In multiple neurodegenerative diseases, including age-related macular degeneration, retinitis pigmentosa, and macular telangiectasia type 2 (MacTel), retinal pigment epithelial (RPE)-cells proliferate and migrate into the neuroretina, forming intraretinal pigment plaques. Though these pigmentary changes are hallmarks of disease progression, it is unknown if their presence is protective or detrimental. Here, we first evaluated the impact of pigment plaques on vascular changes and disease progression in MacTel.

The aim of this study was to determine the validity, reliability, and sensitivity of a new linear position transducer (LPT) device (RepOne) to a previously validated LPT (Tendo) during the barbell back squat and bench press exercises. Fourteen recreationally resistancetrained individuals (7 males and 7 females) performed three repetitions for the back squat and bench press at loads ranging from 30-90% 1RM. Both devices recorded average (ACV) and peak (PCV) concentric velocities concurrently for every repetition at each load.

Anatomy Learning Institute, College of Health Sciences, Point Loma Nazarene University, San Diego, California, USA.

The intersection of anatomy and spirituality offers a profound exploration into how the physical and spiritual aspects of our being interrelate, enhancing our understanding of wholeness. These domains are often seen as distinct, with anatomy rooted in the tangible study of the human body, while spirituality is considered intangible and deeply personal. However, as our understanding of both fields has evolved, a more integrative approach is emerging, recognizing that the physical and spiritual are not separate but interconnected aspects of human experience.

Montane cloud forests are highly threatened ecosystems that are vulnerable to climate change. These complex habitats harbor many species that suffer the negative consequences of this global phenomenon, such as shifts in their distribution and habitat use. The Central American clouded oncilla (Leopardus pardinoides oncilla) is the smallest and most endangered wild cat in Mesoamerica and is primarily reported in cloud forests throughout its distribution.

The Human papillomavirus (HPV) causes tumors in part by hijacking the host cell cycle and forcing uncontrolled cellular division. While there are >200 genotypes of HPV, 15 are classified as high-risk and have been shown to transform infected cells and contribute to tumor formation. The remaining low-risk genotypes are not considered oncogenic and result in benign skin lesions.

It is the position of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and the American Council on Exercise that nutrition and physical activity interventions delivered by qualified nutrition and exercise practitioners, within their scopes of practice, can improve lifestyle behaviors and cardiometabolic risk factors for adults in the general population. Effective interventions require client-centered, evidence-based care provided by skilled practitioners using inclusive, dynamic methods, and collaboration with an interprofessional team, as appropriate. Increased access to evidence-based nutrition and physical activity interventions is necessary to improve public health and should be a target for policymakers, health care systems, and practitioners.

Red blood cells (RBCs) carry oxygen and make up 40-45% of blood by volume in large vessels down to 10% or less in smaller capillaries. Because of their finite size and large volume fraction, they are heterogeneously distributed throughout the body. This is partially because RBCs are distributed or partitioned nonuniformly at diverging vessel bifurcations where blood flows from one vessel into two.

Supporting Sustainable Health Behavior Change: The Whole is Greater Than the Sum of Its Parts.

Mayo Clin Proc Innov Qual Outcomes

June 2024

Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Vanderbilt Health Coaching, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, TN.

Behavior change is the foundation for effective lifestyle prescriptions, yet such change is individualized, nonlinear and typically requires ongoing support. Health and wellness coaching (HWC) is a behavior change intervention with rapidly accruing evidence of positive impact on health behaviors such as exercise, nutrition and stress management. Furthermore, HWC enhances prevention and mitigates exacerbation of chronic lifestyle diseases, at least in the short-term (up to 6 months post intervention).

Article Synopsis
  • In 1992, the programmed grooming model was proposed by Ben and Lynette Hart, suggesting that a central control mechanism triggers grooming in African antelope to remove ectoparasites before they can feed on blood.
  • Over 30 years, 26 studies have supported this model in ungulate hosts and ticks, with additional research examining its predictions in various other animals and ectoparasites.
  • A review of these studies emphasized the need for consistent methodologies, tailored predictions based on specific host and parasite biology, and further research to understand the importance of grooming for wild animal health against parasites.

Given there are no known studies which have examined multiple lower extremity muscles between different ankle positions during bridging activities, the objective was to assess how employing two different ankle positions (PF versus DF) while performing five common bridging exercises (three bipedal and two unipedal) used in rehabilitation and athletic performance affect core and select lower extremity muscle EMG recruitment. Twenty healthy subjects performed a 5 s isometric hold during five two- and one-leg bridge exercises: (1) on right leg with left knee to chest (1LB-LFlex); (2) on right leg with left knee extended (1LB-LExt); (3) standard two-leg bridge (2LB); (4) two-leg bridge with resistance band around knees (2LB-ABD); and (5) two-leg bridge with ball between knees (2LB-ADD). Surface electromyographic (EMG) data were collected using a Noraxon Telemyo Direct Transmission System from fourteen muscles: (1) three superficial quadriceps (VM, VL, and RF); (2) three hip abductors (TFL, GMED, and GMAX); (3) medial hamstrings (ST) and lateral hamstrings (BF); (4) hip adductors (ADD); (5) erector spinae (ES); (6) latissimus dorsi (LATS); (7) upper rectus abdominis (RA); and (8) external oblique (EO) and internal oblique (IO).

Investigating the status of whole-body donation across the United States of America.

Anat Sci Educ

April 2024

Anatomy Learning Institute, College of Health Sciences, Point Loma Nazarene University, San Diego, California, USA.

Dissection of human body donors is a valuable part of anatomical education, research, and clinical training. In the United States, deceased human bodies are predominantly sourced through whole-body donation programs (BDPs) housed by academic institutions. Due to the lack of information regarding BDPs, the aim of this study was to gather information from US BDPs through a survey to better understand the donation process and standard operating procedures of these programs.

The fisheries history of the Giant Sea Bass, (Telostei: Polyprionidae), is closely linked to its spatial ecology. Its overharvest is directly associated with formation of spatially distinct spawning aggregations during summer, while its subsequent recovery is hypothesized to be the result of spatially explicit gear restrictions. Understanding the spatial ecology of Giant Sea Bass is a key part of efforts to assess contemporary threats such as commercial harvest and incidental catch by recreational fisheries.
