Three-dimensional (3D) organotypic skin in vitro has attracted increasing attention for drug development, cosmetics evaluation, and even clinical applications. However, the severe contraction of these models restricts their application, especially in the analyses based on barrier functions such as percutaneous penetration. For the full-thickness skin equivalents, the mechanical properties of the dermis scaffold plays an important role in the contraction resistance.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on a new surgical technique for correcting "flat ear," a subtype of microtia characterized by underdeveloped ear structures, using autologous ear cartilage instead of traditional costal cartilage to reduce surgery risks.
  • Involving 19 patients with an average age of 10.67 years, the results showed significant improvements in ear dimensions and a restoration of conchal bowl depth, demonstrating the effectiveness of the new technique.
  • Patient satisfaction scores increased dramatically post-surgery, indicating the technique not only improves ear appearance but also enhances overall patient contentment, offering a less invasive treatment option for auricular deformities.

Backgrounds: For patients with concha-type microtia, surgical intervention and the degree of deformity may affect the growth rate of the auricular cartilage, which is different at different ages. This study aimed to explore the auricular growth potential of patients with concha-type microtia at different ages after auricular cartilage stretching surgery.

Methods: A total of 66 patients with unilateral grade II and III concha-type microtia were involved in this prospective cohort study.

Concentrated Deoiled Fat: A Novel Method of Fat Processing to Improve Fat Graft Survival-A Basic Research.

Aesthetic Plast Surg

September 2024

Department of Plastic Surgery, Army Medical University Xinqiao Hospital, No.83, Xinqiao Main Street, Shapingba District, Chongqing, 400000, China.

Background: Oil compromises graft outcomes via inflammation, which accounts for the unpredictability of volume retention rates as low as 20%. Existing techniques for oil removal are relatively inefficient. In this study, a novel approach was taken to prepare concentrated deoiled fat (CDF) by utilizing flocculation and centrifugation to remove the oil.

The use of autologous costal cartilage in augmentation rhinoplasty is well-established. However, scenarios where costal cartilage is insufficient or patients are unwilling to undergo additional cartilage harvesting present a challenge. This study introduces a composite dorsal onlay implant, combining silicone and costal cartilage, as an effective solution.

Background: Extracellular vesicles (EVs) derived from human adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hADSCs) have shown great therapeutic potential in plastic and reconstructive surgery. However, the limited production and functional molecule loading of EVs hinder their clinical translation. Traditional two-dimensional culture of hADSCs results in stemness loss and cellular senescence, which is unfavorable for the production and functional molecule loading of EVs.

Clinical Application of Botulinum Toxin A on Nasal Reconstruction with Expanded Forehead Flap for Asian Patients.

Aesthetic Plast Surg

October 2024

Center of Rhinoplasty, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College, Plastic Surgery Hospital and Institute, No. 33 Badachu Road, Shijingshan District, Beijing, 100144, China.

Background: Because of its unique advantages, frontal expansion has become a common tool for Asian nasal reconstruction, but it has the limitations of prolonging the duration and pain in the expansion area. Based on the fact that the denervation effect of botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A) has been widely used in the reconstruction of superficial organs, we hypothesized that BTX-A would shorten the length of nasal reconstruction sequence and alleviate the discomfort of patients.

Methods: A comparative retrospective study was conducted of consecutive patients underwent sequential treatment of nasal reconstruction between June 2010 and July 2012.

Due to the prevalence of anterior maxilla dysplasia in Asian population, paranasal concavity is a common accompaniment to low nose, but its impact on facial harmonization is often underestimated. A retrospective comparative study was conducted on patients diagnosed as low nose with paranasal concavity between June 2017 and June 2021, with a total of 56 patients followed up successfully. The control and observation groups were established according to whether the paranasal augmentation was performed.

Background: Autologous fat transplantation, widely used in cosmetic and reparative surgery for volumetric enhancements, faces challenges with its inconsistent long-term survival rates. The technique's efficacy, crucial for its development, is hindered by unpredictable outcomes. Enriching fat grafts with adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) shows promise in improving survival efficiency.

Efforts are made to enhance the inherent potential of extracellular vesicles (EVs) by utilizing 3D culture platforms and engineered strategies for functional cargo-loading. Three distinct types of adipose mesenchymal stem cells-derived EVs (ADSCs-EVs) are successfully isolated utilizing 3D culture platforms consisting of porous gelatin methacryloyl (PG), PG combined with sericin methacryloyl (PG/SerMA), or PG combined with chondroitin sulfate methacryloyl (PG/ChSMA). These correspond to PG-EVs, PG/SerMA-EVs, and PG/ChSMA-EVs, respectively.

The relay graft, a tailored supplement between the nasal hump and established tip in East Asian rhinoplasty.

J Plast Reconstr Aesthet Surg

April 2024

Department of Plastic Surgery, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences & Peking Union Medical College, Plastic Surgery Hospital and Institute, No. 33 Badachu Rd., Shijingshan District, Beijing 100144, PR China. Electronic address:

Background: In East Asian individuals, the nasal bone already has sufficient height for an ideal dorsal profile, but the tip requires enhancement for a desired projection. Consequently, the gap between the intrinsic bony structure and the established nasal tip requires appropriate management. The options are either to reduce the keystone region to create a smooth bed for a conventional dorsal onlay graft or to preserve the original osseocartilaginous structures and then customize a supplementary graft.

Electronic address:

Neonicotinoids are broad-spectrum and highly effective insecticides that work by affecting neural activity in insects. Neonicotinoids are systemic pesticides that are absorbed by plants, transported, and accumulated in plant tissues, including nectar and pollen. Currently, there is a lack of a comprehensive assessment of the level of neonicotinoid contamination and the associated health risks to non-targeted organisms in commercial honey and pollen produced in China.
