Article Synopsis
  • Biomechanical stimuli are crucial for the development of articular cartilage in early fetuses and affect adult cartilage cell function; this study investigates how these mechanical forces influence chondroprogenitor cells in vitro.
  • Chondroprogenitor cells from chicken embryos were subjected to mechanical loading using a bioreactor, which significantly improved cartilage matrix production and the expression of key cartilage components like collagen type II and aggrecan.
  • The study highlights that these effects are mediated through enhanced activity of the PKA pathway and the transcription factor Sox9 while showing that certain cAMP mediators and the phosphatase PP2A play roles in cartilage formation under mechanical load.

Objective: In type C pelvic ring injuries, the operative stabilization of the posterior ring is absolutely indicated. There exist four different types of operative methods: iliosacral screw fixation, transsacral plate synthesis, ventral plate fixation (primarily for sacroiliac luxations), and local plate synthesis performed on the dorsal cortex of the sacrum. In our current article, we analyzed the stability of fixation methods used together with bilateral iliolumbar techniques.

Aim: The purpose of the study was to assess the stability provided by an ilio-iliac dorsal plate fixation technique using an AO narrow DCP on the pelvic brim in vertically and rotationally unstable type-C pelvic ring injuries.

Materials And Methods: We examined 12 fresh cadaver pelvises in a single limb stance load. A type-C pelvic ring injury (a type I lateral sacral fracture in the classification of Denis with symphysis pubis rupture) was performed on the cadaver specimen and fixed with a four-hole narrow dynamic compression plate to stabilize the symphysis pubis rupture; the sacrum fracture was stabilized either anteriorly with two 3-hole reconstruction plates ("anterior plate osteosynthesis") or with a posterior fixation using a 12-hole narrow DCP.

The developing callus requires sufficient oxygen and substrate supply. Despite the importance of these processes, we have limited understanding of regulation of the callus microcirculation. We aimed to assess the role of vasoactive substances in the microcirculation of the callus in a gap osteotomy model in the rabbit detected by laser-Doppler flowmetry.

The factors involved in the pathogenesis of Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, the two major types of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are summarized. Intestinal antigens composed of bacterial flora along with antigen presentation and impaired mucosal barrier have an important role in the initiation of IBD. The bacterial community may be modified by the use of antibiotics and probiotics.

Purpose Of The Study: The comparison of the stability of four surgical methods for the treatment of vertically and rotationally unstable type C pelvic ring injuries.

Methods: We produced a type C pelvic ring injury (type Denis II fracture of the sacrum and symphysiolysis) on a finite element model, in the case of standing on both feet. We stabilized the symphysiolysis with a five-hole reconstruction plate; the sacrum fracture was fixed in the first experiment with two, two-hole reconstruction plates on the ventral surface, in the second one we applied dorsally the transsacral, narrow DC plate, in the third one with KFI-H plate, and in the last one with iliosacral screw.

Few data are available on measurements of serum concentrations of complement proteins in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Therefore we measured serum levels of C3, C4, and C1-esterase inhibitor (C1-INH) as well as C-reactive protein (CRP) in 167 patients with Crohn's disease (CD) and 111 patients with ulcerative colitis (UC). Median serum concentrations of C3 and C1-INH were significantly higher in CD than in UC.

Arthrodesis of the septic ankle joint.

Eur J Orthop Surg Traumatol

May 1996

Department of Traumatology, Semmelweis University of Medical Sciences, Péterfy Hospital, P.O. Box 76, H-1441, Budapest, Hungary.

In chronic septic complications of the ankle joint bony fusion can be achieved with radical resection of necrotic tissues, special positioning of the foot and extrafocal stabilisation. For non-cooperative patients with bland infections intramedullary stabilisation can be used after which early full weight bearing is possible. The correct technique of operation together with adjuvant therapy with a Septopal chain increases the healing chances of patients and reduces the time and costs of therapy.
