Coastal wetlands contain very large carbon (C) stocks-termed as blue C-and their management has emerged as a promising nature-based solution for climate adaptation and mitigation. The interactions among sources, pools, and molecular compositions of soil organic C (SOC) within blue C ecosystems (BCEs) remain elusive. Here, we explore these interactions along an 18,000 km long coastal line of salt marshes, mangroves, and seagrasses in China.

Sterile inflammation has been increasingly recognized as a hallmark of non-infectious kidney diseases. Induction of pro-inflammatory cytokines in injured kidney tissue promotes infiltration of immune cells serving to clear cell debris and facilitate tissue repair. However, excessive or prolonged inflammatory response has been associated with immune-mediated tissue damage, nephron loss, and development of renal fibrosis.

Copper (Cu) is essential for brain development and function, yet its overload induces neuronal damage and contributes to neurodegeneration and other neurological disorders. Multiple studies demonstrated that Cu neurotoxicity is associated with mitochondrial dysfunction, routinely assessed by reduction of mitochondrial membrane potential. Nonetheless, the role of alterations of mitochondrial dynamics in brain mitochondrial dysfunction induced by Cu exposure is still debatable.

The process of viral infection spreading in tissues was influenced by various factors, including virus replication within host cells, transportation, and the immune response. Reaction-diffusion systems provided a suitable framework for examining this process. In this work, we studied a nonlocal reaction-diffusion system of equations that modeled the distribution of viruses based on their genotypes and their interaction with the immune response.

Undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma (UPS) is a highly malignant mesenchymal tumor that ranks as one of the most common types of soft tissue sarcoma. Even though chemotherapy increases the 5-year survival rate in UPS, high tumor heterogeneity frequently leads to chemotherapy resistance and consequently to recurrences. In this study, we characterized the cell composition and the transcriptional profile of UPS with resistance to chemotherapy at the single cell resolution.

Rice rhizosphere soil is a hotspot of microbial activity and a complex interplay between soil abiotic properties, microbial community and organic carbon (C). The iron (Fe) plaque formation in the rice rhizosphere promotes Fe-bound organic C formation and increases microbial activity. Yet, the overall impact of Fe on C storage via physicochemical stabilization and microbial mineralization of rhizodeposits (rhizo-C) and soil organic C (SOC) in the rice rhizosphere remain unclear.

Microbial carbon (C) use efficiency (CUE) describes the proportion of organic C used by microorganisms for anabolic processes, which increases with soil organic C (SOC) content on a global scale. However, it is unclear whether a similar relationship exists during natural vegetation restoration in terrestrial ecosystems. Here, we investigated the patterns of CUE along a 160-year vegetation restoration chronosequence (from farmland to climax forest) estimated by stoichiometric modeling; additionally, we examined the relationship between CUE and SOC content and combined these results with a meta-analysis.

One of the main components of innate defense against invasive parasites is oxidative stress, which is brought on by reactive oxygen species (ROS). On the other hand, oxidative stressors serve two purposes: free radicals aid in the elimination of pathogens, but they can also set off inflammation, which leads to tissue damage. Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) is a transcription factor that controls the expression of numerous genes involved in the body's defense against oxidative stress brought on by aging, inflammation, tissue damage, and other pathological consequences.
