Background: Essential tremor (ET) affects numerous adults, impacting quality of life (QOL) and often defying pharmacological treatment. Surgical interventions like deep brain stimulation (DBS) and lesional approaches, including radiofrequency, gamma-knife radiosurgery, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-guided focused ultrasound, offer solutions but are not devoid of limitations.

Objectives: This retrospective, single-center, single-blinded pilot study aimed to assess the safety and efficacy of unilateral MRI-guided laser interstitial thermal therapy (MRIg-LITT) thalamotomy for medically intractable ET.

Influence of age and sex on the thickness of the radial artery wall.

Curr Probl Cardiol

July 2024

Department of Cardiac Surgery, Amiens Picardie University Hospital Center, 1 Rue du Professeur Christian CABROL, 80054 Amiens, Cedex1, France.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the relationship between age and sex and the thickness of the radial artery wall, using samples from 48 cadavers (30 men and 18 women).
  • - Human radial arteries were prepared and measured to determine the intima-media thickness, with an average measurement taken across three sections of each artery.
  • - Results indicate a significant correlation between radial artery wall thickness and age for both men and women, suggesting that these factors should be considered in assessments of arterial health.

Background: The construction field is highly concerned with the risk of work-related accidents, and training employees is difficult due to their small numbers in most companies.

Objective: This study aimed to study the impact of a virtual reality (VR) training tool following a periodic occupational health medical visit on the feeling of personal effectiveness in preventing occupational risks related to co-activity on a construction site.

Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study with employees who had a periodic medical visit between April 1, 2022, and October 13, 2022, in a French occupational health service specializing in the construction field (Services Médicaux Interentreprises Bâtiment Travaux Publics [SMIBTP]).

Background: Overusing medication for primary headaches or other medical conditions can lead to dependency and medication-overuse headache (MOH) as an adverse drug reaction (ADR).

Objectives: To analyse reports of ADRs associated with MOH recorded in the French national pharmacovigilance database (FPVD).

Methods: This retrospective study selected all MOH cases reported in the FPVD from January 2000 to June 2023.

Background: The need for prophylactic antibiotic treatment of hand wounds in children requiring emergency surgical exploration is still controversial. Our starting hypothesis was that the absence of prophylactic antibiotic treatment in this setting (as specified by a decision tree) does not increase the likelihood of surgical site infection.

Methods: A decision tree for antibiotic prescription was developed by a working group in compliance with the guidelines issued by the French High Authority for Health, as part of a clinical pathway.

: Right-ventricular-to-pulmonary artery (RV-PA) coupling, measured as the ratio of tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE) to pulmonary artery systolic pressure (PASP), has emerged as a predictor factor in patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valvular replacement (TAVR). Right ventricular longitudinal shortening fraction (RV-LSF) outperformed TAPSE as a prognostic parameter in several diseases. We aimed to compare the prognostic ability of two RV-PA coupling parameters (TAPSE/PASP and the RV-LSF/PASP ratio) in identifying MACE occurrences.

The recreational use of nitrous oxide (N2O) is an emerging public health issue. Chronic N2O abuse may result in various clinical symptoms, encompassing neurological, psychiatric and cardiovascular outcomes. Despite the difficulties for the laboratory investigation of N2O intoxication, there is currently no guidelines in France to help both clinicians and biologists use appropriate biomarkers for the diagnosis and monitoring of patients with clinical symptoms potentially related to N2O intoxication.

Sorbonne University, Paris, France; Department of Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Surgery and Liver Transplantation, AP-HP Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital, Paris, France; Centre de Recherche de Saint-Antoine (CRSA), INSERM, UMRS-938, Paris, France. Electronic address:

Background: There are no data to evaluate the difference in populations and impact of centers with liver transplant programs in performing laparoscopic liver resection (LLR).

Methods: This was a multicenter study including patients undergoing LLR for benign and malignant tumors at 27 French centers from 1996 to 2018. The main outcomes were postoperative severe morbidity and mortality.

Article Synopsis
  • Kynurenine, a toxin that increases in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), has been linked to poor cardiovascular health outcomes and mortality.
  • In a study of over 2400 CKD patients, higher levels of serum-free kynurenine were found to increase the risk of cardiovascular events and mortality, independent of other factors.
  • The results suggest that serum-free kynurenine may play a significant role in cardiovascular risks among CKD patients, although it was not linked to overall mortality after adjusting for other compounds.

Objectives: Temocillin is an antibiotic belonging to the β-lactam family, introduced in 1988 but soon forgotten because of its narrow spectrum. Recently, it has been repurposed for its effectiveness against ESBL Enterobacteriaceae, and represents an alternative of choice to carbapenems due to its limited impact on the microbiota.

Patient: We present here a successful case of antibiotic prophylaxis of recurrent ESBL urinary tract infections with subcutaneously administered temocillin.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the prevalence and effects of pathogenic variants in a specific gene related to cardiomyopathy and sudden cardiac death among patients.
  • Out of 9,516 tested individuals, 31 were found to carry pathogenic variants, mostly presenting with dilated cardiomyopathy, with some also experiencing severe cardiac issues.
  • Although the overall prognosis for dilated cardiomyopathy in variant carriers seems favorable, severe conditions and early onset were noted, especially in those with double variants.

Objective: This study presents a comprehensive descriptive and comparative analysis of a Guinean cohort, focusing on geographical variables and medical histories in relation to family backgrounds and cardiovascular risk scores. The primary goal is to enhance understanding of cardiovascular risk factor distribution within the Guinean population and identify significant correlations among the investigated variables.

Patients & Methods: In this retrospective study, data from 2435 Guinean patients in 2022 were analyzed based on demographic and medical variables.

The evaluation of sperm DNA integrity is recommended in the sixth edition of the 2021 World Health Organization guidelines. Oxidative stress has been identified as a crucial factor leading to genome decay, lipid peroxidation, and nucleoprotein oxidation. This double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial aimed to assess the effect of oral antioxidant treatment (Fertilis), which contains L-carnitine and some micronutrients, in the improvement of conventional sperm parameters, sperm DNA integrity and in vitro fertilization/intracytoplasmic sperm injection (IVF/ICSI) outcomes.

Am J Kidney Dis

May 2024

Pharmacoepidemiology Unit, Department of Clinical Pharmacology, Amiens-Picardie University Medical Center, Amiens; MP3CV Laboratory, Jules Verne University of Picardie, Amiens. Electronic address:

Rationale & Objective: Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) are common in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). The impact of kidney function decline on serious ADR risk has been poorly investigated. We comprehensively describe ADRs and assess the relationship between estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and serious ADR risk.

Purpose: Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells have established themselves as an effective treatment for refractory or relapsed large B cell lymphoma (LBCL). Recently, the sDmax, which corresponds to the distance separating the two farthest lesions standardized by the patient's body surface area, has appeared as a prognostic factor in LBCL. This study aimed to identify [F]FDG-PET biomarkers associated with prognosis and predictive of adverse events in patients treated with CAR T cells.
