Purpose Of Review: The densely populated Asia Pacific region is home to 600 million children, and suffers from a significant burden of morbidity and mortality due to infections associated with antimicrobial resistance (AMR). We aimed to identify the drivers, challenges and potential opportunities to alter the burden of AMR within the region.

Recent Findings: Despite the high AMR burden borne by the Asia Pacific region, there are limited (and geographically imbalanced) published data to delineate the contemporary epidemiology of serious multidrug-resistant bacterial infections in children.

Digitalization of health care in low- and middle-income countries.

Bull World Health Organ

February 2025

Faculty of Bioethics, Universidad Anahuac México, Mexico City, Mexico.

The rising incidence of noncommunicable diseases, combined with the costs of mitigating climate change, sovereign debt and regional conflicts, is undermining global health security and threatening progress towards achieving the sustainable development goals of the United Nations. The negative impact of these polycrises is disproportionately borne by low- and middle-income countries, which have the highest disease burden and lowest health-care spending. Health digitalization is emerging as a promising countermeasure, accelerated by artificial intelligence (AI) software and quantum computing hardware.

Objectives: To examine the effect of hypocaloric/hyperproteic enteral feeding vs normocaloric feeding on the survival of critically ill patients in the acute phase in the intensive care unit (ICU).

Methodology: Randomized clinical trials utilizing hypocaloric, hyperproteic, and normocaloric enteral feeding in the ICU were searched using the following terms ((((critically ill) OR (intensive care) OR (mechanically ventilated)) AND ((low-calorie enteral feeding) OR (high-protein enteral feeding)))) in MEDLINE, PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar by two independent authors.

Results: There were no significant differences in hospital mortality [odds ratio (OR), 1.

The opportunistic pathogen sp. ATCC 39006 (S39006) is a rod-shaped, motile, Gram-negative bacterium that produces a 𝛽-lactam antibiotic (a carbapenem) and a bioactive red-pigmented tripyrrole antibiotic, prodigiosin. It is also the only known enterobacterium that naturally produces intracellular gas vesicles (GVs), enabling cells to float in static water columns.

Background: Fungal pretreatment for partial separation of lignocellulosic components may reduce lignocellulose recalcitrance during the production of biofuels and biochemicals. Quantitative and qualitative modification of plant lignin through genetic engineering or traditional breeding may also reduce the recalcitrance. This study was conducted to examine the effects of combining these two approaches using three white rot fungi and mulberry wood with an altered lignin structure.

Conusvenoms are composed of peptides that are commonly post-translationally modified, increasing their chemical diversity beyond what is encoded in the genome and enhancing their potency and selectivity. This study describes how PTMs alter an α-conotoxin's selectivity for specific nAChR subtypes. Venom from the cone snailConus(Asprella)neocostatuswas fractionated using high-performance liquid chromatography and tested using a behavioral intracranial mouse bioassay and a cholinergic calcium imaging assay using SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells.

Ovarian granulosa cells produce a variety of biologically active compounds in addition to steroid hormones that include numerous families of growth factors, cytokines and adipokines. Many of these function as endocrine, paracrine and autocrine hormones to regulate ovarian activity. The goal of this review is to provide an update on the evidence in domestic animals on how FSH, insulin and IGF1 regulate the function of granulosa cells with a focus on ovarian steroidogenesis and cell proliferation with comparisons across six domestic animals: pigs, cattle, horses, water buffalo, goats and sheep.

Z boson events at the Large Hadron Collider can be selected with high purity and are sensitive to a diverse range of QCD phenomena. As a result, these events are often used to probe the nature of the strong force, improve Monte Carlo event generators, and search for deviations from standard model predictions. All previous measurements of Z boson production characterize the event properties using a small number of observables and present the results as differential cross sections in predetermined bins.
