Objective: In this study, we investigated the relationship between serum ischemic modified albumin (IMA) levels and other hematologic features and middle cerebral artery (MCA) severe stenosis/occlusion in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients.

Methods: The levels of serum IMA and Albumin (ALB) of 169 AIS patients were measured, and the ratio of IMA to albumin (IMAR) and the albumin-adjusted ischemia-modified albumin index (IMA index) were calculated. Different combinations of other hematologic changes and clinical features of the patients were analyzed.

Neurotransmitter metabolism plays a critical role in the pathophysiology of major depressive disorder (MDD). However, whether the neurotransmitter metabolism in adolescent MDD is differentiated from adult MDD is still elusive. In the current study, plasma concentrations of monoamine and amino acid neurotransmitters as well as their metabolites, including tryptophan (TRP), kynurenine (KYN), kynurenic acid (KYNA), serotonin (5-HT), 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA), dopamine (DA), 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC), homovanillic acid (HVA), norepinephrine (NE), vanillylmandelic acid (VMA), 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylglycol (MHPG), glutamine (GLN), glutamate (GLU) and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), were measured and compared in two cohorts of subjects (adult cohort: 31 first-episode MDD vs.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates how low calcium levels (hypocalcaemia) affect the prognosis of patients with acute pulmonary thromboembolism (PTE), aiming to create a new predictive model for patient outcomes.
  • - Data was collected from 4,196 PTE patients across 12 hospitals in China between 2010 and 2020, showing that low calcium levels are linked to higher mid- and long-term mortality rates.
  • - The new PUMCH rule, which incorporates hypocalcaemia, outperforms existing models (PESI and sPESI) in specificity while maintaining similar sensitivity, suggesting it may be a more effective tool for assessing prognosis in PTE patients.

Antipsychotic effects seem to decrease in relapsed schizophrenia patients and the underlying mechanisms remain to be elucidated. Based on the essential role of polyunsaturated fatty acids in brain function and the treatment of schizophrenia, we hypothesize that disordered fatty acid metabolism may contribute to treatment resistance in multi-episode patients. We analyzed the erythrocyte membrane fatty acids in 327 schizophrenia patients under various episodes (numbers of patients: first-episode drug naïve 89; 2-3 episodes 110; 4-6 episodes 80; over 6 episodes 48) and 159 age- and gender-matched healthy controls.

Purpose: To determine the levels of serum HDL-associated apolipoproteins (apoM and apoC) and HDL-binding receptor (scavenger receptor BI, SR-BI) in patients with gram-negative bacteria sepsis (G-sepsis) and to evaluate the value of lipoproteins in the diagnosis, severity and prognosis of G-sepsis.

Patients And Methods: A total of 128 patients with sepsis, 40 patients with system inflammatory reaction syndrome (SIRS) and 40 healthy subjects were enrolled in the Second People's Hospital of Hunan Province from September 2019 to September 2020. The levels and the correlation of lipoproteins were detected and dynamically monitored by enzyme-linked adsorption method, ROC curve for the diagnostic, severity and prognostic value of lipoproteins in G-sepsis.

Rationale: It is controversial whether dyslipidemia induced by antipsychotics in schizophrenia patients is due to weight gain or direct effects of drug treatment. However, recent evidence showed that olanzapine can cause acute dyslipidemia independent of weight change, and the underlying mechanism remains unclear.

Objective: To study the role of proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) in olanzapine-induced dyslipidemia, we analyzed in schizophrenic patients and in experimental models involving mice and cells to understand the mechanism.

Treatment for mild stroke remains an open question. We aim to develop a decision support tool based on machine learning (ML) algorithms, called DAMS (Disability After Mild Stroke), to identify mild stroke patients who would be at high risk of post-stroke disability (PSD) if they only received medical therapy and, more importantly, to aid neurologists in making individual clinical decisions in emergency contexts. Ischemic stroke patients were prospectively recorded in the National Advanced Stroke Center of Nanjing First Hospital (China) between July 2016 and September 2020.

People with diabetes frequently have elevated diabetes distress. Although mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) therapy has been shown effective in reducing diabetes distress, it has only been delivered by psychologists or a multidisciplinary team with an attrition rate of up to 39%, which limits its dissemination to a broader audience. This study was aimed to pilot evaluate the feasibility of a nurse-led MBSR therapy and explore its potential efficacy amongst people with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Neurosurg Rev

April 2022

Department of Hepatobiliary and Pancreas Surgery, The First Affiliated Hospital, Hengyang Medical School, University of South China, Hengyang, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Intracranial aneurysms (IAs) are a significant health issue, and while endovascular treatment (EVT) is a common management strategy, there's a notable risk of recurrence leading to serious complications.
  • The study aimed to create and evaluate machine learning (ML) models to predict the recurrence risk of IAs within 6 months after EVT, utilizing data from patients treated at Hunan Provincial People's Hospital from 2016 to 2019.
  • Among five developed ML models, the gradient boosting decision tree (GBDT) model outperformed the others, achieving an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.842, indicating it can effectively predict the risk of recurrence in this patient population.
