The objective of this study is to investigate the efficacy of the semantic segmentation model in predicting cardiothoracic ratio (CTR) and heart enlargement and compare its consistency with the reference standard. A total of 650 consecutive chest radiographs from our center and 756 public datasets were retrospectively included to develop a segmentation model. Three semantic segmentation models were used to segment the heart and lungs.

Rationale: Pancreaticopleural fistula (PPF) is an infrequent etiology of pleural effusion, characterized by nonspecific thoracic symptoms, which often leads to misdiagnosis and subsequent severe complications. Consequently, early diagnosis is crucial for effective management and the prevention of adverse outcomes. This report presents a rare case of PPF causing bilateral pleural effusions, aiming to enhance clinical recognition of this condition.

The management of persistent malignant pleural effusion (MPE) or uremic pleural effusions requires the removal of pleural fluid and the prevention of recurrence through pleurodesis. Pleurodesis involves injecting a sclerosing agent into the pleura to encourage adhesion between the two layers, ultimately obliterating the pleural space. Povidone-iodine is a potential pleurodesing agent.

The goal of the American Association of Bronchology and Interventional Pulmonology Essential Knowledge in Interventional Pulmonology Series is to provide clinicians with concise, up-to-date reviews of important topics in the field of interventional pulmonology. This 3-year alternating rotation of primary topics will start with a focus on selected topics in malignant pleural disease. In this article, we update the reader on malignant pleural effusion in 3 parts: part 1-diagnosis, focusing on imaging and fluid biomarkers; part 2-management, with review of multimodal approaches, cost considerations, and evolving targeted therapies; and part 3-pleural mesothelioma.

Background: Extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH) is usually seen in the reticuloendothelial system such as the spleen and liver; however, there have been rare case reports when EMH is seen in serous fluids (SFs). The aim of this study included analyzing the cytomorphological features of EMH in SFs in correlation with various clinicopathologic parameters and recognizing potential diagnostic pitfalls as well as their prognostic significance.
Methods: Clinicopathologic parameters and radiologic and pathologic information from the patients with a cytologic diagnosis of EMH were evaluated with cytology slides.

Pseudo-pseudo Meigs' syndrome (PPMS), also known as Tjalma syndrome, is an exceptionally rare condition marked by pleural effusion, ascites, and elevated CA-125 levels, usually in the context of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) without any associated ovarian tumors. We report the case of a 40-year-old woman who presented with a four-month history of fatigue, nausea, weight loss, abdominal pain, and pleural effusion. Initial diagnostic workup revealed ascites, elevated CA-125 levels, and pleural effusions, with no evidence of malignancy.

Open surgical treatment of idiopathic chylothorax via thoracic duct ligation and pericardiectomy requires a lengthy procedure with two thoracotomy incisions. The objectives of this report were to describe an approach for thoracic duct ligation and pericardiectomy via a single thoracotomy at the left fourth intercostal space and to describe the clinical outcome in two dogs with idiopathic chylothorax. Dogs were prospectively enrolled in a pilot study to evaluate the clinical efficacy of thoracic duct ligation at the left fourth intercostal space, combined with subphrenic pericardiectomy performed through the same incision.

Introduction: Macrolide-unresponsive pneumonia (MUMPP) cases have been rapidly increasing. The primary reason for this increased incidence is the pathogen's acquisition of resistance through mutations in 23S rRNA genes. Due to the unfeasibility of testing for macrolide susceptibility at the time of admission, this study aimed to assess the clinical features of pediatric MUMPP, using insights from laboratory tests and patterns of chest radiographic resolution.
