This study investigated the effects of various titanium nanoparticles (TiONPs) on the structure, function, and trophic levels of the wheat rhizobiome. In contrast to the typically toxic effects of small nanoparticles (~10 nm), this research focused on molecular TiO and larger nanoparticles, as follows: medium-sized (68 nm, NPs1) and large (>100 nm, NPs2). The results demonstrated significant yet diverse impacts of different TiO forms on the rhizosphere microbiota.

Tick-bite hypersensitivity encompasses a range of clinical manifestations, from localized allergic reactions to systemic conditions like alpha-gal syndrome (AGS), an IgE-mediated allergy to galactose-α-1,3-galactose (α-Gal). This study investigated the clinical, molecular, immunological, and genetic features of two hypersensitivity cases. Two cases were analyzed: a 30-year-old woman with fixed drug reaction (FDR)-like hypersensitivity and a 10-year-old girl with AGS exhibiting borderline α-Gal-specific IgE.

The fungus Eriks () is the cause of leaf rust, one of the most damaging diseases, which significantly reduces common wheat yields. In -resistant adult plants, an APR-type resistance is observed, which protects the plant against multiple pathogen races and is distinguished by its persistence under production conditions. With a more complete understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying the function of APR genes, it will be possible to develop new strategies for resistance breeding in wheat.

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers diagnosed in both countries with high and low levels of socio-academic development. Routine, regular screening tests being introduced in an increasing number of countries make it possible to detect breast cancer at an early stage of development, as a result of which the trend in the incidence of metastatic breast cancer has been decreasing in recent years. The latest guidelines for the treatment of this tumor do not recommend axillary dissection, which limits the need for rapid assessment of the nodes during surgery.

Potential Use of Selected Natural Compounds with Anti-Biofilm Activity.

Int J Mol Sci

January 2025

Department of Microbiology, Collegium Medicum of L. Rydygier in Bydgoszcz, Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, 9 M. Skłodowskiej-Curie Street, 85-094 Bydgoszcz, Poland.

Antibiotic resistance in microorganisms is an escalating global concern, exacerbated by their formation of biofilms, which provide protection through an extracellular matrix and communication via quorum sensing, enhancing their resistance to treatment. This situation has driven the search for alternative approaches, particularly those using natural compounds. This study explores the potential of phytochemicals, such as quercetin, apigenin, arbutin, gallic acid, proanthocyanidins, and rutin, known for their antibacterial properties and ability to inhibit biofilm formation and disrupt mature biofilms.

Enhancing the Solubility and Dissolution of Apigenin: Solid Dispersions Approach.

Int J Mol Sci

January 2025

Department of Pharmacognosy and Biomaterials, Faculty of Pharmacy, Poznan University of Medical Sciences, 3 Rokietnicka St., 60-806 Poznan, Poland.

Apigenin (APG), a bioactive flavonoid with promising therapeutic potential, suffers from poor water solubility, which limits its bioavailability. To address this, solid dispersions of APG were prepared using ball milling with sodium alginate (SA), Pluronic F-68 (PLU68), Pluronic F-127 (PLU127), PVP K30, and PVP VA64 as polymeric excipients. These dispersions were screened for apparent solubility in water and buffers with pH 1.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) and neurodegenerative diseases/disturbances are worldwide health problems. The most common chronic conditions diagnosed in persons 60 years and older are type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and cognitive impairment. It was found that diabetes mellitus is a major risk for cognitive decline, dementia, Parkinson's disease (PD), Alzheimer's disease (AD), Huntington's disease (HD), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and other neurodegenerative disorders.

Non-Hypertensive Effects of Aldosterone.

Int J Mol Sci

January 2025

Department of Hypertension and Diabetology, Medical University of Gdańsk, 80-214 Gdańsk, Poland.

Aldosterone, the primary adrenal mineralocorticoid hormone, as an integral part of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS), is crucial in blood pressure regulation and maintaining sodium and potassium levels. It interacts with the mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) expressed in the kidney and promotes sodium and water reabsorption, thereby increasing blood pressure. However, MRs are additionally expressed in other cells, such as cardiomyocytes, the endothelium, neurons, or brown adipose tissue cells.

Predictive Value of Selected Plasma Biomarkers in the Assessment of the Occurrence and Severity of Coronary Artery Disease.

Int J Mol Sci

January 2025

Department of Invasive Cardiology, Independent Public Specialist Western Hospital John Paul II, Lazarski University, 05-825 Grodzisk Mazowiecki, Poland.

Despite significant advances in imaging modalities for diagnosing coronary artery disease (CAD), there remains a need for novel diagnostic approaches with high predictive values and fewer limitations. Circulating biomarkers, including cytokines such as interleukin-6 (IL-6) and interleukin-8 (IL-8), cell adhesion molecules such as soluble vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (sVCAM-1), peptides secreted by endothelial cells such as endothelin-1 (ET-1), and enzymes involved in extracellular matrix remodeling such as a disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin motifs-1 (ADAMTS-1) offer a promising alternative. This study aimed to evaluate the correlation between the plasma levels of selected biomarkers and the presence and severity of CAD.

Pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PXS) is an age-related fibrillopathy where fibrillar exfoliation material accumulates and deposits in ocular and extra-ocular tissue. Within the eye, this substance accumulates on the ocular surface and in the anterior segment of the eye, impacting ocular structures such as the conjunctiva, Tenon's capsule, sclera, cornea, iris, ciliary body, trabecular meshwork, and lens. This review aims to collate the current literature on how each anatomical part of the eye is affected by PXS, with a strong focus on molecular changes.

Mastocytosis is a rare neoplastic disease of the bone marrow. Common symptoms like urticaria, diarrhea, bronchspasm and flushing are caused by mast cell degranulation and are mostly based on mast cell mediator release and Th2 type inflammation that occurs frequently in these patients. Psychological disorders are more prevalent in patients with systemic mastocytosis, though little is known about the mechanism behind this.
