Background We previously showed that levels of prebeta-1 high-density lipoprotein (HDL), the principal acceptor of cholesterol effluxed from cells, including artery wall macrophages, are positively associated with coronary heart disease (CHD) and myocardial infarction (MI) risk. Methods and Results In a multiethnic follow-up cohort of 1249 individuals from University of California-San Francisco clinics, we determined the degree to which prebeta-1 HDL levels, both absolute and percentage of apolipoprotein AI, are associated with CHD and history of MI. Independent, strong, positive associations were found.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFThere are many reasons for recommendation of regular physical activity for organ transplant recipients, including 1) Restoration of physical functioning following deconditioning experienced prior to transplant; 2) Most patients are physically inactivity, 3) The high prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors that may be modified by regular physical activity; 4) Physical activity will optimize physical functioning following transplant; and 5) p; hysical activity may reduce or attenuate side effects of immunosuppression. There are many recommendations for regular physical activity as an integral part of treatment of conditions that are common to transplant recipients, including: hypertension management; hyperlipidemia; Diabetes; and elevated cardiovascular disease risk. Transplant recipients tolerate progressive exercise training well and can achieve levels of functioning similar or higher than normal individuals.

This article summarizes the results of a national survey of salary, staffing, and professional practice patterns in oncology nursing conducted by the Oncology Nursing Society. The respondents represent a wide geographic distribution, and data were analyzed in the aggregate, as well as by American Hospital Association (AHA) regions, to allow for predictions of regional as well as national trends. This article reports on national and regional trends in salaries for entry-level and experienced practitioners; salary patterns for agency and float pool nurses; and the methods for awarding salary increases to nursing personnel in the past year.
