January 2025

Key Laboratory of Colloid and Interface Chemistry, Ministry of Education, School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Shandong University, Jinan, 250100, China.

Nitrogen doping emerges as a potent approach to enhance the oxidase-like activity of carbon nanozymes. However, the unclear knowledge of the active nitrogen species within nitrogen-doped carbon nanozymes hinders the advancement of high-performance carbon nanozymes. Herein, a group of nitrogen-doped carbon (N/C) nanozymes with controllable nitrogen dopants are successfully synthesized via a dicyandiamide-assisted pyrolysis method.

The pharmacokinetics of renally eliminated antibiotics can be influenced by changes associated with renal function and development in a growing subject. Little is known about the effects of renal insufficiency on the pharmacokinetics of meropenem in pediatric subjects. The aim of this study was to develop a physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model of meropenem for pediatric patients that can be used to optimize meropenem dosing in pediatric patients with renal impairment (RI).

This work combines halogen and chalcogen bonding. Short, polarity directed C-X⋅⋅⋅Ch (X = Br or I, Ch = Se or Te) contacts were prepared by in situ low-temperature cocrystallization of liquid mixtures of neutral pentafluorohalogenobenzenes C6F5X and dimethyl chalco-genides Me2Ch. Solid-state structures of Me2Se and Me2Te were determined 150 and 125 years after their first description.

Automated proximal coronary artery calcium identification using artificial intelligence: advancing cardiovascular risk assessment.

Eur Heart J Cardiovasc Imaging

January 2025

Departments of Medicine (Division of Artificial Intelligence in Medicine), Biomedical Sciences and Imaging, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles, CA, USA.

Aims: Proximal coronary artery calcium (CAC) may improve prediction of major adverse cardiac events (MACE) beyond the CAC score, particularly in patients with low CAC burden. We investigated whether the proximal CAC can be detected on gated cardiac computer tomography (CT) and whether it provides prognostic significance with artificial intelligence (AI).

Methods And Results: A total of 2016 asymptomatic adults with baseline CAC CT scans from a single site were followed up for MACE for 14 years.

Carrot callus grown on a medium with increased nitrogen have reduced carotenoid accumulation, changed gene expression, high amount of vesicular plastids and altered cell wall composition. Carotenoid biosynthesis is vital for plant development and quality, yet its regulation under varying nutrient conditions remains unclear. To explore the effects of nitrogen (N) availability, we used carrot (Daucus carota L.

Sirtuin 7 (SIRT7), a member of the sirtuin family of NAD+-dependent deacetylases, plays a vital role in cancer, exhibiting context-dependent functions across various malignancies. Our study investigates the role of SIRT7 depletion in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) progression. In vitro and 3D organotypic models demonstrated that SIRT7 knock-out attenuates cancer cell viability, proliferation, and motility as well as induces downregulation of migration- and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-related gene expression.

Microplastics (MPs) form when plastic debris is released into the aquatic environment, where they decompose and have deleterious effects on aquatic life. This study aimed to examine the harmful impacts of polystyrene MPs (PS-MPs) on the growth, carcass composition, hematology, digestibility, histopathology, and mineral analysis of Catla catla (11.09 ± 0.

Rigorous numerical study of the density of periodic windows for the logistic map.

Chaos

January 2025

Department of Electrical Engineering, AGH University of Krakow, al. Mickiewicza 30, 30-059 Kraków, Poland.

Numerical study of periodic windows for the logistic map is carried out. Accurate rigorous bounds for periodic windows' end points are computed using interval arithmetic based tools. An efficient method to find the periodic window with the smallest period lying between two other periodic windows is proposed.

The paper analyzes the problem of entropy in the moments of transition from a normal economic situation (2015-2019) to the Pandemic period (2020-2021) and the period of Russia's attack on Ukraine (2022-2023). The research in the article is based on the analysis of electricity, oil, coal, and gas prices in 27 countries of the European Union and Norway. The daily data cover the period from January 1, 2015, to March 30, 2023, and were analyzed using two-dimensional sets of electricity and commodity prices.

Backgrounds/aims: Irreversible electroporation (IRE) may have a potential application as either a "back-up therapy" or for margin accentuation during trial dissection of locally advanced pancreatic cancer (LAPC). The aim of this report was to describe our experience with IRE in terms of its potential applications mentioned above.

Methods: A clinical policy to use IRE in LAPC patients undergoing exploratory surgery after neoadjuvant therapy (NAT) was initiated in 2017.

Superior colliculus controls the activity of the substantia nigra pars compacta and ventral tegmental area in an asymmetrical manner.

J Neurosci

January 2025

Department of Neurophysiology and Chronobiology, Institute of Zoology and Biomedical Research, Jagiellonian University, 9 Gronostajowa street, 30-387 Kraków, Poland.

Dopaminergic (DA) neurons of the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc) and ventral tegmental area (VTA) play a crucial role in controlling animals' orienting and approach behaviors toward relevant environmental stimuli. The ventral midbrain receives sensory input from the superior colliculus (SC), a tectal region processing information from contralateral receptive fields of various modalities. Given the significant influence of dopamine release imbalance in the left and right striatum on animals' movement direction, our study aimed to investigate the lateralization of the connection between the lateral SC and the midbrain DA system in male rats.

Background: IgG4-related cholangitis (IgG4-SC) and primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) are chronic fibro-inflammatory hepatobiliary conditions, with genetic, environmental, and immunologic risk factors, in which epigenetic alterations may provide insights into pathophysiology and novel biomarkers. This study is the first to assess methylation signatures in IgG4-SC.

Results: Whole blood DNA methylation profiling and genotyping was performed in 264 individuals; 47 with IgG4-SC, 65 with PSC, 64 with ulcerative colitis (UC), and 88 healthy controls.
