Autoimmune bullous diseases represent a heterogenous group of disorders caused by autoantibodies against adhesion molecules; the location of the target protein determines the level of cleft formation. The spectrum of ocular lesions in autoimmune bullous diseases can range from mild symptoms to severe involvement with sight impairment and even, in some cases, blindness. In pemphigus vulgaris, the prevalence of ocular involvement has been reported to be between 7% and 26%.

Department of Dermatology, University of Connecticut School of Medicine, Farmington, Connecticut, USA; Department of Dermatology, University of Florida College of Medicine, Gainesville, Florida, USA. Electronic address:

Eyelid dermatitis may present with a variety of clinical findings including erythema, pruritus, and edema, and it has a wide differential. Allergic contact dermatitis due to allergen sources in personal care products, cosmetics, and fragrances is a leading cause of eyelid dermatitis and may be challenging to diagnose by clinical examination alone. Expanded patch testing, in addition to careful inspection of the surrounding skin for additional areas of involvement and clinical clues, remains an important tool in differentiating allergic contact dermatitis from other relevant etiologies of eyelid dermatitis including irritant contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis, and rosacea.

Cystic Parathyroid Adenomas as a Risk Factor for Severe Hypercalcemia.

J Clin Med

July 2023

Department of General, Vascular, Endocrine and Transplantation Surgery, Medical University of Warsaw, 02-097 Warsaw, Poland.

Article Synopsis
  • Parathyroid cystic adenomas (PCAs) are rare, making up 0.5-1% of parathyroid adenomas and contributing to 1-2% of primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) cases, prompting a study on their characteristics and associated risks.
  • The study compared 17 patients with PHPT and parathyroid cysts to 100 patients with hyperparathyroidism due to other causes, focusing on various lab measurements before and after surgery.
  • Findings indicated that patients with parathyroid cysts had significantly higher levels of PTH and calcium, suggesting they might be a unique risk factor for severe hypercalcemia, which can be potentially life-threatening.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD), an oxidative stress-linked neurodegenerative disease, leads to irreversible damage of the central retina and severe visual impairment. Advanced age and the long-standing influence of oxidative stress and oxidative cellular damage play crucial roles in AMD etiopathogenesis. Many authors emphasize the role of heterophagy, autophagy, and mitophagy in maintaining homeostasis in the retina.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the leading cause of dementia worldwide. Early detection is believed to be essential to disease management because it enables physicians to initiate treatment in patients with early-stage AD (early AD), with the possibility of stopping the disease or slowing disease progression, preserving function and ultimately reducing disease burden. The purpose of this study was to review prior research on the use of eye biomarkers and artificial intelligence (AI) for detecting AD and early AD.

The significance of mtDNA heteroplasmy in forensic and medical genetics has increased recently because massively parallel sequencing (MPS) technologies enable more accurate and precise detection of minority nucleotide variants. Recent reports have shown that detection of low-level substitutions may depend on library preparation or sequencing protocol, and can vary for different MPS platforms. The MiSeq (Illumina) and Ion S5 (Thermo Fisher Scientific) are mainly used for heteroplasmy detection, but no data are available regarding the iSeq 100, an Illumina platform of the smallest throughput.

Eye Center, The Second Affiliated Hospital School of Medicine Zhejiang University, Zhejiang Provincial Key Laboratory of Ophthalmology, Zhejiang Provincial Clinical Research Center for Eye Diseases, Zhejiang Provincial Engineering Institute on Eye Diseases, Hangzhou 310009, China.

The advent of artificial intelligence (AI), especially the state-of-the-art deep learning frameworks, has begun a silent revolution in all medical subfields, including ophthalmology. Due to their specific microvascular and neural structures, the eyes are anatomically associated with the rest of the body. Hence, ocular image-based AI technology may be a useful alternative or additional screening strategy for systemic diseases, especially where resources are scarce.

Purpose: With the aging population, the prevalence of presbyopia and the popularity of multifocal intraocular lenses is also growing worldwide. Unfortunately, in some cases, they are still associated with postoperative visual disturbances. Recent literature started to evaluate angle kappa- and angle alpha-derived metrics of chord mu and chord alpha as possible predictive values for visual outcomes after multifocal intraocular lens implantation but the published results are inconsistent between studies.

Dynamics and thermodynamics of molecular systems in the vicinity of the boundary between thermodynamically nonequilibrium glassy and metastable supercooled liquid states are still incompletely explored and their theoretical and simulation models are imperfect despite many previous efforts. Among them, the role of total system entropy, configurational entropy, and excess entropy in the temperature-pressure or temperature-density dependence of global molecular dynamics (MD) timescale relevant to the glass transition is an essential topic intensively studied for over half of a century. By exploiting a well-known simple ellipsoidal model recently successfully applied to simulate the supercooled liquid state and the glass transition, we gain a new insight into the different views on the relationship between entropy and relaxation dynamics of glass formers, showing the molecular grounds for the entropy scaling of global MD timescale.

Chiral fluorescent macrocycles consisting of two to four units of dimethyl 2,5-diaminoterephthalate can be readily synthesized in a one-pot manner from inexpensive building blocks. Depending on the concentration, either a paracyclophane-like dimer with closely stacked benzene rings or a triangular trimer is the main product of the reaction. The macrocycles exhibit fluorescence in solution as well as in the solid state with maxima that are red-shifted with decreasing size of the macrocyclic ring and are observed at wavelengths from 590 (tetramer in solution) to 700 nm (dimer in the solid state).
