Introduction And Objectives: Full blood examinations, often referred to as FBE, are commonly ordered postoperatively, despite limited utility in many of its markers in the acute phase. It is estimated that in the 2022-2023 financial year, the Australian healthcare system billed over $13 million for full blood examinations (FBEs) to Medicare. This study aims to assess the cost of using FBE following surgery.

Although rare, radiotherapy can induce secondary malignancies, such as radiation-induced angiosarcoma (RIAS), which is associated with a poor prognosis. Early detection is crucial for improving outcomes. The modified Cahan criteria are instrumental in diagnosing RIAS, which is ultimately confirmed through histological examination.

Omental infarction is a rare cause of acute abdominal pain, often benign and self-limiting. The significance of infarction lies in the fact that it can mimic other abdominal pathologies including appendicitis, cholecystitis, pancreatitis, or reflux disease. Diagnostic laparoscopy provides the definitive diagnosis of omental infarction, but it is invasive and limited due to resources.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers studied how using a special type of report called a personalized and patient-centered report (PCR) helps patients understand their prostate cancer diagnosis better after surgery compared to a regular report.
  • They invited patients from three clinics to participate and gave them either the PCR or a standard report and then tested how well they remembered important details about their diagnosis.
  • The results showed that both groups felt happy with their healthcare experience, but there was no big difference in how much they understood their condition.

Objectives: To develop an online treatment decision aid (OTDA) to assist patients with low-risk prostate cancer (LRPC) and their partners in making treatment decisions.

Patients And Methods: , an OTDA for LRPC, was rigorously co-designed by patients with a confirmed diagnosis or at risk of LRPC and their partners, clinicians, researchers and website designers/developers. A theoretical model guided the development process.

Key Clinical Message: The current landscape of literature highlights that there is insufficient well-powered and robust evidence to support the integration of intravenous methadone into current guidelines and frameworks in supporting the pain management of cancer patient with complex pain syndromes. However, there is preliminary evidence, both from the literature as well as this case study that highlights intravenous methadone may be efficaciously and safety used for the management of postoperative pain in cancer patients with chronic pain undergoing operative management. Further research is required to fully elucidate key considerations of integrating this medication into clinical practice including consideration into dosing, opioid conversion, tolerance, and safety.

tandem duplications are recurrent in adult and paediatric acute myeloid leukaemia and have been reported to be associated with a poor prognosis. Co-mutations in and are common while morphological dysplasia is frequent. The role of UBTF-TDs in leukemogenesis is yet to be elucidated; however they have been proposed as early initiating events, making them attractive for assessment of MRD and a potential therapeutic target.

Knowledge of factors associated with superior outcomes in women treated with urethral bulking agents for stress urinary incontinence (SUI) remains limited. The aim of this study was to examine associations between post-treatment outcomes in women who had undergone polyacrylamide hydrogel injections for SUI, and physiological and self-reported variables captured during pre-treatment clinical evaluation. A cross-sectional study was undertaken in female patients treated for SUI with polyacrylamide hydrogel injections by a single urologist between January 2012 and December 2019.

Zanubrutinib-treated and treatment-naïve patients with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) or Waldenstrom's macroglobulinaemia were recruited in this prospective study to comprehensively profile humoral and cellular immune responses to COVID-19 vaccination. Overall, 45 patients (median 72 years old) were recruited; the majority were male (71%), had CLL (76%) and were on zanubrutinib (78%). Seroconversion rates were 65% and 77% following two and three doses, respectively.

Introduction: Several systemic therapies have demonstrated a survival advantage in metastatic castration resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC). Access to these medications varies significantly worldwide. In Australia until recently, patients must have received docetaxel first, unless unsuitable for chemotherapy, despite no evidence suggesting superiority over androgen receptor signalling inhibitors (ARSIs).

Pembrolizumab is an immune checkpoint inhibitor with antitumor activity in other organ malignancies. We present this case -demonstrating multiple inflammatory adverse events associated with Pembrolizumab (in a single patient), in order to increase awareness and facilitate earlier identification of the wide-ranging cutaneous side effects associated with immunotherapy.

Background: Delayed gastric emptying can complicate surgery for hiatus hernia. The aim of this study was to quantify its incidence following laparoscopic repair of very large hiatus hernias, identify key risk factors for its occurrence and determine its impact on clinical outcomes.

Methods: Data collected from a randomized trial of patients who underwent laparoscopic mesh versus sutured repair of very large hiatus hernias (more than 50 per cent of stomach in chest) were analysed retrospectively.

Despite growing evidence for GLP-1R molecular-based imaging, successful localization of insulinomas may require the use of multiple imaging modalities. Not all benign insulinomas express the GLP-1R as expected. Our case demonstrates that there is a still an important role for traditional methods for the anatomical localization of an insulinoma.
