This study assessed the geogenic radon potential using PECAME, an innovative tool designed to simultaneously measure soil-gas permeability and CO concentration - two key parameters for understanding radon transport in soil. Comparative field studies using the RADON-JOK device in various geological settings in Japan and Poland demonstrate the effectiveness of PECAME. These studies reveal a strong correlation between PECAME and RADON-JOK, with an R value of 0.

Description of changes in chemical bonding along the pathways of chemical reactions by deformation of the molecular electrostatic potential.

J Mol Model

January 2025

Department of Theoretical Chemistry, Faculty of Chemistry, Jagiellonian University, Gronostajowa 2, 30-387, Krakow, Poland.

Context: The analysis of the changes in the electronic structure along intrinsic reaction coordinate (IRC) paths for model reactions: (i) ethylene + butadiene cycloaddition, (ii) prototype SN2 reaction Cl + CH3Cl, (iii) HCN/CNH isomerization assisted by water, (iv) CO + HF → C(O)HF was performed, in terms of changes in the deformation density (Δr) and the deformation of MEP (ΔMEP). The main goal was to further examine the utility of the ΔMEP as a descriptor of chemical bonding, and to compare the pictures resulting from Δr and ΔMEP. Both approaches clearly show that the main changes in the electronic structure occur in the TS region.

Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

Mayo Clinic, Jacksonville, FL, USA.

Background: Tauopathies are a group of neurodegenerative disorders which are characterized by the accumulation of abnormal tau protein in the brain. However, the mechanistic understanding of pathogenic tau formation and spread within the brain remains elusive. Astrocytes are major immune reactive cells in the brain and have been implicated in exacerbating tau pathology by releasing extracellular vesicles (AEVs) containing pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines upon activation.

X-ray diffraction (XRD) has evolved significantly since its inception, becoming a crucial tool for material structure characterization. Advancements in theory, experimental techniques, diffractometers and detection technology have led to the acquisition of highly accurate diffraction patterns, surpassing previous expectations. Extracting comprehensive information from these patterns necessitates different models due to the influence of both electron density and thermal motion on diffracted beam intensity.

We performed the first simulations of accretion onto the compact objects in the Reissner-Nordström (RN) space-time. The results obtained in general relativity are representative of those for spherically symmetric naked singularities and black holes in a number of modified gravity theories. A possible application of these calculations is to the active galactic nuclei with their powerful jets and outflows.

Luminescence of the CsZrCl under High Pressure.

Inorg Chem

January 2025

Institute of Physics, Polish Academy of Sciences, Al. Lotników 32/46, Warsaw 02-668, Poland.

The photoluminescence (PL) and Raman spectra of the CsZrCl crystal over a wide range of pressures were studied in this work for the first time. PL measurements were performed up to 10 GPa, while the Raman spectra were measured up to 20 GPa. The PL data revealed a linear blue shift of the emission maximum from about 2.

Effects of Sympathetic Denervation in Metabolism Regulation: A Novel Approach for the Treatment of MASLD?

Cardiol Rev

January 2025

From the First Department of Cardiology, School of Medicine, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Hippokration General Hospital, Athens, Greece.

Although metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), previously termed nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, has become the most common chronic liver disorder, its complex pathophysiology has not been fully elucidated up to date. A correlation between elevated sympathetic activation and MASLD has been highlighted in recent preclinical and clinical studies. Furthermore, increased sympathetic activity has been associated with the main mechanisms involved in MASLD, such as lipid accumulation in the liver, insulin resistance, and metabolic dysregulation, while it has been also correlated with the progression of MASLD, leading to liver fibrosis.

Crystal structure determination is a crucial aspect of almost every branch of the chemical sciences, bringing us closer to understanding crystallization, polymorphism, phase transitions, and the relationship between a structure and its physicochemical and functional properties. Unfortunately, many molecules notoriously crystallize as microcrystalline powders, providing a significant challenge in establishing their structures. In this work, we describe the crystal structure determination of three elusive polymorphs of the anti-inflammatory drug meloxicam (MLX) using three approaches, of which only one was successful for each crystal phase.

Three-quarters of the planet's land surface has been altered by humans, with consequences for animal ecology, movements and related ecosystem functioning. Species often occupy wide geographical ranges with contrasting human disturbance and environmental conditions, yet, limited data availability across species' ranges has constrained our understanding of how human pressure and resource availability jointly shape intraspecific variation of animal space use. Leveraging a unique dataset of 758 annual GPS movement trajectories from 375 brown bears (Ursus arctos) across the species' range in Europe, we investigated the effects of human pressure (i.
