Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and Periodontology, Ribeirão Preto Dental School, University of São Paulo, Ribeirão Preto, SP, Brazil. Electronic address:

Objective: The objective of this study was to summarize and compare the local and systemic impact of different models of experimental periodontitis in mice.

Design: After defining the PICO strategy, was performed a search for articles in English following the PRISMA guidelines in PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane and LILACS databases. The search strategy provided 8815 articles from which were selected experimental studies comparing the local and/or systemic effects of two or more models for the induction of periodontitis in mice according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria.

Biotypic classification of facial profiles using discrete cosine transforms on lateral radiographs.

Arch Oral Biol

November 2021

University of Pernambuco, Pernambuco Dental School, Oswaldo Cruz University Hospital, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Traumatology, Recife, PE 50100-130, Brazil. Electronic address:

Objective: The aim of the study was to use discrete cosine transforms to graph soft tissue curves in lateral cephalometric radiographs and, with the obtained mathematical values, to group these curves by both traditional biotypes and cluster systems, in order to evaluate discriminatory capacity in terms of accuracy.

Design: A sample of 625 lateral radiographs of adult patients (319 women and 306 men) was classified by facial biotype based on the ANB angle and mandibular plane angle. The curves of the facial profile were digitized with 50 equidistant points and discrete cosine transform was applied to analyze these curves mathematically for the determination of the accuracy of the classification of traditional biotypes.

Detection of mast cells in ameloblastomas and odontogenic keratocysts.

J Clin Exp Dent

August 2020

DDS, MSc, PhD, Full Professor, Department of Surgery and Oral Pathology, Pernambuco Dental School, University of Pernambuco, Camaragibe, Pernambuco, Brazil.

Article Synopsis
  • MCs (mast cells) are linked to disease progression and may influence conditions like tumors, but their exact role in odontogenic lesions like ameloblastomas (AMBs) and odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) is unclear.
  • A study analyzed 40 odontogenic lesions (20 OKCs and 20 AMBs) using histological methods and statistical analysis to assess the presence and impact of MCs in these conditions.
  • Results showed that MCs were found more frequently in OKCs (60%) than in AMBs (35%), with significant differences between solid and unicystic AMBs, indicating potential roles for MCs but no definitive conclusions on their biological influence overall.

Cheiloscopy in individuals with Down syndrome and their nonsyndromic biological siblings.

J Forensic Odontostomatol

September 2019

University of Pernambuco - UPE, Pernambuco Dental School, Master Program in Forensics, Camaragibe, Pernambuco, Brazil.

The study aimed to carry out a comparative analysis between the lip print patterns in individuals with Down Syndrome and their nonsyndromic biological siblings. This was a cross-sectional blind study using an inductive approach and extensive direct observation procedures. A total of 68 cheiloscopic charts, named cheilograms, were divided into two groups (n=34), as follows: G1, including Down Syndrome individuals; and G2, including their nonsyndromic siblinggs.

The purpose of this study was to test the usefulness of some morphometric parameters of the teeth in 5 different age groups through images of Cone Beam CT. 118 upper central incisors clinically acquired of 60 women and 58 men aged between 22 and 70 years were selected. The hard tissue volume and the pulp cavity volume of each tooth was obtained and computed by the software DentalSlice(®) and the measures were assessed (pulp cavity volume, hard tissue volume, tooth volume and pulp cavity/tooth volume ratio).

Context: Ameloblastomas are benign tumors of the jaws with locally invasive capacity.

Aim: The aim of this study was to review 112 cases of ameloblastoma seen over an 18-year period (1992-2009) at the Pernambuco Dental School, University of Pernambuco and at Federal University of Sergipe, in the northeast region of Brazil.

Materials And Methods: THE FOLLOWING DATA WERE SELECTED FOR ANALYSIS: age, gender, race, site distribution, radiographic appearance, association with an impacted tooth, size, presence of symptoms, clinicopathologic subtypes and recurrence.

The calcifying cystic odontogenic tumor or Gorlin cyst is an uncommon lesion with a variable clinical behavior and considerable histopathologic diversity. The authors report a case of calcifying cystic odontogenic tumor that was being treated as a maxillary sinus mucocele. The possibility of mimicking numerous odontogenic and nonodontogenic lesions makes the calcifying cystic odontogenic tumor difficult for a clinical diagnosis.

Objective: This paper investigates the relationship between preoperative findings and short-term outcome in third molar surgery.

Study Design: A prospective study was carried out involving 80 patients who required 160 surgical extractions of impacted mandibular third molars between January 2009 and December 2010. All extractions were performed under local anesthesia by the same dental surgeon.

Comparison of digital systems and conventional dental film for the detection of approximal enamel caries.

Dentomaxillofac Radiol

October 2010

Department of Oral Medicine, Division of Oral Radiology, Pernambuco Dental School, Pernambuco University, UPE, Camamragibe, Recife, Brazil.

Objectives: The aims of this study were (1) to compare the accuracy of the detection of approximal enamel caries lesions using three intraoral storage phosphor plate digital systems and one conventional film-based radiographic system; and (2) to determine whether there is a correlation between the histological and radiographic measurements of enamel caries.

Methods: 160 approximal surfaces were radiographed under standardized conditions using three storage phosphor stimulable systems (DenOptix and Digora FMX with white and blue plates), and one film system (Insight film). 17 observers scored the images for the presence and depth of caries using a 4-point scale.

Objective: The aim of the study was to evaluate the patient s perception of the events during and after an osteogenic alveolar distraction (OAD) procedure

Materials And Methods: A total of fifty-five (55) osteogenic alveolar distraction (OAD) procedures were performed in fifty (50) patients, who then were asked to answer ten (10) questions related to the treatment. Six (6) questions made reference to predefined values in a Visual Analogical Scale (VAS), three (3) questions could be answered by a predetermined answer, and only one (1) question had a free answer.

Results: In 76% of cases, the patient s description of the sensation felt during the surgery was good and bearable; 84% of the patients didn t feel pain after surgery.

Purpose: An experimental model in rabbits was used to compare epineural suturing and fibrin adhesive anastomosis for facial nerve repair.

Materials And Methods: Thirty-four facial nerves from 17 rabbits were isolated, transected, and anastomosed, with an evaluation of their electrophysiologic and histologic parameters. The rabbits were divided into 2 groups of 5 and 12 animals, respectively: a 10-mm defect was made in the right facial nerve in the first group, with transection and epineural suturing of the left nerve, followed by death after 120 days.

Purpose: This study evaluated autogenous nerve grafts and expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (e-PTFE) and collagen tubes as conduits for the repair of continuity defects in the facial nerve of rabbits.

Materials And Methods: The buccal division of 24 facial nerves was isolated, transected, and separated 10 mm. The gap between the 2 nerve ends was then repaired with an autologous nerve graft or an e-PTFE or collagen conduit.
