Despite significant research, the benefits and risks of cannabis for medical purposes remain elusive. However, there is one factor about the substance that is clear - there is a dearth of knowledge about attitudes and beliefs toward its use in Russia where the substance in any form is strictly prohibited. The aim of this study was to examine the impact of affiliation with religion on university student attitudes and beliefs toward cannabis for medical conditions.

We performed off-pump ascending-to-descending aortic grafting with the debranching of left carotid and subclavian arteries and total aortic arch transection in three patients. We have called this technique "Penza's Surgical Maneuver" and propose it for a safe surgery in cases where the aortic arch, the aortic isthmus, the beginning segment of the descending aorta, the esophagus, and a lung are diseased.

The origin of animals is one of the most intensely studied evolutionary events, and our understanding of this transition was greatly advanced by analyses of unicellular relatives of animals, which have shown many "animal-specific" genes actually arose in protistan ancestors long before the emergence of animals [1-3]. These genes have complex distributions, and the protists have diverse lifestyles, so understanding their evolutionary significance requires both a robust phylogeny of animal relatives and a detailed understanding of their biology [4, 5]. But discoveries of new animal-related lineages are rare and historically biased to bacteriovores and parasites.

Background: Cases of polydactyly in natural populations of amphibians have attracted great interest from biologists. At the end of the 1940s, the French biologist Jean Rostand discovered a polymorphic syndrome in some water frog (Anura: Pelophylax) populations that included polydactyly and some severe morphological anomalies (he called it 'anomaly P'). The cause of this anomaly remains unknown for 70 years.

The aim of this study was to investigate the possible associations between depression, height and body mass index (BMI) in the adolescent and adult population of Penza city and oblast, Russia. The study included 554 adults aged 16-89 years. The presence and severity of depression was evaluated using Beck's Depression Inventory (BDI-II).

Thirty-year studies of populations of eight shrew species in the Middle Yenisei taiga have shown that at the late 20th century the population dynamics had a pronounced cyclic character, but in the 21st century cyclic dynamics changed with fluctuating one. The analysis of the dependence of the animal body weight on the population density have revealed that under cyclic dynamics at the peaks of the population, the animal's body weight is significantly higher than that at population decline, i.e.

Currently, researchers and clinicians are most interested in the problem of determining the viable myocardium zone. However, only the necrosis zone area directly correlates with the patients prognosis and determines the heart pathological remodeling processes.

The function of left ventricular (LV) contractility consists of two aspects, the force of myocardial contraction, which provides a sufficient pressure gradient to open the heart valves, and deformation, which determines the actual cardiac output [1, 2]. The relationship between the characteristics of LV deformation and LV volume parameters remains poorly understood. The LV work may reflect the dependence between the volume and deformation characteristics of the left ventricle.

In this study, the architecture of a multilayer metallic material of iron-carbon alloys with an internal protector was developed based on theoretical studies. The operability of the proposed architecture was experimentally verified using gravimetry and electrochemical analysis. The internal position of the protector enabled the modification of the mechanism of corrosion.

Background: The origin of animals from their unicellular ancestor was one of the most important events in evolutionary history, but the nature and the order of events leading up to the emergence of multicellular animals are still highly uncertain. The diversity and biology of unicellular relatives of animals have strongly informed our understanding of the transition from single-celled organisms to the multicellular Metazoa. Here, we analyze the cellular structures and complex life cycles of the novel unicellular holozoans Pigoraptor and Syssomonas (Opisthokonta), and their implications for the origin of animals.

Background: The actual task of electrocardiographic examinations is to increase the reliability of diagnosing the condition of the heart. Within the framework of this task, an important direction is the solution of the inverse problem of electrocardiography, based on the processing of electrocardiographic signals of multichannel cardio leads at known electrode coordinates in these leads (Titomir et al. Noninvasiv electrocardiotopography, 2003), (Macfarlane et al.

The oxidative modification of human hemoglobin (Hb) treated with hydrogen peroxide was investigated. Using the mass spectrometry method, the oxidized amino acid residues of the hemoglobin molecule were detected: αTrp14, αTyr24, αArg31, αMet32, αTyr42, αHis45, αHis72, αMet76, αPro77, αLys90, αCys104, αTyr140, βHis2, βTrp15, βTrp37, βMet55, βCys93, βCys112, βTyr130, βLys144, and βHis146. The antioxidant potential of the Hb molecule in the intracellular space and in the blood plasma is discussed.

Plant biofortification with selenium in interaction with the application of an arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF)-based formulate, with the goal of enhancing Se bioavailability, is beneficial for the development of the environmentally friendly production of functional food with a high content of this microelement. Research was carried out in order to assess the effects of an AMF-based formulate and a non-inoculated control in factorial combination with two selenium treatments with an organic (selenocystine) or inorganic form (sodium selenate) and a non-treated control on the yield, quality, antioxidant properties, and elemental composition of shallot ( L. group).

Glacial-interglacial variations in CO and methane in polar ice cores have been attributed, in part, to changes in global wetland extent, but the wetland distribution before the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM, 21 ka to 18 ka) remains virtually unknown. We present a study of global peatland extent and carbon (C) stocks through the last glacial cycle (130 ka to present) using a newly compiled database of 1,063 detailed stratigraphic records of peat deposits buried by mineral sediments, as well as a global peatland model. Quantitative agreement between modeling and observations shows extensive peat accumulation before the LGM in northern latitudes (>40°N), particularly during warmer periods including the last interglacial (130 ka to 116 ka, MIS 5e) and the interstadial (57 ka to 29 ka, MIS 3).

Distribution area and taxonomic borders within the species complex Spermophilus erythrogenys sensu lato remain questionable. Early evidence suggests that red-cheeked ground squirrels of Southeast Kazakhstan are remarkably different in terms of the acoustic structure of their alarm calls from the red-cheeked ground squirrels of the Kurgan region in Russia. In this study, we analyzed the differences in the acoustic structure of the alarm call and mitochondrial DNA (complete control region, 1005-1006 bp and complete cytochrome b gene, 1140 bp) in 3 populations of red-cheeked ground squirrels (Tara, Altyn-Emel and Balkhash), all located within areas isolated by geographical barriers in Southeast Kazakhstan.

Importantly, it does not depend on a scanning angle and allows one to record the movement of speckles in 2D mode in any direction, unlike tissue Doppler imaging. This examination is non-invasive, safe for patients, and economically more beneficial in comparison with other modern methods of assessing heart contractility: MRI and scintigraphy.

Using an electron microscope method, the mechanism of the layers' corrosive destruction has been experimentally substantiated. The authors have suggested chemical and electrochemical methods of accelerated corrosion tests allowing for determining the corrosion destruction rate.

For the first time, free-living ciliates were studied in sediments from a variety of habitats in the Kara Sea (the Arctic Ocean). Ciliates were found in a wide range of environmental conditions (from the intertidal zone up to depths of 554m, from salinities ranging from 0 to 34psu, and from coarse sands and gravel to muddy sediments), with total abundances varying from 1 to 127ind/cm. Altogether, 114 species were identified, most of which were widely distributed and were previously reported from other Arctic regions.
