Background: Images from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are crucial unstructured data for prognostic evaluation in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). We developed and validated a prognostic system based on the MRI features and clinical data of locoregionally advanced NPC (LA-NPC) patients to distinguish low-risk patients with LA-NPC for whom concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) is sufficient.

Methods: This multicenter, retrospective study included 3444 patients with LA-NPC from January 1, 2010, to January 31, 2017.

Background: Percutaneous endoscopic interlaminar discectomy (PEID) is a widely used minimally invasive procedure that shows satisfying outcomes for the treatment of L5-S1 and even L4-5 disc herniation. PEID can be divided into direct and indirect approaches according to the established method of the working channel. The direct approach mainly uses the puncture needle directly through the intervertebral space into the intervertebral disc under indirect vision and insertion of the guidewire into the puncture needle to guide the dilator and into the working channel to retract the ligamentum flavum, dural sac, and nerve roots.

A Nested Asymmetric PCR Melting Curve Assay for One-Step Genotyping of Nondeletional α-Thalassemia Mutations.

J Mol Diagn

June 2020

Department of Medical Genetics, School of Basic Medical Sciences, Southern Medical University, Guangzhou, People's Republic of China. Electronic address:

A rapid DNA-based assay is essential for clinical diagnosis and mass screening in thalassemia-prevention programs. Because of high homology and guanine-cytosine-rich and complex second structure of α-globin genes, it is rather difficult to develop a feasible and simple method for α-thalassemia genotyping. In this study, a strategy of nested asymmetric PCR melting curve analysis was designed to tackle these factors and ensure sensitivity and accuracy.

Ameloblastoma (AM) is a benign but locally aggressive tumor with high recurrences. Currently, underlying pathophysiology remains elusive, and radical surgery remains the most definitive treatment with severe morbidities. We have recently reported that AM harbors a subpopulation of tumor epithelial stem-like cells (AM-EpiSCs).

What Is Already Known On This Topic?: Asbestos is classified as a Class I Carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) because exposure causes mesothelioma and lung cancer in addition to asbestosis and plaques. So far, asbestos has been banned in 67 countries, but chrysotile, a commonly encountered form of asbestos, is still widely used in China and most developing countries. Most asbestos-caused cancers are not reported, recorded, and compensated in many countries.

July 2020

State Key Laboratory of Oncology in South China, Collaborative Innovation Center of Cancer Medicine, Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center, Guangzhou, P.R. China.

Purpose: Adults with T-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma (T-LBL) generally benefit from treatment with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL)-like regimens, but approximately 40% will relapse after such treatment. We evaluated the value of CpG methylation in predicting relapse for adults with T-LBL treated with ALL-like regimens.

Experimental Design: A total of 549 adults with T-LBL from 27 medical centers were included in the analysis.

Mesenchymal stem/stromal cells-derived IL-6 promotes nasopharyngeal carcinoma growth and resistance to cisplatin via upregulating CD73 expression.

J Cancer

February 2020

Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Medical Molecular Diagnostics, Dongguan Key Laboratory of Medical Bioactive Molecular Developmental and Translational Research, Guangdong Medical University, Dongguan 523808, China.

Previous studies have implicated the important role of mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) within tumor microenvironment (TME) in the pathogenesis and progression of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), but the potential mechanisms are still unclear. Herein, we showed that an elevated IL-6 level was positively correlated with elevated expression of CD73 in TME of NPC. NPC specimens with an IL-6CD73 phenotype showed higher expression levels of gp80, gp130, p-STAT3, MMP-9 and α-SMA, and clinically, a poorer prognosis than those with an IL-6CD73 phenotype.

A gene-expression-based signature predicts survival in adults with T-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma: a multicenter study.

Leukemia

September 2020

State Key Laboratory of Oncology in South China, Collaborative Innovation Center of Cancer Medicine, Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center, Guangzhou, PR China.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers developed a gene-expression classifier to predict survival in patients with T-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma (T-LBL), identifying 43 key mRNAs after comparing gene profiles of progressive and progression-free cases.
  • The classifier, based on 11 specific genes, was shown to significantly lower progression-free survival, disease-free survival, and overall survival rates for high-risk patients in a training cohort of 169 individuals.
  • A prognostic nomogram incorporating the classifier and other factors further improved prediction accuracy for treatment outcomes, indicating that patients with higher scores respond better to the BFM treatment protocol.

Triple-high expression of phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN), estrogen receptor (ER) and progesterone receptor (PR) may predict favorable prognosis for patients with Type I endometrial carcinoma.

J Cancer

January 2020

Dongguan Key Laboratory of Medical Bioactive Molecular Developmental and Translational Research, Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Medical Molecular Diagnostics, Guangdong Medical University, Dongguan, Guangdong 523808, China.

Endometrial carcinoma (EC) is the most common malignant tumors in female derived from the endometrial epithelium. Several previous studies have described estrogen receptors (ER), progesterone Receptor (PR) and phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) are associated with clinicopathological factors and prognosis in EC patients. However, during EC patients follow-up, we found that some EC patients with down-regulation of PTEN, but up-regulation of ER or PR , and some EC patients with down-regulation of ER or PR, but up-regulation of PTEN also had a poor prognosis.
