Academic Unit of Serra Talhada, Federal Rural University of Pernambuco, Avenida Gregório Ferraz Nogueira s/n, Serra Talhada, Pernambuco 56909-535, Brazil. Electronic address:

This study aimed to compare the digestibility of tropical grasses by horses by the in vivo method using mobile nylon bags with the in vitro digestibility method using horse feces as a source of inoculum. Five horses were used in a 2 × 5 factorial design with randomized blocks featuring two methods (in vivo and in vitro) and five grasses: Tifton 85 hay (Cynodon spp.), sixweeks threeawn grass (Aristida adsencionis, Linn), Alexandergrass (Brachiaria plantaginea (Link) Hitchc.

Objectives: This study sought to explore and externally validate the Carpenter instrument's efficacy in predicting postdischarge fall risk among older adults admitted to the emergency department (ED) for reasons other than falls or related injuries.

Methods: A prospective cohort study was conducted on 779 patients aged ≥ 65 years from a tertiary hospital in São Paulo, Brazil, who were monitored for up to 6 months post-ED hospitalization. The Carpenter instrument, which evaluates the four risk factors nonhealing foot sores, self-reported depression, inability to self-clip toenails, and prior falls, was utilized to assess fall risk.

To our knowledge, no study has investigated the reliability of the time to exhaustion (TTE) test during constant-load trials in Olympic distance cross-country mountain bike (XCO-MTB) athletes. Thus, the aim was to analyze the reliability of the TTE test at intensities above peak oxygen uptake (VO) in trained XCO-MTB athletes. Fifteen male XCO-MTB athletes (mean ± SD: age 31.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the 5A counseling model on physical activity levels in adults, using a systematic review of literature from multiple scientific databases up to May 2022.
  • Four relevant studies were analyzed, focusing on participants aged 40 to 55, mostly women; these studies combined counseling with additional strategies like action plans and text reminders, but only one showed significant improvement in daily steps.
  • The conclusion drawn was that while the 5A counseling model did not demonstrate strong evidence of improving physical activity, future research is encouraged to refine methods and strategies for better outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • A machine learning method was used to analyze genome polymorphisms for predicting severe COVID-19 outcomes in 96 Brazilian patients.
  • The study identified 12 important SNPs using a support vector machine approach, achieving metrics of 85% accuracy, 80% sensitivity, and 90% specificity in classification.
  • The findings indicate that genetic factors play a crucial role in determining the risk of developing severe COVID-19, including identifying individuals at risk even when they are not infected.

The inverse relationship between exercise intensity and affective valence is well established for continuous exercise but not for high-intensity interval exercise (HIIE). The objective was to verify the dose-response relationship between exercise intensity and affective valence in HIIE sessions. Eleven young men underwent a vigorous-intensity continuous exercise (VICE) and three HIIE sessions at the same average intensity (70% of peak power-W) and duration (20 min) but with different amplitudes: 10 × [1 min at 90% W/1 min at 50% W]-HIIE-90/50; 10 × [1 min at 100% W/1 min at 40% W]-HIIE-100/40; 10 × [1 min at 110% W/1 min at 30% W]-HIIE-110/30.

Several studies have investigated the interaction between acute physical exercise and cognitive performance. However, few studies have investigated this issue during acute high-intensity exercise. In the present study, we evaluated executive functions (EFs) during incremental exercise in three different intensities [below lactate threshold (LT), at LT, and above LT], measuring EFs performance, gaze behavior, and pupil diameter.

Influence of COVID-19 pandemic on molar pregnancy and postmolar gestational trophoblastic neoplasia: An observational study.

BJOG

February 2023

New England Trophoblastic Disease Center, Division of Gynecologic Oncology, Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Biology, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the incidence and severity of molar pregnancy (MP) and postmolar gestational trophoblastic neoplasia (GTN) in Brazil.
  • Researchers collected data from 2,662 patients treated between 2015 and 2020, using a mix of retrospective cohort analysis and questionnaires to assess health conditions during the pandemic.
  • Results showed that while the overall incidence of MP/GTN remained stable during 2020, patients diagnosed during the pandemic had a higher likelihood of being diagnosed later in pregnancy and experienced longer delays in starting chemotherapy compared to the pre-pandemic years.

Objective: To determine which Thyroglobulin (Tg) level after levothyroxine (LT) withdrawal (stimulated thyroglobulin - sTg) measured before radioiodine therapy (RAIT) is able to predict incomplete response to treatment of differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) with greater sensitivity and specificity one year after initial treatment with I.

Methods: A chart review was performed in which 375 patients with DTC treated with RAIT were included. The sTg was measured in all patients prior to treatment with I.

Introduction: Symptomatic heart disease may be present in patients with advanced-stage acromegaly. However, earlier assessment of subclinical ventricular systolic dysfunction can be accomplished through speckle-tracking echocardiography (STE) for the study of myocardial strain. The few such studies in this population to date have produced conflicting results.

Laser-photobiomodulation (L-PBM) has been widely studied and its biomodulatory effects have been established on irradiated cells, increasing viability and proliferation and on damaged tissues. In addition, L-PBM may reduce and modulate the inflammatory process. The effect of 660-nm and 808-nm laser-photobiomodulation on bone repair around titanium dental implants placed in rat's femur was evaluated by histomorphometry.

Int J Oral Maxillofac Surg

March 2021

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, School of Dentistry, Oswaldo Cruz Hospital, University of Pernambuco, Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil. Electronic address:

Throat packs are commonly used in maxillofacial surgeries. However, the evidence to support the benefits of their use is controversial. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of throat packs in preventing postoperative nausea and vomiting, and their influence on the incidence of sore throat and dysphagia in patients undergoing orthognathic surgery.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of Spirulina Platensis supplementation on selected blood markers of oxidative stress, muscle damage, inflammation, and performance in trained rats. Rats (250 g - 300 g) were submitted to a strength training program (eight weeks), divided into four groups: control (GT) (trained without supplementation), trained with daily-supplementation of 50 mg/kg (GT50), 150 mg/kg (GT150) and 500 mg/kg (GT500). Training consisted of a jump protocol in PVC-cylinder containing water, with increasing load over experimental weeks.
