The identification, management, and prevention of concussion across all competitive sports and athletic populations has been a notable topic of research over the last decade. Soccer is no exception, with over a billion participants worldwide. In soccer, 3 distinct subsets of head injuries are often the contributors to concussion: head-to-equipment, head-to-surface, and head-to-player collisions.

Foreign bodies of body orifices: A pictorial review.

Introduction: Ingestion, inhalation, and insertion of foreign bodies (FB) are commonly encountered problems in the emergency departments (ED). Radiologists pay a key role in their diagnosis and management. Selecting an appropriate imaging modality is important depending on the route of entry and reported type of FB.

Effects of variations in Dwyer calcaneal osteotomy determined by three-dimensional printed patient-specific modeling.

Dwyer (lateral calcaneal closing wedge) osteotomy is commonly used in surgical correction of heel varus deformity. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of wedge size and angle of osteotomy on deformity correction using preoperative imaging analysis with three-dimensional (3D) printed modeling. Seven patients diagnosed with pes cavovarus deformity who underwent Dwyer calcaneal osteotomy were identified retrospectively.

Hospital Variation in Intensive Care Resource Utilization and Mortality in Newly Diagnosed Pediatric Leukemia.

Objectives: To evaluate hospital-level variability in resource utilization and mortality in children with new leukemia who require ICU support, and identify factors associated with variation.

Design: Retrospective cohort study.

Setting: Children's hospitals contributing to the Pediatric Health Information Systems administrative database from 1999 to 2011.

Apathy in Frontotemporal Degeneration: Neuroanatomical Evidence of Impaired Goal-directed Behavior.

Background: Apathy, the major manifestation of impaired goal-directed behavior (GDB), is the most common neuropsychiatric syndrome associated with behavioral variant frontotemporal degeneration (bvFTD). The behavioral and biological mechanisms of apathy, however, are not well understood. We hypothesized that GDB has multiple components-including at least initiation, planning and motivation-and that GDB is supported by a network of multiple frontal brain regions.

Cutting Edge: Chronic NF-κB Activation in CD4+ T Cells in Rheumatoid Arthritis Is Genetically Determined by HLA Risk Alleles.

Of identified genetic variants, HLA polymorphisms confer the greatest risk for developing autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis (HLA-DRB1*04). There are strong influences of HLA polymorphisms on cell type-specific gene expression in B cells and monocytes. Their influence on gene expression in CD4(+) T cells is not known.

Incidence and predictors of vancomycin-associated nephrotoxicity.

Objectives: Earlier studies reported a low incidence of vancomycin-associated nephrotoxicity (VAN); however, recent studies have reported higher incidences exceeding 30%. Predictors of nephrotoxicity are not well defined. In this study we aimed to better estimate the incidence and evaluate predictors of VAN in a cohort of patients predominated by long treatment courses.

Collaborating to increase access to clinical and educational resources for surgery: a case study.

A case study is described in which collaborations between a Department of Surgery, a Department of Information Technology, and an academic health sciences library resulted in the development of an electronic surgical library available at the bedside, the deployment of tablet devices for surgery residents, and implementation of a tablet-friendly user interface for the institution's electronic medical record.

Outcome of pediatric acute myeloid leukemia patients receiving intensive care in the United States.

Objective: Children with acute myeloid leukemia are at risk for sepsis and organ failure. Outcomes associated with intensive care support have not been studied in a large pediatric acute myeloid leukemia population. Our objective was to determine hospital mortality of pediatric acute myeloid leukemia patients requiring intensive care.

Orbital involvement in extranodal natural killer T cell lymphoma: an atypical case presentation and review of the literature.

Purpose: To report a rare case of extranodal NK/T cell lymphoma (NKTL) and to compare its features with those cases previously reported.

Design: Case report, observational and literature review.

Methods: Complete ophthalmologic examinations followed by excisional biopsy, histopathologic examination and therapy with radiation and chemotherapy.

A pediatric food allergy support group can improve parent and physician communication: results of a parent survey.

Rationale. We sought to evaluate the impact of having an allergist at a food allergy support group (FASG) on the relationship between parents and their child's allergist. Methods.

Infliximab and/or azathioprine in the treatment of Crohn's disease-like complications after IPAA.

Purpose: Ileal pouch-anal anastomosis continues to be confounded by Crohn's disease-like complications after surgery. Such patients experience significant morbidity and often require either pouch excision or diversion. This study evaluated the effectiveness in our hands of infliximab and/or azathioprine/6-mercaptopurine in treating this patient population.
