Background: Inflammation plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease (PD). However, the correlation between peripheral inflammatory markers and the severity of PD remains unclear.

Methods: The following items in plasma were collected for assessment among patients with PD ( = 303) and healthy controls (HCs;  = 303) were assessed for the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR) and neutrophil-to-high-density-lipoprotein ratio (NHR) in plasma, and neuropsychological assessments were performed for all patients with PD.

Background: Current methods utilizing preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based radiomics for assessing lymphovascular invasion (LVI) in patients with early-stage breast cancer lack precision, limiting the options for surgical planning.

Purpose: This study aimed to develop a sophisticated deep learning framework called "Prior Clinico-Radiological Features Informed Multi-Modal MR Images Convolutional Neural Network (PCMM-Net)" to improve the accuracy of LVI prediction in breast cancer. By incorporating multiparameter MRI and prior clinical knowledge, PCMM-Net should enhance the precision of LVI assessment.

Three-dimensional analysis of mandibular morphology asymmetry and temporomandibular joint position in patients with unilateral Brodie bite.

Orthod Craniofac Res

June 2024

Department of Prosthodontics and Orthodontics, Center of Stomatology, Xiangya Hospital, Central South University, Changsha, Hunan, China.

Objective: Previous studies have shown unilateral posterior crossbite is associated with mandibular asymmetry in morphology and position. However, it remains unclear whether unilateral Brodie bite plays a similar role in mandibular development. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the morphological and positional symmetry of mandibles in patients with unilateral Brodie bite by three-dimensional anaylsis.

Acad Radiol

May 2024

Department of Radiology, The second People's Hospital of Hunan Province, Brain Hospital of Hunan Province, Changsha, 410007, Hunan, China (W.C.). Electronic address:

Rationale And Objectives: Treatment strategies for invasive breast cancer require accurate lymphovascular invasion (LVI) predictions. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of delta radiomics based on dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) for assessing LVI and develop a nomogram to aid treatment decisions.

Materials And Methods: Overall, 293 patients with resectable invasive breast cancer underwent preoperative DCE-MRI.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is one of the most common psychiatric disorders worldwide with high recurrence rate. Identifying MDD patients, particularly those with recurrent episodes with resting-state fMRI, may reveal the relationship between MDD and brain function. We proposed a Transformer-Encoder model, which utilized functional connectivity extracted from large-scale multisite rs-fMRI datasets to classify MDD and HC.

Specific memory processes and emotional aberrations in depression can be attributed to the different dorsal-ventral regions of the hippocampus. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the differential functions of the dorsal hippocampus (dHip) and ventral hippocampus (vHip) remain unclear. As Sonic Hedgehog (Shh) is involved in the dorsal-ventral patterning of the neural tube and its signaling is dysregulated by chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS), we investigated its role in influencing the differential functions of the dHip and vHip.

Objective: To observe the levels of soluble programmed cell death protein 1 (sPD-1) and soluble programmed cell death ligand 1 (sPD-L1) in peripheral blood of lymphoma patients, and reveal their clinical significances.

Methods: The peripheral blood specimens and clinical data of 64 newly diagnosed lymphoma patients and 30 healthy volunteers were collected. The levels of sPD-1 and sPD-L1 were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and their correlations with clinical characteristics of the patients including pathological type, stage, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) level, T cell subsets were analyzed.

Objective: Hypoxia, which can considerably affect the tumor microenvironment, hinders the use of immunotherapy in bladder cancer (BLCA). Therefore, we aimed to identify reliable hypoxia-related biomarkers to guide clinical immunotherapy in BLCA.

Methods: Using data downloaded from TCGA-BLCA cohort, we determined BLCA subtypes which divide 408 samples into different subtypes.

The accurate diagnosis of HFpEF is still challenging and controversial. In this study, we used 3D-DHM technology to compare the differences of cardiac structure and function between HFpEF patients and healthy controls, as well as the differences of two-dimensional and three-dimensional cardiac function in HFpEF patients. Echocardiography with 3D-DHM and conventional two-dimensional (2D) methods were applied to measure the volume and function parameters of left atrium and ventricle of patients with HFpEF and healthy controls.

Article Synopsis
  • This study focused on developing nomogram models to predict unfavorable outcomes in patients with basilar artery occlusion (BAO) who underwent mechanical thrombectomy (MT).
  • Researchers analyzed data from 127 BAO patients, ultimately including 117 in their findings, and created both preoperative and postoperative models with strong predictive capabilities.
  • The models identified key predictors for unfavorable outcomes, such as previous stroke and NIHSS scores, and aim to enhance clinical decision-making for patient selection and post-stroke management.

A novel three-step DNA extraction method for mixed bloodstains.

Electrophoresis

March 2024

Department of Forensic genetics, Brain Hospital of Hunan Province, The Second People's Hospital of Hunan Province, Changsha, P. R. China.

Mixed DNA samples from at least two contributors can be present at a crime scene, which could be the most crucial piece of genetic evidence. The mixed stains in sexual assault cases are typically separated using differential lysis procedures (a two-step method). Blood mixed stains, however, are usually difficult to separate.

Background: The comorbidity between diabetes mellitus and depression was revealed, and diabetes mellitus increased the prevalence of depressive disorder, which ranked 13th in the leading causes of disability-adjusted life-years. Insulin resistance, which is common in diabetes mellitus, has increased the risk of depressive symptoms in both humans and animals. However, the mechanisms behind the comorbidity are multi-factorial and complicated.

Finite element analysis comparison of Type 42A2 fracture fixed with external titanium alloy locking plate and traditional external fixation frame.

J Orthop Surg Res

October 2023

Department of Orthopaedic Medicine Center, Brain Hospital of Hunan Provincial (The Second People's Hospital of Hunan Province), Clinical Medical College of Hunan University of Chinese Medicine, Changsha, 410007, China.

Background: At present, not all Type AO/OTA 42A2 open fractures can be treated by external fixation brackets, not to mention the inconvenience of this technique in clinical practice. External titanium alloy locking plates, which are lightweight and easy-to-operate, can be used as an alternative treatment option for such patients. However, there are few reports of finite element biomechanical analysis on the titanium alloy locking plates and fixation brackets being placed on the medial side of the tibial fracture.
