Article Synopsis
  • The study confirms the usefulness of a five-point ultrasound method for diagnosing pediatric elbow injuries, addressing the lack of standardized approaches in clinical settings.
  • A total of 365 children suspected of having closed elbow injuries were assessed using ultrasound and standard x-rays, with two orthopedic surgeons and a resident conducting the exams.
  • Results indicated that 165 out of 365 cases showed positive findings on x-rays, categorizing various types of fractures and dislocations, with the abnormal sonographic dorsal fat pad sign serving as a significant diagnostic indicator.

eHealth and mHealth.

Eur J Hosp Pharm

January 2019

Policy and Advocacy, European Association of Hospital Pharmacists, Brussels, Belgium.

Both electronic health (eHealth) and mobile health (mHealth) are becoming prominent components of healthcare. In order for healthcare electronic services to be safe and effective and add genuine value to the system, the European Association of Hospital Pharmacists (EAHP) believes that these should be developed in close collaboration with healthcare professionals including hospital pharmacists, and patients. Consequently, the EAHP calls in its position paper upon national governments and health systems across Europe to work towards (1) systematic and European Union-wide achievement of electronic prescribing, administration and use of electronic medical records; (2) ensuring barcoding of medicines to the single units in primary packages to enable more widespread take-up of bedside scanning in European hospitals, thus improving patient safety; (3) appropriate regulatory oversight mechanisms for mHealth applications to ensure that they have a positive impact and adequately protect patient data; (4) provision of appropriate eHealth/mHealth training opportunities to healthcare professionals and promotion of digital health literacy; and (5) involvement of hospital pharmacists in the design, specification of parameters and evaluation of information and communication technology within the medicines processes.

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) gained a lot of interest recently, especially that the conversion rate to Alzheimer Disease (AD) in the amnestic subtype (aMCI) is higher than in the non-amnestic subtype (naMCI). We aimed to determine whether and how diffusion-weighted MRI (DWI) using the diffusion tensor model (DTI) can differentiate MCI subtypes from healthy subjects. High resolution 3D T1W and DWI images of patients (aMCI, n = 18; naMCI, n = 20; according to Petersen criteria) and controls (n = 27) were acquired at 3T and processed using ExploreDTI and SPM.

Ventral root avulsion induces dramatic loss of the affected spinal cord motoneurons. The neuroprotective effect of riluzole has been previously proven on the injured motoneurons: the vast majority of them can be rescued even when they have no possibility to regenerate their axons. In this study the number of injured motoneurons rescued by riluzole treatment and their capacity to reinnervate the denervated forelimb muscles was investigated.
