxolitinib. Recently, new therapies specifically targeting the CALR mutant clone have entered clinical investigation.

Background: Clonal mature B-cell lymphoproliferative disorders (B-LPDs) are a heterogeneous group of neoplasia characterized by the proliferation of mature B lymphocytes in the peripheral blood, bone marrow and/or lymphoid tissues. B-LPDs classification into different subtypes and their diagnosis is based on a multiparametric approach. However, accurate diagnosis may be challenging, especially in cases of ambiguous interpretation.

Background: Metabolic syndrome represents a pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) risk factor. Metabolic alterations favor PDAC onset, which occurs early upon dysmetabolism. Pancreatic neoplastic lesions evolve within a dense desmoplastic stroma, consisting in abundant extracellular matrix settled by cancer associated fibroblasts (CAFs).

Introduction: Myelofibrosis (MF) is often characterized by a multifactorial anemia determined, in part, by bone marrow (BM) fibrosis, extramedullary erythropoiesis and splenomegaly. Ruxolitinib (RUX) is the first-in-class janus kinase 2 (JAK2) inhibitor approved for treatment of MF, proved to reduce spleen volume and decrease symptom burden. The red cell distribution width (RDW) is the measure of erythrocyte volume variability (anisocytosis).

Electronic address:

Introduction: Torque Teno Virus (TTV), an "orphan" virus with unclear pathology, has been associated with various diseases and immune dysfunctions. This study investigates the link between TTV viremia and clinical markers in patients with severe to very severe COPD undergoing respiratory rehabilitation.

Methods: We analyzed 102 elderly COPD patients, stratified by TTV viremia levels (< or ≥ 4 log10 copies/mL).

Objective: Bosentan (BOS) is approved for treating pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) and preventing digital ulcers (DU) in systemic sclerosis (SSc). Our study aimed to evaluate whether BOS prescribed for DU could reduce the incidence of PAH in a large SSc cohort from the SPRING registry.

Methods: Patients with SSc from the SPRING registry, meeting ACR/EULAR 2013 classification criteria with data on PAH onset, DU status, BOS exposure, and at least a one-year follow-up between 2015 and 2020, and no known PAH at baseline were included.

January 2025

Department of Neurology and Stroke Unit, ASST Grande Ospedale Metropolitano Niguarda, Piazza Ospedale Maggiore 3, Milan, 20162, Italy.

Background: Patients with ischemic stroke (IS) or TIA face an elevated cardiovascular risk, warranting intensive lipid-lowering therapy. Despite recommendations, adherence to guidelines is suboptimal, leading to frequent undertreatment. This study aims to evaluate the statin use after IS and TIA.

Objectives: The rationale of adoption opioid-sparing anesthesia (OSA) is to achieve perioperative analgesia with a minimal amount of opioids combined with nonopioid adjuvants during and after surgery, namely multimodal anesthesia. The OSA approach was originally developed to overcome the known complications of opioid-based anesthesia (OA), and the present scoping review (ScR) aims at providing clinical evidence of the safety and efficacy of OSA with respect to OA.

Methods: This ScR is mainly focused on studies presenting evidence on the safety and efficacy of OSA versus OA.
