Deinococcus radiodurans can survive extreme doses of ionizing radiation due to the very efficient DNA repair mechanisms that are able to cope even with hundreds of double-strand breaks. RecA, the critical protein of homologous recombination in bacteria, is one of the key components of the DNA-repair system. Repair of double-strand breaks requires RecA binding to DNA and assembly of the RecA nucleoprotein helical filaments.

Phospholipid transport nanosystem (PTNS) for drug delivery is based on soybean phosphatidylcholine. The morphology of PTNS is investigated by means of small-angle X-ray scattering. The obtained results allow one to answer the key question from the viewpoint of organization of drug incorporation whether the PTNS nanoparticles have a structure of micelles or vesicles.

The measurement of primary [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] production at mid-rapidity ([Formula: see text] 0.5) in proton-proton collisions at [Formula: see text][Formula: see text] 7 TeV performed with a large ion collider experiment at the large hadron collider (LHC) is reported. Particle identification is performed using the specific ionisation energy-loss and time-of-flight information, the ring-imaging Cherenkov technique and the kink-topology identification of weak decays of charged kaons.

The production of the strange and double-strange baryon resonances ([Formula: see text], [Formula: see text]) has been measured at mid-rapidity ([Formula: see text][Formula: see text]) in proton-proton collisions at [Formula: see text] [Formula: see text] 7 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. Transverse momentum spectra for inelastic collisions are compared to QCD-inspired models, which in general underpredict the data. A search for the [Formula: see text] pentaquark, decaying in the [Formula: see text] channel, has been carried out but no evidence is seen.

We present the first measurement at the LHC of exclusive J/ψ photoproduction off protons, in ultraperipheral proton-lead collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV. Events are selected with a dimuon pair produced either in the rapidity interval, in the laboratory frame, 2.

Recent studies have elucidated key principles governing folding and stability of α-helices in short peptides and globular proteins. In this chapter we review briefly those principles and describe a protocol for the de novo design of highly stable α-helixes using the SEQOPT algorithm. This algorithm is based on AGADIR, the statistical mechanical theory for helix-coil transitions in monomeric peptides, and the tunneling algorithm for global sequence optimization.

We show that the merging of the spin- and valley-split Landau levels at the chemical potential is an intrinsic property of a strongly interacting two-dimensional electron system in silicon. Evidence for the level merging is given by available experimental data.

The decays of (214)Po into (210)Pb and of (212)Po into (208)Pb tagged by the previous decays from (214)Bi and (212)Bi have been studied inserting quartz vials inside the Counting Test Facility (CTF) at the underground laboratory in Gran Sasso (LNGS). We find that the mean lifetime of (214)Po is (236.00 ± 0.

Using molecular modeling techniques we have built the full atomic structure and performed molecular dynamics simulations for the complexes formed by Escherichia coli RecX protein with a single-stranded oligonucleotide and with RecA presynaptic filament. Based on the modeling and SANS experimental data a sandwich-like filament structure formed two chains of RecX monomers bound to the opposite sides of the single stranded DNA is proposed for RecX::ssDNA complex. The model for RecX::RecA::ssDNA include RecX binding into the grove of RecA::ssDNA filament that occurs mainly via Coulomb interactions between RecX and ssDNA.

The rapid growth of the available crystallographic information about proteins and binding pockets creates remarkable opportunities for enriching the drug research pipelines with computational prediction of novel protein-ligand interactions. While quantum mechanical approaches are known to provide unprecedented accuracy in structure-based binding energy calculations, they are limited to only small systems of dozens of atoms. In the structural chemogenomics era, it is critical that new approaches are developed that enable application of QM methodologies to non-covalent interactions in systems as large as protein-ligand complexes and conformational ensembles.

We report on detailed polarized small-angle neutron scattering on cubic FeGe in magnetic fields applied either along (transverse) the scattering vector or parallel (longitudinal) to the neutron beam. The (H, T) phase diagrams for all principal axes contain a segmented A-phase region just below the onset of magnetic order. Hexagonal Bragg-spot patterns were observed across the entire A-phase region for the longitudinal geometry.
