Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is a strain of coronavirus family, which was initially found in China in late 2019 and subsequently spread to rest of the world. COVID-19 has led to physical and mental health complications since its onset. In addition to the pandemic-associated social stresses, biological complications include direct viral encephalitis, autoimmune-mediated responses, medication side effects, hypoxic brain injury, and delirium, which can collectively cause varied presentations of neuropsychiatric symptoms.

With little to no data supporting or contradicting this unique scenario, in addition to the varying viewpoints expressed by the different specialists, our multidisciplinary transplant committee encountered a difficult decision of whether to approve a candidate with RA for a living kidney donation or not. As a result, we carried out a careful literature review addressing aspects of recipients' outcomes following kidney transplants from a living donor with RA, especially when the recipient has AAV, living donor's short- and long-term outcomes post kidney donation, renal disease in AAV and RA, and maintenance of disease remission.

The new era of digitalized knowledge and information technology (IT) has improved efficiency in all medical fields, and digital health solutions are becoming the norm. There has also been an upsurge in utilizing digital solutions during the COVID-19 pandemic to address the unmet mental healthcare needs, especially for those unable to afford in-person office-based therapy sessions or those living in remote rural areas with limited access to mental healthcare providers. Despite these benefits, there are significant concerns regarding the widespread use of such technologies in the healthcare system.

The composition of the maternal vaginal microbiome influences the duration of pregnancy, onset of labor, and even neonatal outcomes. Maternal microbiome research in sub-Saharan Africa has focused on non-pregnant and postpartum composition of the vaginal microbiome. Here we aimed to illustrate the relationship between the vaginal microbiome of 99 laboring Ugandan women and intrapartum fever using routine microbiology and 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing from two hypervariable regions (V1-V2 and V3-V4).

MPZL3 is a nuclear-encoded, mitochondrially localized, immunoglobulin-like V-type protein that functions as a key regulator of epithelial cell differentiation, lipid metabolism, ROS production, glycemic control, and energy expenditure. Recently, MPZL3 has surfaced as an important modulator of sebaceous gland function and of hair follicle cycling, an organ transformation process that is also governed by peripheral clock gene activity and PPARγ. Given the phenotype similarities and differences between Mpzl3 and Pparγ knockout mice, we propose that MPZL3 serves as a signaling hub that is regulated by core clock gene products and/or PPARγ to translate signals from these nuclear transcription factors to the mitochondria to modulate circadian and metabolic regulation.

The COVID-19 pandemic is a public health crisis that continues to impact individuals worldwide. While children may be less susceptible to severe medical complications, they are nonetheless vulnerable to stress and anxiety associated with the pandemic. However, current understanding of psychological functioning and potential strategies to mitigate distress amid a pandemic is naturally limited.

This review discusses the current testing methodologies for COVID-19 diagnosis and explores next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 and monitoring phylogenetic evolution in the current COVID-19 pandemic. The review addresses the development, fundamentals, assay quality control and bioinformatics processing of the NGS data. This article provides a comprehensive review of the obstacles and opportunities facing the application of NGS technologies for the diagnosis, surveillance, and study of SARS-CoV-2 and other infectious diseases.

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is a major subtype of lung cancer that accounts for almost 85% of lung cancer cases worldwide. Although recent advances in chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and immunotherapy have helped in the clinical management of these patients, the survival rate in advanced stages remains dismal. Furthermore, there is a critical lack of accurate prognostic and stratification markers for emerging immunotherapies.

We report a case of a 42-year-old gravida 3, para 4 woman from Puerto Rico with a history of cervical cancer who presented with dizziness, lethargy, and three days of bright red blood per rectum. Imaging evaluation showed a retroperitoneal lymph node mass with secondary metastasis to the duodenum. After she was stabilized with multiple blood transfusions and to mitigate her ongoing bleeding, she was transferred to a tertiary care hospital for possible embolization by interventional radiologists.

Cervical disc disease is a common pathology that may require surgical intervention. A common surgical intervention for cervical disc disease is anterior discectomy and fusion. A number of complications are associated with this technique, including hoarseness, dysphagia, pseudoarthrosis, adjacent segment disease, and hardware failure.

Background: Overdose deaths, addiction, and drug-related crime have increased in the United States over the past decade. Treatment improves outcomes, including reducing crime, but few individuals with addiction receive treatment. Here, we determine whether the Madison Addiction Recovery Initiative (MARI), a community policing program implemented by the City of Madison (Wisconsin) Police Department (MPD) that diverts adults who committed a non-violent, drug use-related crime from criminal prosecution to addiction treatment, reduces the risk of recidivism (i.

Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) is a potentially curative therapy for hematological malignancies. This beneficial effect is derived mainly from graft-versus-leukemia (GVL) effects mediated by alloreactive T cells. However, these alloreactive T cells can also induce graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), a life-threatening complication after allo-HSCT.

We describe the case of a newborn who presented with multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) and hyperferritinemia, who eventually met criteria for hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) due to disseminated herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1). While the cytokine storm abated after administration of multiple immune modulatory therapies including dexamethasone, etoposide, intravenous immune globulin, anakinra, as well as the interferon gamma antagonist emapalumab, multiple organ dysfunction syndrome progressed. Care was withdrawn after 5 days.

Tolerance to the pain-relieving effects of cannabinoids limits the therapeutic potential of these drugs in patients with chronic pain. Recent preclinical research with rodents and clinical studies in humans has suggested important differences between males and females in the development of tolerance to cannabinoids. Our previous work found that male mice expressing a desensitization resistant form (S426A/S430A) of the type 1 cannabinoid receptor (CBR) show delayed tolerance and increased sensitivity to the antinociceptive effects of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (∆-THC).

Introduction: Vulvodynia is a difficult condition to treat due to both the uncertain etiology of the disorder and poorly available therapies. This difficulty leads to a disproportionately high prevalence and cost of treatment for this condition. Candida vulvovaginitis is a frequent co-present diagnosis in vulvodynia patients.

Introduction: Smoking is the leading cause of preventable disease. Although smoking results in an acute effect of relaxation and positive mood through dopamine release, smoking is thought to increase stress symptoms such as heart rate and blood pressure from nicotine-induced effects on the HPA axis and increased cortisol. Despite the importance in understanding the mechanisms in smoking maintenance, little is known about the overall protein and physiological response to smoking.
