Purpose: Periodontitis is considered a local risk factor for medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (MRONJ). However, little is known about the progression of periodontitis in the presence of zoledronic acid (ZOL). The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of the systemic use of ZOL on the progression of experimental periodontitis (EP) in rats, as ZOL could modulate the progression of periodontitis and concomitantly cause MRONJ in individuals with periodontitis.

Purpose: The objective of this study was to evaluate the anatomical distance of the maxillary artery, the most superior portion of the condyle and subcondyle in standardized coronal sections, acquired from 16 hemifaces in 8 cadavers.

Methods: Measurements were taken to evaluate the distance between the uppermost portion of the mandibular condyle and the height of the maxillary artery (AB) and between the lateral (CD) and medial (EF) sides of the condylar neck to the artery.

Results: The mean for AB was 21.

Composite resins for posterior tooth restorations have become a viable alternative to dental amalgam. Failures sometimes cannot be easily explained, and we hypothesize that a genetic component may influence longevity of restorations. We aimed to determine if there is any evidence for a difference in the performance of amalgams versus composite resin in extensive posterior restorations.

Cryosurgery is a treatment modality consisting in the destruction of tissue by the application of extremely low temperatures. This causes irreversible damage to cellular metabolism, leading to tissue destruction within minutes, a mechanism that may be beneficial when used in diseased tissues. Because cryosurgery is effective, simple, and easy to perform, it has been used in the treatment of lesions in both medical and dental fields.

Article Synopsis
  • A case series of 10 individuals with nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS) is presented, detailing their symptoms and follow-up over 10 years.
  • They exhibited specific features such as calcification of the falx cerebri, mild hypertelorism, and frontal bossing, with varying prevalence of associated tumors.
  • The study emphasizes the significance of recognizing NBCCS for effective management and monitoring, particularly in patients with multiple odontogenic keratocyst tumors, due to its autosomal dominant inheritance and cancer risk.

Opinions regarding the treatment of multicystic ameloblastoma are divergent due to its benign nature and the high rate of recurrence if not adequately excised. The aim of the present study was to perform a systematic review of the literature for a qualitative and quantitative assessment of studies addressing primary multicystic ameloblastoma with regard to treatment and recurrence. Searches were conducted of the Ovid Medline and Embase databases for articles published up to January 2014.

The ventriculo-peritoneal shunt (VPS) is the technique most often employed for the treatment of hydrocephaly, but may present complications after placement. Retrograde migration of the peritoneal catheter to the cervical region is rarely reported. This manuscript to describes a case of migration of the distal portion of the VPS system to the neck after dental treatment in a child and discusses the possible causes for this complication.

Sialolithiasis is a benign pathology that occurs most frequently in the submandibular salivary gland due to its anatomic features. Depending on the size and degree of calcification, a sialolith can be visible in radiographic examinations. Patients commonly experience pain and/or edema when the ducts are obstructed.

Background: An increase in blood pressure during dental treatment has been investigated with regard to potential medical risks since previous studies suggest that dental procedures may cause stress to the patient and, consequently, the cardiovascular system. The aim of the present study was to analyze hemodynamic changes following the administration of either 2% lidocaine (L100) or 4% articaine (A100) (both with epinephrine 1:100,000) in the surgical removal of symmetrically positioned lower third molars.

Methods: A prospective, randomized, double-blind, clinical trial was carried out involving 47 patients.
