A patient with systemic amyloidosis developed portal hypertension, acute liver failure and multiorgan dysfunction. Extensive testing was unrevealing for paraproteinemia, plasma cell dyscrasia, infectious, or inflammatory conditions. The purpose of this study is to describe a single institution's experience using Oncozene (OZ) microspheres for transarterial chemoembolization (OZ-TACE) of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and to compare tolerability, safety, short-term radiographic tumor response, progression-free survival (PFS), and overall survival (OS) of these procedures to TACE (LC-TACE) performed with LC beads (LC). A retrospective, matched cohort study of patients undergoing DEB-TACE (drug-eluting bead transarterial chemoembolization) with OZ or LC was performed. The cohort comprised 23 patients undergoing 29 TACE with 75 or 100 μm OZ and 24 patients undergoing 29 TACE with 100-300 μm LC.

Epidemiological studies have not only shed light on the prevalence and incidence of the disease but have also unmasked important environmental risk factors, including the role of diabetes and dyslipidemia in disease pathogenesis. Genetic association studies have identified single nucleotide polymorphisms implicated in NAFLD-HCC, many of which are part of lipid metabolism pathways.

We present a case patient in her second trimester of pregnancy who developed acute liver failure from metastatic neuroendocrine tumor (NET). Although she underwent prompt induction of a non-viable fetus due to initial concerns of hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelet count syndrome, her liver function continued to deteriorate postpartum. She was subsequently transferred to our institution in order to undergo further evaluation that included a transjugular liver biopsy and subsequent diagnosis of high-grade NET.
