HIF1α/PD-L1 axis mediates hypoxia-induced cell apoptosis and tumor progression in follicular thyroid carcinoma.

Onco Targets Ther

August 2019

Department of Thyroid and Neck Surgery, People's Hospital of Zhejiang Province, Hangzhou, Zhejiang 310006, People's Republic of China.

Background: Hypoxia-inducible factor 1α (HIF-1α) and programmed cell death-1 protein ligand 1 (PD-L1) are implicated in the metastasis and progression processes of multiple cancers. Hypoxia selectively elevates PD-L1 expression via HIF1α activation in several solid tumors; however, the regulatory effect of HIF1α on PD-L1 in the pathogenesis of follicular thyroid cancer (FTC) remains unclear. This study aims to investigate the regulatory effect of HIF1α on PD-L1 and their potential roles in FTC pathogenesis.

Orthodontic tooth movement is mainly regulated by the biomechanical responses of loaded periodontal ligament (PDL). We investigated the effective intervals of orthodontic force in pure maxillary canine intrusion and extrusion referring to PDL hydrostatic stress and logarithmic strain. Finite element analysis (FEA) models, including a maxillary canine, PDL and alveolar bone, were constructed based on computed tomography (CT) images of a patient.

The identification of safe and effective drugs that inhibit tumor invasion and metastasis is required to improve the clinical outcome of patients with colon cancer. The present study aimed to investigate the inhibitory effects and possible mechanisms of action of resveratrol against the invasion and metastasis of colon cancer. AKT1‑knockdown SW480 and SW620 colon cancer cells were used to detect the effects of resveratrol on cell invasion and metastasis, as well as changes in the expression of epithelial‑mesenchymal transition (EMT) markers and serine/threonine kinase (AKT)/glycogen synthase kinase (GSK)‑3β/Snail signaling pathway‑related molecules in vitro.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common malignant tumors affecting the digestive tract. Moreover, the invasion and metastasis of CRC are the main reason therapy is usually inefficient. Decreased intercellular adhesion and enhanced cell motility induced by epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) provide the basic conditions for the invasion and metastasis of the epithelial tumor cells of CRC.

To analyze the prevalence trend of (KP) infection in the Department of Burns of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine (hereinafter referred to as the author's department) from 2015 to 2017, and to screen out the independent risk factors for sepsis in burn patients with KP infection. The clinical and bacteriological data of burn patients with KP infection from January 1, 2015 to December 31, 2017 were collected from the author's department. The variation trend in infection rates of KP and carbapenems-resistant KP (CRKP) during the three years were statistically analyzed, and the data were processed with chi-square test.

In maxillofacial surgery, there is a significant need for the design and fabrication of porous scaffolds with customizable bionic structures and mechanical properties suitable for bone tissue engineering. In this paper, we characterize the porous Ti6Al4V implant, which is one of the most promising and attractive biomedical applications due to the similarity of its modulus to human bones. We describe the mechanical properties of this implant, which we suggest is capable of providing important biological functions for bone tissue regeneration.

Yes-associated protein at the intersection of liver cell fate determination.

World J Hepatol

April 2019

Department of Clinical Laboratory, The People's Hospital of Quzhou, Quzhou 324000, Zhejiang Province, China.

A recent publication highlights the importance of high yes-associated protein (YAP) expressing cells in liver regeneration following partial hepatectomy. Although the names of the cell populations described in these articles [hybrid periportal hepatocytes (HybHP) or epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-reprogrammed hepatocytes] are not identical, they all express high levels of YAP. We hypothesize that the HybHP and EMT-reprogrammed hepatocytes might be a similar cell population.

It has been reported that lncRNA POU3F3 was upregulated in esophageal squamous-cell carcinomas, indicating its role as an oncogene in this disease. However, the mechanism of its function and its involvement in other malignancies is unknown. In the present study we found that expression levels of lncRNA POU3F3 were higher in tumor tissues than in adjacent healthy tissues of triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) patients and were significantly and inversely correlated with levels of cleaved caspase 9 only in tumor tissues.

April 2019

Bone Marrow Transplantation Center, The First Affiliated Hospital, School of Medicine, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China; Institute of Hematology, Zhejiang University, China. Electronic address:

The interaction of multiple myeloma (MM) cells with macrophages (MΦs) contributes to the pathophysiology of MM. We previously showed that IL-32 is overexpressed in MM patients. The present study was designed to explore the clinical significance of IL-32 in MM and to further elucidate the mechanisms underlying the IL-32-mediated immune function of MΦs.

November 2017

Bone Marrow Transplantation Center, The First Affiliated Hospital, School of Medicine, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China.

Multiple myeloma (MM) is a malignant plasma disease closely associated with inflammation. In MM bone marrow microenvironment, bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) are the primary source of interleukin-6 (IL-6) secretion, which promotes the proliferation and progression of MM cells. However, it is still unknown how the microenvironment stimulates BMSCs to secrete IL-6.

Radiotherapy resistance is an enduring major setback in lung cancer therapy, and is responsible for a large proportion of treatment failures. In previous years, cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) has frequently been reported to promote tumor occurrence and development, suggesting a potential role in radiotherapy resistance. To investigate whether COX-2 inhibitors can be applied in radiosensitization, an MTT assay was performed to examine cell viability after X-ray radiation in the presence or absence of the specific COX-2 inhibitor Celecoxib.

July 2017

Department of Neurosurgery, Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University, School of Medicine, Hangzhou 310009, P.R. China.

Objective: This work aimed to investigate the anti-epileptic effects of valepotriate isolated from Jones and studied its possible mechanisms.

Methods: The anti-epileptic effects of valepotriate were studied using maximal electroshock-induced seizure (MES), pentylenetetrazole (PTZ)-induced epilepsy, and pentobarbital sodium-induced sleeping model in mice. The possible anti-epileptic mechanisms of valepotriate were investigated by analyzing the expressions of GABA, GABA, glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD65), Bcl-2, and caspase-3 in the brain using Western blot assay.
