Article Synopsis
  • Alicyclobacillus bacteria are problematic in the beverage industry due to their ability to survive typical pasteurization methods, leading to quality issues related to odor and taste, while their health effects on humans are not clearly defined.
  • An experimental study was conducted using cell cultures and rodent models to assess the safety of various strains of Alicyclobacillus, focusing on their impacts on intestinal cells and potential cytotoxicity.
  • Results indicated that Alicyclobacillus spp. showed negligible cytotoxicity and minimal safety concerns, suggesting they are biocompatible in the tested models.

Article Synopsis
  • Fourier harmonic analysis (FHA) is used to identify small changes in sperm nuclear shape that may signal reduced fertility, particularly in Nili-Ravi buffalo bulls.
  • The study involved two experiments: standardizing the FHA method and developing a fertility prediction model by analyzing sperm samples from bulls of varying fertility levels through digital image analysis.
  • Results indicated significant differences in harmonic amplitudes between live and dead sperm, suggesting that nuclear shape parameters could be effective indicators for predicting fertility in buffalo bulls.

Article Synopsis
  • Progressive myoclonic epilepsies (PMEs) are neurodegenerative disorders common in adolescents, leading to symptoms like worsening myoclonus, ataxia, cognitive decline, and dementia.
  • The study explored the genetic basis of PMEs in three Pakistani families, identifying specific variants in the CLN6 gene through Whole Exome Sequencing and validation techniques.
  • Findings show that CLN6 mutations can expand the known phenotypic spectrum of PMEs and highlight the variability in symptoms even among individuals with the same genetic mutation.

Heavy metal toxicity in environment has been an increasing issue for last decades, though now the attention has diverted to presence of heavy metals in cosmetic products. The aim of this study was to determine the concentration of selected heavy metals in cosmetic products (lipsticks and foundations) using ICP-OES. Health risk assessment was done by using hazard quotient (HQ) and hazard index (HI).

Article Synopsis
  • - Systematic assessments of species extinction risk are crucial for effective conservation, and the second Global Amphibian Assessment evaluated over 8,000 species for their threat levels.
  • - Amphibians are the most at-risk vertebrates, with 40.7% of species globally threatened, and their status has worsened since previous assessments, especially in salamanders and the Neotropics.
  • - The major threats contributing to declining amphibian populations include disease, habitat loss, and increasing impacts from climate change, highlighting the urgent need for more conservation funding and initiatives to reverse negative trends.

August 2023

Department of Pharmacology, Center for Research and Advanced Studies, National Polytechnic Institute, Mexico City, Mexico.

The present study was the first comprehensive investigation of genetic mutation and expression levels of the p53 signaling genes in cutaneous melanoma through various genetic databases providing large datasets. The mutational landscape of p53 and its signaling genes was higher than expected, with followed by being the most mutated gene in cutaneous melanoma. Furthermore, the expression analysis showed , , , and were overexpressed, while and were under-expressed in cutaneous melanoma.

Insects are incredibly successful and diverse organisms, but they also pose a significant threat to agricultural crops, causing potential losses of up to US$470 billion. Among these pests, Plutella xylostella (Linnaeus), a devastating insect that attacks cruciferous vegetables, alone results in monetary losses of around US$4-5 billion worldwide. While insecticides have effectively protected plants under field conditions, their use comes with various environmental and mammalian hazards.

This study used a dataset of 30 years (1990-2020) of daily observations from 24 meteorological stations in the northern highlands of Pakistan to assess trends in extreme precipitation indices. The RClimDex model was used to analyze the indices, and the Modified Mann-Kendal test and the Theil-Sen slope estimator were applied to determine trends and slopes, respectively. The results showed a significant decrease in total annual precipitation amount (PRCPTOT) with varying rates of negative trend from -4.

Spinocerebellar disorders are a vast group of rare neurogenetic conditions, generally characterized by overlapping clinical symptoms including progressive cerebellar ataxia, spastic paraparesis, cognitive deficiencies, skeletal/muscular and ocular abnormalities. The objective of the present study is to identify the underlying genetic causes of the rare spinocerebellar disorders in the Pakistani population. Herein, nine consanguineous families presenting different spinocerebellar phenotypes have been investigated using whole exome sequencing.

Chronic subdural hematomas are typically observed in elderly patients receiving antithrombotic and/or anticoagulant therapy. In contrast, acute subdural and extradural hematomas are often observed in young people with traumatic brain injury. The coexistence of ipsilateral chronic subdural and extradural hematomas is rare.

The lack of information regarding biodiversity status hampers designing and implementing conservation strategies and achieving future targets. Northern Pakistan consists of a unique ecoregion mosaic which supports a myriad of environmental niches for anuran diversity in comparison to the deserts and xeric shrublands throughout the rest of the country. In order to study the niche suitability, species overlap and distribution patterns in Pakistan, we collected observational data for nine anuran species across several distinct ecoregions by surveying 87 randomly selected locations from 2016 to 2018 in Rawalpindi District and Islamabad Capital Territory.

Climate Change and Human Activities, the Significant Dynamic Drivers of Himalayan Goral Distribution ().

Biology (Basel)

April 2023

Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz International Prize for Water Chair, Prince Sultan Institute for Environmental, Water and Desert Research, King Saud University, Riyadh 11451, Saudi Arabia.

The distribution of large ungulates is more often negatively impacted by the changing climate, especially global warming and species with limited distributional zones. While developing conservation action plans for the threatened species such as the Himalayan goral ( Hardwicke 1825; a mountain goat that mostly inhabits rocky cliffs), it is imperative to comprehend how future distributions might vary based on predicted climate change. In this work, MaxEnt modeling was employed to assess the habitat suitability of the target species under varying climate scenarios.

Endemic anurans are particularly vulnerable to environmental changes, and are susceptible to population declines because of their restricted distribution ranges. The Murree Hills Frog and Hazara Torrent Frog are associated with the torrential streams and nearby clear water pools in subtropical chir pine forest and other forest types, at elevations higher than 1000 m in Pakistan. In this study, we have provided data on the extent of movement of these frog species for the first time.
