The identification, management, and prevention of concussion across all competitive sports and athletic populations has been a notable topic of research over the last decade. Soccer is no exception, with over a billion participants worldwide. In soccer, 3 distinct subsets of head injuries are often the contributors to concussion: head-to-equipment, head-to-surface, and head-to-player collisions.

Dwyer (lateral calcaneal closing wedge) osteotomy is commonly used in surgical correction of heel varus deformity. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of wedge size and angle of osteotomy on deformity correction using preoperative imaging analysis with three-dimensional (3D) printed modeling. Apathy in Frontotemporal Degeneration: Neuroanatomical Evidence of Impaired Goal-directed Behavior.

Front Hum Neurosci

November 2015

Department of Neurology, Frontotemporal Degeneration Center, Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania Philadelphia, PA, USA.

Background: Apathy, the major manifestation of impaired goal-directed behavior (GDB), is the most common neuropsychiatric syndrome associated with behavioral variant frontotemporal degeneration (bvFTD). The behavioral and biological mechanisms of apathy, however, are not well understood. We hypothesized that GDB has multiple components-including at least initiation, planning and motivation-and that GDB is supported by a network of multiple frontal brain regions.

Of identified genetic variants, HLA polymorphisms confer the greatest risk for developing autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis (HLA-DRB1*04). There are strong influences of HLA polymorphisms on cell type-specific gene expression in B cells and monocytes. Their influence on gene expression in CD4(+) T cells is not known.

South Med J

June 2014

From the Department of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases and Epidemiology, Penn State Hershey Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, Penn State College of Medicine, Hershey, Pennsylvania, the Department of Medicine, Section of Pulmonary Diseases, Critical Care, and Environmental Medicine, Tulane University Health Sciences Center, New Orleans, Louisiana, the Department of Public Health Sciences, Penn State College of Medicine, Hershey, and the Department of Internal Medicine, Chicago Medical School at Rosalind Franklin University, Chicago, Illinois.

Objectives: Earlier studies reported a low incidence of vancomycin-associated nephrotoxicity (VAN); however, recent studies have reported higher incidences exceeding 30%. Predictors of nephrotoxicity are not well defined. In this study we aimed to better estimate the incidence and evaluate predictors of VAN in a cohort of patients predominated by long treatment courses.

Purpose: Ileal pouch-anal anastomosis continues to be confounded by Crohn's disease-like complications after surgery. Such patients experience significant morbidity and often require either pouch excision or diversion.
