The influence of ultrasonic treatment parameters of chitin nanofibrils aqueous suspension on structure, strength and deformation properties of chitosan-based composite films and fibers was investigated. Model calculations of ultrasound-induced cavitation parameters in the aqueous suspension of the chitin nanofibrils showed that an increase in the field power up to 630 W led to destruction of the cavity, to an increase in the temperature in the vicinity of cavitation area (up to 507 °C) and, as a consequence, to destruction of chitin glycoside ring (which is confirmed by the IR data). The results of light scattering, IR spectroscopy, and electron microscopy investigations indicated that the optimal duration of ultrasonic treatment of the chitin nanofibrils aqueous solution was 4-10 min (depending on oriented state of the scaffold).

Nanomaterials (Basel)

January 2022

Center for Nanotechnologies, Alferov University, Khlopina 8/3, 194021 Saint Petersburg, Russia.

Tailorable synthesis of axially heterostructured epitaxial nanowires (NWs) with a proper choice of materials allows for the fabrication of novel photonic devices, such as a nanoemitter in the resonant cavity. An example of the structure is a GaP nanowire with ternary GaPAs insertions in the form of nano-sized discs studied in this work. With the use of the micro-photoluminescence technique and numerical calculations, we experimentally and theoretically study photoluminescence emission in individual heterostructured NWs.

Materials (Basel)

December 2021

Institute of Machinery, Materials and Transport, Peter the Great Saint Petersburg Polytechnic University, Polytechnicheskaya, 29, 195221 Saint Petersburg, Russia.

Three-dimensional printed nitinol (NiTi) alloys have broad prospects for application in medicine due to their unique mechanical properties (shape memory effect and superplasticity) and the possibilities of additive technologies. However, in addition to mechanical properties, specific physicochemical characteristics of the surface are necessary for successful medical applications. In this work, a comparative study of additively manufactured (AM) NiTi samples etched in HSO/HO, HCl/HSO and NHOH/HO mixtures was performed.

Microcirculation is one of the basic functional processes where the main gas exchange between red blood cells (RBCs) and surrounding tissues occurs. It is greatly influenced by the shape and deformability of RBCs, which can be affected by oxidative stress induced by different drugs and diseases leading to anemia. Here we investigated how in vitro microfluidic characterization of RBCs transit velocity in microcapillaries can indicate cells damage and its correlation with clinical hematological analysis.

RNA Binding by Plant Serpins in vitro.

Biochemistry (Mosc)

October 2021

Department of Virology, Faculty of Biology, Lomonosov Moscow State University, Moscow, 119234, Russia.

Serpins constitute a large family of protease inhibitors with regulatory functions found in all living organisms. Most plant serpins have not been functionally characterized, with the exception of Arabidopsis thaliana AtSerpin1, an inhibitor of pro-apoptotic proteases, which is involved in the regulation of the programmed cell death induction, and Cucurbita maxima CmPS1, a phloem protein, which presumably inhibits insect digestive proteases and binds RNA. CmPS1 interacts most efficiently with highly structured RNA; in particular, it forms a specific complex with tRNA.

Type III interferons exhibit antiviral activity against influenza viruses, coronaviruses, rotaviruses, and others. In addition, this type of interferon theoretically has therapeutic advantages, in comparison with type I interferons, due to its ability to activate a narrower group of genes in a relatively small group of target cells. Hence, it can elicit more targeted antiviral or immunomodulatory responses.

TCRpair: prediction of functional pairing between HLA-A*02:01-restricted T-cell receptor α and β chains.

Bioinformatics

November 2021

Department of Bioinformatics, Wissenschaftszentrum Weihenstephan, Technical University of Munich, Freising 85354, Germany.

Summary: The ability of a T cell to recognize foreign peptides is defined by a single α and a single β hypervariable complementarity determining region (CDR3), which together form the T-cell receptor (TCR) heterodimer. In ∼30-35% of T cells, two α chains are expressed at the mRNA level but only one α chain is part of the functional TCR. This effect can also be observed for β chains, although it is less common.

Tailorable synthesis of III-V semiconductor heterostructures in nanowires (NWs) enables new approaches with respect to designing photonic and electronic devices at the nanoscale. We present a comprehensive study of highly controllable self-catalyzed growth of gallium phosphide (GaP) NWs on template-free silicon (111) substrates by molecular beam epitaxy. We report the approach to form the silicon oxide layer, which reproducibly provides a high yield of vertical GaP NWs and control over the NW surface density without a pre-patterned growth mask.

We performed integrated modelling of the chemical pathways of formation for boron nitride nanotube (BNNT) precursors during high-temperature synthesis in a B/Nmixture. Integrated modelling includes quantum chemistry, Quantum-classical molecular dynamics, thermodynamic modelling, and kinetic approaches. We demonstrate that BN compounds are formed via the interaction of molecular nitrogen with small boron clusters, rather than through interactions with less reactive liquid boron.

We report precision measurements of the gradient of the Casimir force between an Au-coated sphere and graphene sheet deposited on a silica plate. The measurement data are compared with exact theory using the polarization tensor found in the framework of the Dirac model including effects of the nonzero chemical potential and energy gap of the graphene sample with no fitting parameters. The very good agreement between experiment and theory demonstrates the unusually big thermal effect at separations below 1  μm which has never been observed for conventional 3D materials.

Huntington's disease (HD) is a neurodegenerative, dominantly inherited genetic disease caused by expansion of the polyglutamine tract in the huntingtin gene. At the cellular level, HD is characterized by the accumulation of mutant huntingtin protein in brain cells, resulting in the development of the HD phenotype, which includes mental disorders, decreased cognitive abilities, and progressive motor impairments in the form of chorea. Despite numerous studies, no unambigous connection between the accumulation of mutant protein and selective death of striatal neurons has yet been established.
