Alongside the Chicxulub meteorite impact, Deccan volcanism is considered a primary trigger for the Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-Pg) mass extinction. Models suggest that volcanic outgassing of carbon and sulfur-potent environmental stressors-drove global temperature change, but the relative timing, duration, and magnitude of such change remains uncertain. Here, we use the organic paleothermometer MBT' and the carbon-isotope composition of two K-Pg-spanning lignites from the western Unites States, to test models of volcanogenic air temperature change in the ~100 kyr before the mass extinction.

Soil erosion is a world-wide issue driven by land management and climate change. Research has focussed on soil loss rates from agricultural land. However, the loss of trace elements essential for soil and plant health, or potentially toxic elements that occur as impurities in fertilisers and manures, is poorly understood.

The Role of CRISPR/Cas9 in Revolutionizing Duchenne's Muscular Dystrophy Treatment: Opportunities and Obstacles.

Duchenne's muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a severe X-linked disorder characterized by progressive muscle degeneration, leading to loss of ambulation, respiratory failure, and premature death. It affects approximately 1 in 3,500 live male births and is caused by mutations in the dystrophin gene, which impairs muscle fiber stability. Current treatments are limited to managing symptoms and slowing disease progression, with no curative therapies available.

Introduction: Post-intubation tracheal rupture (PiTR) is an extremely uncommon disorder. Pneumothorax, pneumomediastinum, hemorrhage, cutaneous emphysema, and sepsis are common clinical presentations that eventually result in organ failure and mediastinitis. Endoscopy and computed tomography (CT) are considered the gold standards for assessment and diagnosis.

An exploration of intensive care unit patents' experiences of the Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination (ACE-III) as a screening tool for cognitive functioning at different points in recovery from critical illness.

Being critically ill can result in cognitive change. Cognitive functioning should be screened at different points in the care pathway, and it is important to understand patient's experience of this process. A service evaluation examined fifteen in-patients' and eleven outpatients' experiences of completing the Addenbrookes Cognitive Examination-III (ACE-III) using thematic analysis.

'Hidden' work and lost opportunities: nursing research and impact case studies submitted to REF2021.

Aims: (1) Identify and characterise the nursing contribution to impact case studies submitted to Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021 across all Units of Assessment and compare this to those submitted to REF 2014; (2) Identify and characterise those impact case studies of relevance to nursing that did not include a nurse in the research team; (3) Compare the characteristics of impact case studies identified in Aim 2 with those that did include a nurse in the research team.

Methods: We searched the REF2021 impact database with the term nurs* then sorted case studies into categories representing the involvement of nurses on the research team.

Quantifying and reducing the cost of tagging: combining computational fluid dynamics and diving experiments to reduce impact from animal-borne tags.

Animal-borne instruments are essential research tools for ecologists and physiologists. An increasing number of studies have shown impacts of carrying a tag on behaviour and energetics, which can have implications for animal welfare and data validity. Such impacts are a result of the additional mass and/or drag loads, with the latter requiring empirical measurements or computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to estimate.

Beyond the Bite: Exploring Mental Health of Dental Faculty in Pakistan- a multi-institutional study.

Introduction: Mental health issues are being reported increasingly amongst healthcare staff and students globally. The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of common mental health issues amongst dental faculty members at multiple institutions in Pakistan.

Methods: Following approval from the institutional ethics review board, dental faculty members at 14 dental institutions were invited to participate in an online survey based on globally validated scales for mental health problems including the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), and the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS-21).

Evaluation of health recommender systems: a scoping review protocol.

Background: People increasingly rely on online health information for their health-related decision-making. Given the overwhelming amount of information available, the risk of misinformation is high. Health recommender systems, which recommend personalised health-related information or interventions using intelligent algorithms, have the potential to address this issue.

Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography is a complex procedure with a significant risk of severe consequences. We herein report a 56-year-old Middle Eastern female who was diagnosed with acute ascending cholangitis. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography was performed with gallstone absorption and stent implanting.

Heat hardening improves thermal tolerance in abalone, without the trade-offs associated with chronic heat exposure.

Marine animals are challenged by chronically raised temperatures alongside an increased frequency of discrete, severe warming events. Exposure to repeated heat shocks could result in heat hardening, where sub-lethal exposure to thermal stress temporarily enhances thermotolerance, and may be an important mechanism by which marine species will cope with future thermal challenges. However, we have relatively little understanding of the effects of heat hardening in comparison to chronic exposure to elevated temperatures.

Association between Periodontitis and Hypertension among Adult Population in Rwanda.

: Mortality due to various non-communicable diseases, including hypertension, is increasing globally. Studies have reported that periodontitis, a chronic inflammatory disorder caused by oral pathogens, is a potential risk factor for hypertension. These pathogens can invade arterial walls, leading to vascular inflammation and endothelial dysfunction, which then increases the likelihood of developing hypertension.

Leading through the COVID-19 pandemic: Experiences of UK Executive Nurse Directors.

Aim: To explore the challenges experienced by Executive Nurse Directors during the COVID-19 pandemic, and to inform future nursing leadership strategies.

Design: A qualitative research project involving interviews with 21 Executive Nurse Directors from England and Wales.

Psychometric validation of a patient-reported experience measure for older adults attending the emergency department: the PREM-ED 65 study.

Introduction: Optimising emergency department (ED) patient experience is vital to ensure care quality. However, there are few validated instruments to measure the experiences of specific patient groups, including older adults. We previously developed a draft 82-item Patient Reported Experience Measure (PREM-ED 65) for adults ≥65 attending the ED.

Salivary biomarkers: The early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease.

The precise identification of Alzheimer's disease and other prevalent neurodegenerative diseases remains a difficult issue that requires the development of early detection of the disease and inexpensive biomarkers that can replace the present cerebrospinal fluid and imaging biomarkers. Blood biomarkers, such as amyloid and neurofilament light, have been emphasized as an important and practical tool in a testing or examination procedure thanks to advancements in ultra-sensitive detection techniques. Although saliva is not currently being researched for neurodegenerative diseases, it is an important source of biomarkers that can be used for the identification of diseases and has some advantages over other biofluids.

Recent Progress in the Application of Tau Protein Biosensors for Diagnosis of Neurodegenerative Diseases.

The microtubule-associated Tau protein is found in the central nervous system (CNS) in six major isoforms. Neurodegenerative diseases have been linked to post-translational changes of Tau, most notably phosphorylation. Tau protein's molecular diversity is highly helpful in the identification of neurodegenerative illnesses.
