Recent progress in exosome research: isolation, characterization and clinical applications.

Exosomes, a kind of nano-vesicles released by various cell types, carry a variety of "cargos" including proteins, RNAs, DNAs and lipids. There is substantial evidence that exosomes are involved in intercellular communication by exchanging "cargos" among cells and play important roles in cancer development. Because of the different expressions of "cargos" carried by exosomes in biological fluids under physiological and pathological conditions, exosomes have the potential as a minimally invasive method of liquid biopsy for cancer diagnosis and prognosis.

A 3-month comparison study of subjective and objective visual quality of small incision lenticule extraction and transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy in patients with low and moderate myopia.

Aim: To compare the subjective and objective visual quality between small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) and transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy (tPRK) in patients with low and moderate myopia.

Methods: Patients undertaking SMILE or tPRK for the correction of low and moderate myopia were consecutively recruited in this prospective cohort study with a 3-month follow-up period. Objective evaluation [visual acuity test, manifest refraction, wavefront aberrations, the total cut-off value of the total modulation transfer function (MTF), and Strehl ratio (SR)] and subjective evaluation of visual quality (quality-of-life questionnaire) were conducted before surgery and at days 1, 7, 30, and 90 after surgery.

Effect of naringenin on the anti-inflammatory, vascularization, and osteogenesis differentiation of human periodontal ligament stem cells via the stromal cell-derived factor 1/C-X-C motif chemokine receptor 4 signaling axis stimulated by lipopolysaccharide.

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate how naringenin (Nar) affected the anti-inflammatory, vascula-rization, and osteogenesis differentiation of human periodontal ligament stem cells (hPDLSCs) stimulated by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and to preliminarily explore the underlying mechanism.

Methods: Cell-counting kit-8 (CCK8), cell scratch test, and Transwell assay were used to investigate the proliferation and migratory capabilities of hPDLSCs. Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) staining, alizarin red staining, lumen-formation assay, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, quantitative timed polymerase chain reaction, and Western blot were used to measure the expression of osteopontin (OPN), Runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2), vascular endothlial growth factor (VEGF), basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), von Willebrand factor (vWF), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and interleukin (IL)-6.

Longer interval between neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy and surgery is associated with improved pathological response, but does not accurately estimate survival in patients with resectable esophageal cancer.

Neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) has been shown to reduce tumor burden and achieve tumor regression in patients with esophageal cancer (ESC). However, the most beneficial time interval between the administration of nCRT and surgery remains unclear. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to explore the association of the duration of time between nCRT and surgery with the prognosis of patients with ESC.

Chlorogenic Acid Alleviates Hepatic Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury by Inhibiting Oxidative Stress, Inflammation, and Mitochondria-Mediated Apoptosis In Vivo and In Vitro.

Hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury (HIRI) is the main reason for organ failure following liver surgery; however, its underlying causes are complex, and include oxidative stress, sterile inflammatory, and mitochondrial damage. Unfortunately, treatments for HIRI are based on supportive therapy, and no specific drugs or methods are currently available. Chlorogenic acid (CGA) is a dietary polyphenol with a wide range of pharmacological effects and it has a protective effect on HIRI; however, its specific mechanism remains unclear.

Efficacy of Melatonin for Insomnia in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Meta-analysis.

Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of melatonin in treating insomnia in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

Methods: Comprehensive searches were conducted in the PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science databases from their inception to April 20, 2022. Data were extracted and assessed for quality by two researchers.

Meta-analysis of cancer risk among end stage renal disease undergoing maintenance dialysis.

Currently, there is no consensus on whether maintenance dialysis increases cancer risk in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Therefore, this study was to systematically evaluate the risk of cancer among ESRD patients undergoing maintenance dialysis. Related studies on the impact of maintenance dialysis on cancer risk were retrieved from PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and other databases from their respective inceptions to 19 February 2021.

As a valuable biomarker for various tumor, sensitive and reliable quantitative determination of microRNA (miRNA) is crucial for both disease diagnosis and cancer treatment. Herein, we depict a novel simple and sensitive miRNA detection approach by exploiting an elegantly designed target recognition initiated self-dissociation based DNA nanomachine. In this nanomachine, target recognition assists the formation of active DNAzyme secondary conformation, and the active DNAzyme generates a nicking site in H probe, initiating the self-assembly of H probe.

Genotype-phenotype association of PITX2 and FOXC1 in Axenfeld-Rieger syndrome.

PITX2 and FOXC1 are the most common pathogenic genes associated with Axenfeld-Rieger syndrome (ARS). In this study, we aimed to explore the variation spectrum of PITX2 and FOXC1 and their associated phenotype based on data from our study and previously reported literatures. Whole exome sequencing was performed on eight probands in our study.

Acne caused by ziprasidone in a young patient with bipolar disorder: A case report.

Background: Ziprasidone is a second-generation antipsychotic drug commonly used to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Acne is a common inflammatory disease of sebaceous glands in adolescents that is often co-morbid with anxiety and depression, which may reduce treatment compliance. Through unknown mechanisms, ziprasidone may cause a range of inflammatory responses.

Case report: Two siblings with neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease exhibiting distinct clinicoradiological findings.

Neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease (NIID) is a rare neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the presence of eosinophilic hyaline intranuclear inclusions. Owing to its widely varying clinical manifestations, NIID is frequently misdiagnosed or overlooked. However, a characteristic high-intensity corticomedullary junction signal on diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) is often indicative of NIID.

Application of regional citrate anticoagulation in patients at high risk of bleeding during intermittent hemodialysis: a prospective multicenter randomized controlled trial.

Objectives: Safe and effective anticoagulation is essential for hemodialysis patients who are at high risk of bleeding. The purpose of this trial is to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of two-stage regional citrate anticoagulation (RCA) combined with sequential anticoagulation and standard calcium-containing dialysate in intermittent hemodialysis (IHD) treatment.

Methods: Patients at high risk of bleeding who underwent IHD from September 2019 to May 2021 were prospectively enrolled in 13 blood purification centers of nephrology departments, and were randomly divided into RCA group and saline flushing group.

Here, we explored the relationship between lymphatic metastasis and CEA family member 5 (CEACAM5), including its possible regulatory role in HNSCC. The levels of CEACAM5 in tissues from patients with HNSCC, with and without LN metastases, were assessed by transcriptome sequencing.

The relationship between psychological resilience, neuroticism, attentional bias, and depressive symptoms in college Chinese students.

In recent years, the incidence of depressive symptoms among Chinese college students has been increasing. Studies have shown that depressive symptoms are related to a variety of psychosocial factors, among which neuroticism, resilience, and attention bias are most notably related, but the correlation among the three is not clear. This study aimed to investigate the influence mechanisms of different degrees of resilience, attentional bias, and neuroticism in the formation of depressive symptoms.

Nardosinone is a bioactive compound with a sesquiterpenoid structure isolated from Nardostachys jatamansi. The compound has shown treatment effects against skeletal disorders. In the current study, the effects of nardosinone on osteoarthritis (OA) were first assessed and the mechanism underlying the effects was explored by detecting changes in the miR-218-5p/NUMB axis.
