The artificial intelligence (AI) systems used for diagnosing ophthalmic diseases have significantly progressed in recent years. The diagnosis of difficult eye conditions, such as cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, and retinopathy of prematurity, has become significantly less complicated as a result of the development of AI algorithms, which are currently on par with ophthalmologists in terms of their level of effectiveness. However, in the context of building AI systems for medical applications such as identifying eye diseases, addressing the challenges of safety and trustworthiness is paramount, including the emerging threat of adversarial attacks.

Although infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS CoV-2) does not appear to be as serious a threat to public health as it was in 2020-2021, the increased transmissibility of multiple Omicron descendants may constitute a continuous challenge for health care systems, and reliable detection of new variants is still imperative. This study evaluates the performance of three SARS-CoV-2 diagnostic tests: Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) Real Time Multiplex RT-PCR Kit (Liferiver); Vitassay qPCR SARS-CoV-2 (Vitaassay) and TaqPath COVID‑19 CE-IVD RT-PCR Kit (Thermo Fisher Scientific). The analytical sensitivity of the assays as well as their specificity were determined with the use of synthetic nucleic acid standards and clinical samples.

In this article, we unravel the problem of interpreting the density scaling exponent for the polyatomic molecules representing the real van der Waals liquids. Our studies show that the density scaling exponent is a weighted average of the exponents of the repulsive terms of all interatomic interactions that occur between molecules, where the potential energy of a given interaction represents its weight. It implies that potential energy is a key quantity required to calculate the density scaling exponent value for real molecules.

When random-strength components work as an interconnected parallel system, then its carrying capacity is random as well. In a case where such a multicomponent system is a subject of the stepwise-growing workload, some of its components fail and their loads are taken over by the ones that are intact. When the loading process is continued, the additional loads trigger consecutive failures that degrade the system, eventually leading to a complete failure.

In addition to modifying surface properties, self-assembled monolayers, SAMs, on nanoparticles can selectively incorporate small molecules from the surrounding solution. This selectivity has been used in the design of substrate-specific catalytic systems but its degree has not been quantified. This work uses catalytic centers embedded in on-nanoparticle hydrophobic SAMs to monitor and quantify the partitioning of molecules between the bulk solvent and these monolayers.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR), a leading cause of preventable blindness, is expected to remain a growing health burden worldwide. Screening to detect early sight-threatening lesions of DR can reduce the burden of vision loss; nevertheless, the process requires intensive manual labor and extensive resources to accommodate the increasing number of patients with diabetes. Artificial intelligence (AI) has been shown to be an effective tool which can potentially lower the burden of screening DR and vision loss.

Coastal lakes are subject to multiple stressors, among which land use, hydrological connectivity, and salinity have the greatest effect on their biodiversity. We studied the effects that various land cover types (CORINE) of coastal lake watersheds had on macrophyte diversity in ten coastal lakes along the southern Baltic coast as characterised by twelve phytocenotic indices: these being a number of communities, Shannon-Wiener diversity, evenness, and indices of taxonomic distinctiveness of plant communities: vegetation coverage; colonisation index; share of the phytolittoral area in the total lake area, as well as shares of nympheides, pondweeds, charophytes, marine, emerged and submerged communities in the total lake area. The effects were checked for three groups of lakes distinguished by differences in salinity-freshwater (F, 5), transitional (T, 4), and brackish (B, 1)-in which a total of 48 macrophyte communities were identified.

Friedreich’s ataxia (FRDA) is a rare autosomal recessive neurodegenerative disorder due to the homozygous pathological expansion of guanine-adenine-adenine (GAA) triplet repeats in the first intron of the FXN gene, which encodes for the mitochondrial protein frataxin. In the visual system, the typical manifestations are ocular motility abnormality, optic neuropathy, and retinopathy. Despite the evidence of ophthalmological impairment in FRDA patients, there is a lack of information about the morpho-functional condition of the retina and of the optic pathways in healthy heterozygous carriers of Friedreich’s ataxia (C-FRDA).
