Background: Papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) in clinically lymph node-negative (cN0) patients is prone toward lymph node metastasis. As a risk factor for tumor persistence and local recurrence, lateral lymph node metastasis (LLNM) is related to the number of central lymph node metastases (CLNMs).

Methods: We performed LLNM risk stratification based on the number of CLNMs for cN0 PTC patients who underwent thyroidectomy and lymph node dissection between January 2013 and December 2018.

The COVID-19 pandemic placed heavy burdens on emergency care and posed severe challenges to ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) treatment. This study aimed to investigate the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on mechanical reperfusion characteristics in STEMI undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PPCI) in a non-epicenter region. STEMI cases undergoing PPCI from January 23 to March 29 between 2019 and 2020 were retrospectively compared.

Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.

The etiology of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) may play an important role in the failure of noninvasive ventilation (NIV). To explore the association between ARDS etiology and risk of NIV failure. A multicenter prospective observational study was performed in 17 intensive care units in China from September 2017 to December 2019.

Background: Questions still remain about the safest and most effective route of administration for tranexamic acid (TXA) in lumbar interbody fusion. As such, the goal of this randomized clinical trial was to assess the efficacy and safety of topical TXA compared with intravenous TXA in lumbar interbody fusion.

Methods: This was a prospectively randomized trial that investigated the effectiveness and safety of the intravenous and topical administrations of TXA with regard to lumbar interbody fusion.

Background: Microsatellite instability (MSI) is one of the most important molecular characteristics of colorectal cancer (CRC), which mainly results from defective DNA mismatch repair (MMR). This study was performed to investigate the concordance between deficient MMR and MSI testing, and to evaluate the association of these two results with clinicopathological characteristics in Chinese CRC patients.

Methods: A total of 738 CRC patients were included.

Rationale: Gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) is one of the most common malignant mesenchymal tumors of the gastrointestinal tract. They generally arise from the fourth layer (muscularis propria) and rarely from the second or third layer. Although the manifestations of gastric stromal tumors are diverse, to our knowledge, there are only several cases of an extra-gastric stromal tumor in the literature appearing with a pedunculation.

Background: Numerous studies have shown that hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) without microvascular invasion (MVI) may have better outcomes. This study established a preoperative MVI risk nomogram mainly incorporating three related risk factors of MVI in BCLC 0/A HCC after surgery.

Methods: Independent predictors for the risk of MVI were investigated, and an MVI risk nomogram was established based on 60 patients in the training group who underwent curative hepatectomy for BCLC 0/A HCC and validated using a dataset in the validation group.

Thyroid hormone has important functions in the development and physiological function of the heart. The aim of this study was to determine whether 3,5,3'-Triiodothyronine (T3) can promote the proliferation of epicardial progenitor cells (EPCs) and to investigate the potential underlying mechanism. Our results showed that T3 significantly promoted the proliferation of EPCs in a concentration- and time-dependent manner.
