Objective: Saliva is increasingly being recognized as a convenient and informative reservoir of proteins that could serve as indicators of various diseases. As the literature remains taciturn with regard to saliva collection methods in rodents, our objective was to provide the protocol for a comprehensive quantitative proteomic assessment of stimulated rat saliva.
Design: We applied the next-generation proteomic methodology (directDIA) to compare qualitatively and quantitatively stimulated rat saliva specimens obtained from pilocarpine alone and pilocarpine in combination with isoprenaline.

Low basal metabolic rate (BMR) is a risk factor for obesity, whereas elevation of non-shivering thermogenesis (NST) is a promising means to combat obesity. Because heat generated by NST covers thermogenic needs not fulfilled by BMR, one can expect the presence of a negative relationship between both parameters. Understanding of the mechanisms underlying this relationship is therefore important for interpretation of the results of translational experiments and the development of anti-obesity treatments.

This article examines the perspectives of Africans living in Poland on infertility and associated cultural stigmatisation. By situating the discussion within the broader context of African cultural frameworks and the sociocultural dynamics of contemporary Poland, the study investigates how members of this community reconcile their cultural identities with their lived experiences in a European setting. Supported by a review of the literature on gender roles, childbearing and reproductive health issues on the African continent, this study provided insight into the small and diverse African diaspora in Poland.

Aggregates of two mouse embryos produce viable offspring of normal size, indicating that there are mechanisms in the embryo that can downregulate their size to the size of the corresponding normal (single) embryos. Very little is known about the mechanisms controlling compensation for increased preimplantation size. Also, it is still elusive when exactly during development chimeric embryos regulate their size.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) reactivation is a recognized complication of long-term immunosuppressive or cytotoxic therapy, typically occurring during immunosuppression or within a few months after treatment. To mitigate this risk, hepatological societies recommend the use of nucleos(t)ide analogues (NA) for HBV reactivation prophylaxis, along with post-treatment monitoring; though, these recommendations are not universally consistent across different guidelines. We present a case of late HBV reactivation in a 76-year-old male with occult HBV infection who received rituximab-based therapy for chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

Androgen insensitivity syndrome (AIS) is an X-linked genetic disorder caused by mutations in the androgen receptor gene (), leading to impaired androgen signaling and resulting in varying degrees of undermasculinization in individuals with a 46,XY karyotype. This study aimed to expand the molecular landscape of AIS by identifying and characterizing pathogenic variants in the gene via next-generation sequencing (NGS). Molecular diagnostics revealed eight distinct variants within the gene, two of which had not been previously described.

The use of social media by athletes can support them in difficult moments, but it can also become a source of negative emotions and psychological distress. This perspective critically examines psychoanalytic psychotherapy as a method for restoring athletes' psychological well-being after experiencing negative effects from social media use. The paper characterizes the key elements of psychoanalytic psychotherapy relevant to athletes, discusses the role of the psychoanalytic psychotherapist in working with athletes and describes the specifics of the psychoanalytic therapeutic process in this context.

The skin of the Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis) is covered by a form of armour formed mainly of scales, which often co-occur with osteoderms. Scales are keratinized, non-mineralized structures in the uppermost layer of the epidermis that are in contact with each other to form a system in which individual scales are isolated from each other by a softer skin fold zone. In the Varanus, the surface of the scales is flat and smooth (thoracic limb, abdomen, and tail areas), domed and smooth (head area) or domed with conical ornamentation (dorsal surface, pelvic limb-dorsal surface areas).

In freshwater lakes and rivers, cyanobacteria belonging to the family Leptolyngbyaceae bore > 1 mm deep into limestone pebbles by dissolving carbonate at the tip of their 3-8 μm-thick filaments. The abundance of these borings decreases downward while it is so high at the rock surface that micrometric debris is formed. Moreover, the disintegrated material on the pebbles' surface can be easily removed, for instance, when pebbles are grinding against each other due to wave or current action or when insect larvae settle and scratch loosened grains from the surface while constructing their cases.
