Article Synopsis
  • C-arm fluoroscopy is crucial for accurately visualizing the irregular anatomical structures during surgeries involving the femoral neck, as traditional imaging techniques are often inadequate.
  • The study analyzed the femoral neck's anatomy by measuring specific angles related to its surfaces and tested optimal C-arm angles for better fluoroscopic imaging.
  • Results indicated the femoral neck's complex shape and determined the best angles for visualizing various surfaces, with an emphasis on the effectiveness of Kirschner wires in imaging during procedures.

  • After percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for acute STEMI, inflammation can increase the risk of no-reflow due to microvascular obstruction, but the relationship with inflammatory factors remains debated.
  • A meta-analysis was performed by reviewing studies from various databases, focusing on case-control and cohort studies, while excluding irrelevant publications and data issues.
  • Findings revealed that elevated levels of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, platelet/lymphocyte ratio, leukocyte count, neutrophil count, and increased red blood cell volume width are significantly linked to the risk of no-reflow, offering useful information for clinicians.

  • This study evaluated the effectiveness and safety of using recombinant human brain natriuretic peptide (rhBNP) combined with sacubitril/valsartan in elderly patients with acute heart failure (AHF) versus standard treatments.
  • A total of 136 patients over 60 years old were divided into three groups: standard treatment, rhBNP treatment, and sequential treatment with rhBNP followed by sacubitril/valsartan.
  • Results showed that the sequential treatment group had better symptom relief, shorter hospital stays, improved cardiac function, and a lower rate of heart failure readmissions compared to the other groups, with no deaths reported.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted to evaluate the safety of antiplatelet therapy in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients who have low platelet counts (thrombocytopenia), as there is limited research on this topic.
  • The research involved analyzing data from 169,423 AIS patients, ultimately focusing on 2,808 noncardioembolic patients with thrombocytopenia, comparing outcomes between those receiving antiplatelet therapy and those who did not.
  • Results showed that antiplatelet therapy did not significantly increase the risk of severe bleeding and was associated with better functional outcomes at discharge and a potential trend towards lower mortality after one year.

Role of frailty in predicting outcomes after stroke: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Front Psychiatry

July 2024

Department of Neurology, People's Hospital of Anji, Anji County, Huzhou, Zhejiang, China.

Background: Stroke is considered the second most common cause of death and the third leading cause of disability worldwide. Frailty, characterized by increased vulnerability to stressors, is emerging as a key factor affecting outcomes in older adults and stroke patients. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of frailty in acute stroke patients and assess its association with mortality and poor functional outcome.

Malnutrition is a common issue in critically ill patients, often stemming from illness, injury, or surgery. Prolonged fasting leads to intestinal issues, emphasizing the importance of early enteral nutrition, specifically through jejunal nutrition. While enteral nutrition is crucial, complications with current techniques exist.

Background: The primary objective was to examine the association between the lactate/albumin ratio (LAR) and the prognosis of patients with acute kidney injury (AKI) undergoing continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT).

Methods: Utilizing the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care IV (MIMIC-IV, v2.0) database, we categorized 703 adult AKI patients undergoing CRRT into survival and non-survival groups based on 28-day mortality.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how miR-145-5p regulates ABRACL and its effects on the proliferation, migration, and invasion of esophageal carcinoma (EC) cells.
  • Methods used include gene expression analysis from TCGA, various bioinformatics tools for target prediction, and functional assays to assess the behavior of EC cells regarding miR-145-5p and ABRACL.
  • Results show that lower levels of miR-145-5p and higher levels of ABRACL are present in EC, with miR-145-5p negatively regulating ABRACL and thus influencing cancer cell behaviors, indicating its potential as a therapeutic target in EC treatment.
